Vegetarian and dietary options can also be arranged upon request, ensuring that all participants are well-fed and satisfied throughout the journey.

DIFFICULTY:

The Waqrapukara tour is classified as a medium-difficulty hike. It requires a moderate level of fitness and some hiking experience. The path includes steep climbs and descents, uneven terrain, and high-altitude conditions. However, the challenging elements of the trek are balanced by the breathtaking scenery and rich cultural heritage encountered along the way. Please note, it’s recommended that participants acclimatize in Cusco for at least 2 days prior to the trek to adjust to the high-altitude conditions.

PREPARATION:

For the Waqrapukara trek, preparation is key to ensure an enjoyable and safe experience. Pack light but ensure you have essential items such as a sturdy pair of hiking boots for the uneven terrain, a water bottle to stay hydrated, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen) due to the high altitude, and warm clothing as temperatures can drop significantly in the evening. Keep a small first-aid kit handy for minor injuries or ailments. Remember to bring your camera to capture the stunning vistas and remarkable Incan ruins. Most importantly, prepare physically by maintaining a good level of fitness before the trek and mentally by understanding the challenges of the hike. Following these tips will contribute to a successful and memorable adventure.

ABOUT ALTITUDE:

High altitude can pose a significant challenge for trekkers. As you ascend, the air becomes thinner and your body must work harder to obtain the oxygen it needs. This can lead to altitude sickness, characterized by symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. Severe cases can progress to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both of which are potentially life threatening. To avoid altitude sickness, it’s essential to ascend slowly, allowing your body time to acclimatize. If symptoms persist, descending to a lower altitude is the best course of action. Always consult with your doctor before embarking on any high-altitude trek to discuss potential risks and preventative measures.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to undertake the Waqrapukara trek is during the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is relatively stable, with clear skies and lower chances of rainfall, making the trekking conditions more favorable. The daytime temperatures are mild, while nights can be chilly due to the high altitude. The clear weather also presents trekkers with unspoiled views of the surrounding landscapes and ruins. Note that this period can also be the busiest due to its popularity amongst hikers. So, for those looking for solitude, the shoulder periods of April and October might be more suitable despite slightly less predictable weather. Remember, no matter when you choose to visit, preparing for varying weather conditions is crucial.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:

While we strive to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, unanticipated circumstances can arise. Therefore, obtaining comprehensive travel insurance is essential for your upcoming trip. A good travel insurance plan should cover medical emergencies, travel disruptions, lost or damaged luggage, and trip cancellations. Review your policy carefully to ensure it includes coverage for high altitude hiking and any other specific activities you plan to undertake during your trip. This small step in preparation can save you from unexpected costs and provide you peace of mind on your adventure.

TRAVEL GUIDE ABOUT WAQRAPUKARA TOUR

Embark on a journey to Waqrapukara, often referred to as the ‘other Machu Picchu’, a hidden gem nestled high in the Peruvian Andes. This mesmeric archeological site, lesser-known but equally fascinating, provides a blend of natural beauty and cultural history. The tour takes you across winding mountain trails, offering breathtaking views of deep canyons and the Apurimac River. As you traverse through this rugged landscape, be prepared to witness the remarkable architectural feats of the ancient Inca civilization.

LOCATION.

Waqrapukara, located in the district of Acos, in the province of Acomayo, in the region of Cusco, is approximately a four-hour drive from the city of Cusco. Nestled deep in the Southern Sierras, it sits at an altitude of about 4,300 meters (14,107 feet) above sea level. The journey to the site is as intriguing as the destination, taking you through remote Andean communities and unspoiled landscapes, untouched by modernity.

HISTORY:

The origins of Waqrapukara, meaning ‘horn-shaped fortress’ in Quechua, trace back to the pre-Inca period, with its actual construction attributed to the Qanchis, a civilization that flourished during the late Intermediate Period (1000-1400 AD). The Incas, recognizing its strategic location, later annexed and expanded the site. Despite its historical significance, Waqrapukara remained relatively unknown until recent years due to its remote and inaccessible location. Today, it stands as a testament to the architectural ingenuity of the ancient civilizations of Peru, their deep understanding of the geography, and their harmonious relationship with the environment.

GETTING THERE:

Getting to Waqrapukara may require a bit of planning, but it is part of the adventure. From Cusco, there are local buses leaving daily to the town of Acomayo. From Acomayo, you can board a colectivo (shared taxi) to the community of Huayki. Once there, a clearly marked trail leads to Waqrapukara, about a 2-hour hike. Please note that due to the high altitude, it’s advisable to acclimatize in Cusco for a couple of days before undertaking the journey. Guided tours from Cusco are also available, offering transportation, food, and historical insights into the site. Regardless of the chosen means of transport, always remember to respect the local communities and the natural environment.

WEATHER:

The weather at Waqrapukara can be quite variable due to its high altitude. Generally, the dry season from May to October offers the best conditions for hiking, with clear skies and temperate weather. From November to April, the area experiences the rainy season, and while the vistas can be breathtakingly verdant, the trails can be slippery and challenging. Travelers are advised to pack layers and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, with temperatures ranging from hot daytime highs to cold nights. Always remember to check weather forecasts before setting out, and adapt your plans if necessary.

WHEN TO GO:

When it comes to the best time of year to visit Waqrapukara, the period from May to October is generally considered optimal. This is the dry season in the region, characterized by clear skies and pleasant temperatures which are ideal for hiking. However, intrepid travelers who don’t mind the occasional downpour may also find the rainy season (November to April) to be a rewarding experience – as the landscape comes alive with lush vegetation. It is important, however, to be prepared for unpredictable weather changes and potentially difficult trail conditions during this time. Always remember to monitor local weather forecasts, and be ready to modify your plans accordingly.

BIODIVERSITY:

Waqrapukara’s biodiversity is another aspect that makes it a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. The region is home to a variety of flora and fauna, some of which are unique to the Peruvian Andes. Travelers may encounter species like the Andean condor, a symbol of the Andes Mountain range, or spot unique plant species such as the Puya Raimondii, also known as the Queen of the Andes. The site’s rich biodiversity not only adds to its visual appeal but also plays a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region. Always remember to observe wildlife from a safe distance and avoid disturbing natural habitats to ensure these natural treasures can be appreciated by future generations.

In addition to its natural beauty, Waqrapukara also holds cultural significance for the local communities. The site is considered a sacred place by indigenous Andean groups, who still perform rituals and ceremonies here. Visitors are advised to be respectful of these traditions and learn about the history and beliefs surrounding Waqrapukara from knowledgeable guides or community members. Additionally, supporting local businesses and sustainable tourism initiatives can help preserve the cultural heritage of the area and benefit the communities that call it home.

SAFETY:

Safety is of paramount importance when visiting Waqrapukara or any other outdoor site. Hikers should wear comfortable and sturdy footwear suitable for rough trails, carry sufficient water and high-energy snacks, and bring essential gear such as a map, compass, first-aid kit, flashlight, and multi-tool. Make sure to stay on marked trails to minimize impact on the environment and reduce the risk of getting lost. Avoid hiking alone, and always let someone know your planned route and expected return time. Remember, altitude sickness can be a risk when climbing in the Andes, so acclimate properly and know the symptoms so you can respond promptly if needed. Lastly, emergency services may not be readily available in remote areas, so travelers should be prepared to handle minor injuries and health issues on their own. Always prioritize safety to ensure your hike is a memorable experience for all the right reasons.

    Responsible travel...

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

    • Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.

    • Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites during our treks contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimize our environmental footprint by using biodegradable products.
