Informative meeting before the walk:
You will have an in-depth briefing with your guide 1 or 2 days before your hike. Your guide will meet you in your hotel or in our office in Cusco and you can take this opportunity to ask questions and make final preparations.
DAY 1: Travel by car from Cusco to “Huancacalle” Then hike 4Hrs. to “Pillaupata” camp:
Embark on an exciting 5-day Vilcabamba Trekking adventure from Cusco to “Huancacalle”! Begin by traveling by car and hiking for about 4 hours to reach the picturesque “Pillaupata” camp. Our experienced staff will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco or the sacred Valley, ensuring a smooth start to your journey. Departing from Cusco, we’ll travel in our private van, making stops along the way for photo opportunities, restroom breaks, and to take in the breathtaking views. Enjoy a delicious breakfast during the drive.
The route takes us through the charming town of Ollantaytambo (2800m), and then up to the “Abra Malaga” pass (4,660m), where we’ll be rewarded with stunning vistas before descending into the tropical zone. Passing by quaint villages, we’ll eventually reach the town of “Chaullay” (1,890m / 6,200ft). From here on, the road becomes a dirt trail, especially during the dry season.
Upon arrival in “Huancacalle” (3,100m), our skilled chef will prepare a delightful lunch while you take some time to rest and relax. In just 45 minutes, lunch will be ready, and then we’ll resume our trekking journey. After approximately an hour of walking, we’ll reach the impressive Inca settlement of “Vitcos”. Here, you’ll have the opportunity to join an informative tour to learn more about the history of the site and the Incas.
Continuing for another hour, we’ll arrive at the remarkable Inca site known as “Nusta Hispana”. Our knowledgeable guide will take you on an exploration, sharing captivating stories about the Incas and their remarkable achievements.
To conclude the day’s adventure, we’ll have a short walk to our camping site in the beautiful area of “Pillaupata” (3,630m / 11,909ft). This campsite is situated along a section of the original Inca trail, offering a unique and immersive experience. Our team will set up camp, allowing you to relax and unwind, while enjoying a delicious and nutritious hot meal. Get ready for a memorable trekking experience!

Most of the day will be spent traveling by bus to the starting point of the trek. The visit to the Inca sites of “Vitcos” – “Rosaspata” and “Nusta Hispana” will be the highlight of our long day. Kickstart your day with a steaming cup of tea delivered right to your tent by your knowledgeable guide. As you open the tent door, be greeted by breathtaking vistas that stretch ahead. Get your belongings ready for the horses and proceed to the dining-room tent for a satisfying breakfast. Following breakfast, you’ll be provided with a nutritious snack to keep you fueled throughout the day’s journey.
Begin your adventure with a gradual ascent, lasting approximately 5 hours, as you traverse through the awe-inspiring Andes. Immerse yourself in verdant vegetation and encounters with wildlife until you reach the remarkable “Hasuntina Pass” (4,500m). Pause here to rest, bask in the awe-inspiring sight of snow-capped peaks, and take in the pristine rivers that flow below. Indulge in a delectable lunch served near the Pass, where you can also replenish your water bottle.
After capturing picturesque memories through photographs, commence a 3-hour descent along the well-preserved Inca Trail. Marvel at the striking vistas of majestic mountains and anticipate encountering a myriad of fascinating wildlife. Arrive at our next campsite situated in the scenic community of Racahaca (3,570m / 11,712ft), where you’ll be able to soak in the wonders of nature in abundance throughout the day.

The Vilcabamba Trekking to Machu Picchu is a unique experience. This is one of the best “off the beaten track” routes in Cusco. Sometimes we will be the only ones to walk through these mountains and jungles.

Day 3: Trekking from Racachaca Village – over Mojon pass (4,500 m/14,763 ft.) until Mutuypatacamp:
Embarking on a trek from Racachaca Village, we will conquer the challenging Mojon pass (4,500 m/14,763 ft.) until reaching Mutuypata camp. Prepare yourself for an early start, as this will be the most demanding day.
Just like before, our knowledgeable guide will gently wake you up with a warm cup of tea or coffee. Afterward, ensure your duffle bag is properly packed for the horses, then gather in the welcoming dining-room tent for a delicious breakfast. Our trek resumes through the breathtaking Hatum Pampa (3,860 m / 12,664 ft), leading up to the first pass, Yanococha (4,420 m / 14,501 ft). Descend to Lake Yanococha before progressing to the second pass, Tullu Tacanca (4,500m / 14,760ft). The pinnacle awaits at Mojon Pass (4,500m / 14,763ft), providing an incredible vista of the majestic Machu Picchu and the Urubamba mountain range (weather permitting). Seize the opportunity to rest, capture stunning photographs of the magnificent snow-covered peaks of Pumasillo (6,012 m / 19,724 ft) and Sacsarayoc (6,026 m / 19,770 ft).
Departing from Mojon Pass, we will descend to Mutuypata camp (3,000m / 9,840ft), passing through the charming towns of S’aqra Cocha and Laccococha. Please be aware that the second half of this hike can be quite muddy, particularly from October to April. Hence, we strongly advise the use of leggings during these months.

Breakfast at our camp in the morning, lunch on the way after the third step, and dinner at our camp in the evening.
Accommodation:
Camping in Mutuypata at 3,200 m / 10,498 ft.
Other information:
The third day is the most difficult of this hike. We recommend that you rent a horse to the villagers on this day. This is the best way to help you cross these mountains while contributing directly to the local economy.

Day 4: Matuypata to Yantile and then car to Hydroelectric Station. Then hike / train to Aguas Calientes (6-7 hours hiking, 1 hour drive):
Begin your trek from Matuypata to Yantile and then hop onto a car that will take you to the Hydroelectric Station. From there, embark on a captivating hike/train journey lasting around 6-7 hours with scenic views and refreshing mountain air.
Today’s adventure commences with a delightful breakfast, energizing you for the 4-5 hour downhill trek towards the charming town of “Yanatile.” Traverse through coffee and fruit plantations, immersing yourself in the surroundings. Following this, take a car that will transport you to the train station at “Hidroelectrica” in approximately 3 hours.
Continue your journey on foot along the path parallel to the railroad to reach the town of Aguas Calientes. This 2-hour trek ensures a memorable experience surrounded by stunning landscapes.
If you wish to rest your weary legs, you have the option to board a train from the hydroelectric station to Aguas Calientes. However, please note that there is a cost of $25 for a 45-minute journey.
You will spend the night in a cozy hotel or hostel in Aguas Calientes. We highly recommend taking the opportunity to indulge in the city’s renowned hot springs. Don’t forget to pack your bathing suit for this rejuvenating experience!

In Aguas Calientes you can enjoy the hot springs of the city (entry ten soles), it is a real pleasure once the walk is finished.

A typical day on the Vilcabamba Trekking to Machu Picchu
Your day starts with a gentle wake-up call, as a steaming cup of tea is delivered to your tent around 6:00 am. A refreshing bowl of warm water is provided for your morning ablutions. Before breakfast, you carefully pack your gear into your duffle bag, which will be securely transported by our pack-animals until you reach the next camp in the afternoon.
Once nourished by a wholesome breakfast around 7:00 am, we embark on our expedition. Depending on the duration and terrain, we typically trek for around 4-5 hours before breaking for a leisurely lunch for approximately 1:30 hours.
Our experienced staff walks ahead, scouting for a picturesque spot to pause and rest. The afternoon trek is usually shorter, bringing us to our campsite by around 4:30 pm. As our kitchen is set up, a refreshing afternoon tea awaits. Until dinner, you can take time to relax or explore the enchanting surroundings.
Dinner, a delightful affair, is served between 6-7 pm. Don’t forget to bring your headlamp and water bottles to the dining tent, where they can be filled with boiling water. Evenings during the trek are filled with cherished memories, whether it is engaging in lively conversations, playing cards, interacting with our incredible crew, or joining in with the locals for singing and dancing.
