Getting Cusco

Arrival in Cusco

To begin our 5-day Vilcabamba Trekking to Machu Picchu, it is necessary to arrive in Cusco. Please note that Cusco Airport currently serves domestic flights only. Therefore, international travelers arriving by air must disembark in Lima, the capital of Peru, and go through customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is on the same day and with the same airline, you will need to collect your luggage in Lima and re-check it.

The most convenient way to reach Cusco is by plane, with several airline options available. LAN, although relatively expensive, offers the most flight choices. However, it is important to consider that landing in Cusco can be challenging due to its high altitude, which may cause flight delays or cancellations affected by weather conditions.

Alternatively, bus travel is also available. While the journey can be lengthy, especially from Lima, buses in Peru are well-maintained and provide a comfortable experience. This option is highly recommended if you are traveling from a city closer to Cusco, such as Puno or Arequipa. Buses departing from Lima typically take around 22 hours to reach Cusco.

Altitude concerns.

About Altitude:

Altitude is an important factor to consider in Peru, as the country has an average elevation of 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) above sea level. Cusco, located at around 3,400 meters (11,154 feet), is one of the highest cities in the world. This means that travelers visiting Cusco will be exposed to a significantly lower concentration of oxygen, which can lead to altitude sickness. Symptoms of altitude sickness can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, loss of appetite and difficulty sleeping.

For this reason, we advise visitors to Cusco to take time to acclimate before undertaking any physical activity. Taking it easy upon arrival is key – it’s best to avoid alcohol and caffeine, as well as taking short walks or just resting. We also recommend drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and eating light meals until you feel more comfortable. As your body adjusts to the higher altitude, these symptoms should start to fade away after a few days.

However, if the symptoms worsen or don’t improve, it’s important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. In extreme cases, altitude sickness can be life threatening, and so seeking medical advice should not be taken lightly.

Altitude sickness can be a minor nuisance for some people, while for others it can cause serious problems. Taking the time to acclimate properly and listening to your body are key steps to avoiding it, so have a plan of action before arrival and enjoy your travels in Peru!

About the waether.

The Temperature for trekking.

Given the high altitude of the 5-day Vilcabamba Trekking to Machu Picchu, it is important to be prepared for cold and unpredictable weather. During the nights, temperatures can range from an average low of 20F/-7C to a high of 60-75F/15-24C if the sun is out. However, if it’s cloudy or rainy during the day, it will be colder. Furthermore, the weather can change quickly or become very windy at the top of the passes. To ensure a safe and comfortable trekking experience, it is recommended to bring plenty of layers; this way you can adjust to whatever conditions you may encounter. Additionally, having sun protection and waterproof items such as jackets and pants are important to have. Lastly, it’s important to be aware of the weather forecast before embarking on the trek and take any necessary precautions as needed. All in all, if you come prepared for the varying temperatures and conditions, then you’re sure to have a great time exploring this mountain region!

Being extremely fit does not guarantee any immunity against altitude sickness. The entire hike is about 42 kilometers, and this Tour runs for 5 days and 4 nights. Trekking basically is 3 days, because one day we’ll travel from Cusco to Vilcabamba by car and one day we’ll explore the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu. In general, this trekking is considered to be a bit more difficult than the Inca Trail. Other trails, like Choquequirao, are considered a bit more difficult than Vilcamaba trek.

Weather conditions during the rainy season makes the trek a risky decision. Therefore, we cannot guarantee the availability for this Trekking from mid-November to March. Can I do the walk alone?

Yes, it is possible for an individual traveler or a small group to do the trek on their own, without guides or porters. Our guides know the route very well.

What kind of weather is expected?

The weather is highly varied on the Vilcabamba Trek to Machu Picchu, due to the fact that it weaves its way through very different terrain at different altitudes. The only place where weather is a serious concern is the Mojon Pass and nearby areas. Temperatures here, and in the nearby “Rajachaca” camp, can drop below zero. The other campgrounds are much warmer, due to their proximity to the cloud forest.

Can I change my start date for the trek?

Once we have purchased your tickets, with your security deposit, you can only change your start date if you pay an additional amount. This amount is usually around $ 200 USD. The reason for this is that the tickets we buy are non-refundable and non-transferable, so we cannot simply change the date of your tour.

Is altitude sickness a problem? What should I do to avoid altitude sickness?

To avoid altitude sickness, give yourself time in Cuzco to acclimate to the change in altitude. A minimum of two days is recommended!
