Essential Information

Arrival in Cusco.

Our 10-day Trekking Choquequirao to Vilcabmaba begins in the city of Cusco so, you’ll need to arrive in Cusco. Cusco Airport is currently reserved for domestic flights, so all international travelers by air must disembark in Lima (The capital of Peru) and go through customs. Even if your flight to Cusco is made on the same day by the same airline, you must collect your luggage in Lima and then re-check it.

The best way to arrive in Cusco is by plane, and there are several options on airlines. LAN tends to be the most expensive, but has the most flight options. But flight delays or cancellations due to Cusco’s high altitude tends to be difficult to land, and any weather will stop air traffic.

Bus travel is always available, and although the journey can be long, especially from Lima, buses in Peru are very well maintained and comfortable. This option is highly recommended if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco, such as Puno or Arequipa. Buses from Lima will take around 22 hours to arrive in Cusco.

Store your Luggage while on the Trek.

Any additional luggage you have with you can be safely left in Cusco in your hotel, while you do your Trekking Choquequirao to Vilcabmaba; you can store your luggage on the morning of your trek and return it to you when you return to Cusco. Make sure your bags have tags so they’re easy to find it.

A typical day on  Trekking Choquequirao to Vilcabmaba.

You will be wakeup with a cup of tea brought to your tent around 6:00am, followed by a small bowl of warm water for washing. Before breakfast you pack your gear into your duffle bag which is then taken by the pack‑animals and will not be available to you until you reach the next camp that afternoon. After a healthful breakfast we are usually at around 7:00 am; depending upon the duration and nature of the day’s walk. We will walk for around 4-5 hours and then generally break for lunch for about 1:30 hours.

Some of our staff will walk ahead and select a suitable place to stop. The afternoon walk is generally a little shorter and camp is usually reached by around 4:30 pm. Once we have reached camp and the kitchen is set up, afternoon tea will be prepared. From then until dinner there is time to rest or explore the surrounding area.

Dinner is usually served between 6‑7 pm. Remember to bring your headlamp and your water bottles to the dining tent so they can be filled with boiling water. Trekking evenings afford some of the best memories of your trek, whether it is talking, playing cards, chatting with the crew or joining in some singing and dancing with the local people. Much of the enjoyment of an expedition is in the journey itself.

What you carry during the Trekking?

In your daypack you will need to carry extra warm clothing (depending on the altitude, location and weather), a rain jacket, water bottle, camera gear, valuables and personal items such as sunscreen, lip‑eze etc. mules carry all group gear and your Camping equipment.

Acute Mountain Sickness:

When we ascend above 2500 meters our bodies have to acclimatize to the decreasing amount of the oxygen available. To allow our bodies to adjust we have structured our trek so that you ascend slowly, allowing acclimatization to occur. However, during the acclimatization process, you may experience some of the following symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Tiredness
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Loss of appetite/nausea
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Palpitation
  • Swelling of the hands and face.

Individuals acclimatize at different rates. Your best strategy is to take your time and drink plenty of water. These symptoms may not indicate the onset of A.M.S. and if you experience them it does not necessarily mean that you should not continue. All our group leaders have extensive first aid training and we urge you to communicate with the group leader at all times should you believe you have any symptoms in order that we can effectively monitor your symptoms. The only cure for Acute Mountain Sickness is to descend.

Please note that your group leader has ultimate responsibility and may ask you to descend if symptoms persist.

First aid.

Every SUNRISE PERU TREK guide has received first aid training from a doctor. We organize compulsory training every year in February, and all of our guides attend, when they guide you, they will have with them a first aid kit for basic medical situations (traveler’s diarrhea, cuts, scratches, etc.) and oxygen. They will take good care of you.

If something unexpected happens and you feel like you can’t complete the hike anymore, you will find the safest and fastest way to get off the trail and enter a clinic. They will never leave you alone; A team member will accompany you every step of the way until you are safe with a doctor. Whenever you want, we will make sure that you always have the opportunity to visit Machu Picchu and reconnect with your group and so you can end your train journey in comfort.

Travel insurance:

When it comes to planning your next trip in Peru, purchasing a comprehensive travel insurance is a must. It will cover additional expenses that arise due to health issues, injuries and accidents, as well as air ambulance and helicopter rescue costs. Your policy should cover all activities you plan to do while in Peru, including death, lost/stolen luggage, liability, cancellations and medical treatment (including hospital fees, medication costs, and doctor visits). Having a comprehensive travel insurance will help you stay safe and secure during your entire trip in Peru. So make sure to get a policy that covers your needs before you leave for the trip of a lifetime.
