In the afternoon, there will be a city tour starting at 01:30 p.m. We will pick you up from the hotel and go on a guided tour, visiting six different places (entrance to archaeological centers and museums included).
Places for visiting today:
- The Koricancha Palace and Convent of Santo Domingo: Religious center known as “The Temple of the Sun” where you will admire the impressive engineering used in its construction.
- The Cathedral: Colonial religious monument of extraordinary artistic value.
- Sacsayhuaman: Built at 3 Km from the city of Cusco, this is an impressive stone fortress with excellent architecture, famous for its huge carved stones, some of which are 9 meters (30 feet) high and weigh 350 tons. It is also the site where the Inty Raymi or Fiesta del Sol is held every June.
- Qenqo: A ceremonial and ritual center, amphitheatre where sacrifices were made.
- Puca-Pucara: An old tambo (resting place), monitoring place throughout the Inka Empire routes.
- Tambomachay: Located 7 Km from the city of Cusco, this is a ceremonial center of cult to the water, known traditionally as the place where water rests.
Recommendations:
After the tour, take a walk through the Plaza and its surroundings where you can appreciate the work of Cusco artisans in craft shops. You can also taste the famous Peruvian cuisine in the nearby restaurants or simply take a break in one of the benches of the main square. Remember to take the classic photo to remember in a warm atmosphere, despite the cold of Cusco nights. For the tour, take a small backpack where you’ll carry your jacket, bottle of water, camera, and sunblock. Wear comfortable shoes, as you’ll walk through Inca sites with many steps.
Day 2: Sacred Valley of the Incas:
Pick-up from the hotel at 07:30 a.m. and head to the fertile valley for a full-day tour. The valley, known for its excellent climate and fertile lands, is embraced between the towns of Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Its inhabitants, native of the Quechua ethnic group, preserve many customs, traditions, and ancestral rites. Witness the high technological development achieved by the Incas in agriculture through the “andenería” systems (platform terraces), which are still in use today. These systems showcase sophisticated designs of hydraulic engineering for irrigation purposes. The tour ends at the town of Ollantaytambo. In the afternoon, take a two-hour train ride to the town of “Aguas Calientes/Hot Waters” and check into the hotel.
Recommendations:
You have to check out of the hotel in Cusco because you’ll be staying in a different hotel in the town of Aguas Calientes; so take some items for one more day. We suggest that you wear appropriate shoes as you will climb many steps. Take a small backpack with your camera, hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a bottle of water. At Pisac, don’t forget to try the empanadas and bring some souvenirs from the crafts market. In Urubamba, you will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch where we invite you to try the corn from the Sacred Valley.

Day 4: Tour to Maras Moray
Day 4 of the 6-day Cusco Cultural Tour is dedicated to visiting Maras, Moray, and the Salt Mines. Departing at 8:00 a.m. and after enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we will embark on a private bus to explore these fascinating sites:
MARAS: A charming colonial town situated at an altitude of 3,300 masl in the province of Urubamba. Here, you can admire the snow-capped mountain range, including the magnificent peaks of “Chicón” (5,500 masl) and “Veronica” (5,750 masl). Marvel at the ancient stone doorways adorned with beautiful decorations.
MORAY: Located 7 km west of the town of Maras, Moray is a unique archaeological site in the region. It features enormous terraces arranged concentrically in a massive crater. These terraces served as an agricultural laboratory during the Inca period, where ancient Quechuas or Incas conducted experiments and made advancements.
SALINERAS or “SALT MINES:” Situated northwest of Maras, the Salt Mines consist of approximately 3,000 small wells with an average area of 4 m². These wells have been in operation since the Inca and Colonial times and are still being exploited by locals. Water containing salt naturally springs from the mountain, and every three days during the dry season, it is used to irrigate the wells. Over time, the water evaporates, leaving behind solidified salt. This salt production process serves as a crucial resource for the region.
Recommendations:
We suggest that you wear appropriate shoes as you will climb many steps. Take a small backpack with your camera; bring a hat, sunscreen, mosquito repellent, and a bottle of water. In Maras, taste the “Canchita,” a toasted corn with salt which is a very delicious snack.
Day 5: Tour to Tipon and Pikillacta
On Day 5 of our tour, we will explore the fascinating sites of Tipon, Pikillacta, Rumicolca, and Andahuaylillas. After breakfast, we’ll embark on a scenic journey in our private transport to the southern region of Cusco city. Let’s delve into the details of each destination:
- Tipon: This Inca agricultural center impresses with its well-preserved wide terraces and functioning water channels. A center for the worship of water, Tipon is known for its unique irrigation system featuring deep, vertical channels in the terrace walls. The water supply originates from the sacred mountain Pachatusan, and the flow continues to this day.
- Pikillacta: Also referred to as the “City of Fleas,” this extensive pre-Inca archaeological site belonged to the Wari culture. It is the only pre-Inca ruin in the Cusco region and offers insights into the ancient civilization’s history. Flourishing around 1000 AD, the Wari civilization may have eventually succumbed to the Incas.
- Rumicolca: A significant stone quarry utilized during the Inca era, Rumicolca served as a source for construction materials for the temples and palaces in Cusco.
- Andahuaylillas: Our last stop is the enchanting village of Andahuaylillas, known for its colonial church. Often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas,” this church captivates visitors with its stunning painted ceiling and collection of artistic treasures.
Join us on this adventure as we uncover the hidden gems of these remarkable locations.

Packing List
What to bring for 6-Day Cusco Cultural Tour?
To ensure you have everything you need, here’s a detailed list to assist you when packing for your 5-day Machu Picchu Classic Tour:
Suggested items to pack:
- A backpack: This is an essential item for your journey. When purchasing a backpack, make sure it has strong straps, as this will help to spread the weight evenly.
- Passport: You will need to show your passport to access to Machu Picchu.
- Reusable water bottle: The recommended amount to consume is one or two litres per day.
- Hiking boots: At first glance, a sturdy pair of hiking boots might seem like a large investment, but you won’t regret the purchase once you’re on the trail, as hiking boots are designed for comfort. If you are purchasing a new pair, make sure your boots are well-worn before you hit the trail, as blisters will make or break your experience.
- Sneakers: There is no better feeling than kicking your hiking boots off at the end of the day and changing into a light pair of sneakers.
- Yoga pants or sweatpants: Once you finish trekking each day, make sure you have a pair of warm, comfortable pants that you can relax in at night.
- Socks and underwear: Always throw in a few extras.
- Waterproof jacket: Light to heavy rainfall is common on the trails to Machu Picchu, so a waterproof jacket will be a lifesaver if you do happen to get stuck in a downpour.
- Waterproof pants: Opt for a light pair that can be unzipped to reveal a shorter length that can be worn around the base of the mountain where it will be warmer.
- Insulated jacket: Make sure you select a jacket that matches the season that you will be hiking in. If you are hiking in winter, you may need a warmer jacket, whereas in summer this might be completely different.
- A light fleece jacket: You won’t always need to wear a large waterproof jacket, so for those warmer moments during your trek, a light fleece jacket will keep you warm without feeling as if you are being weighed down by bulky clothing.
- Long sleeve tops in a light, moisture-wicking fabric: Keep in mind that no matter how cool the temperature is, your body will still sweat as you walk. To stay fresh, consider packing tops with moisture-wicking fabric to keep cool.
- Hat or cap: Protect your face from the sun during both winter and summer.
- A beanie: Regardless of the season, this is something you will need most nights.
- Quick-dry towel: Consider a thin, light towel that dries quickly and does not take up much of your pack.
- Toiletries: When packing toiletries, aim to pack as little as possible in order to keep the weight of your pack down and only pack the necessities.
- Toilet paper: Just in case.
- Packing cubes: A secret travel hack used by those in the know, once you start using packing cubes, you’ll wonder how you ever survived without them.
- Energy snacks and supplements: Who doesn’t love snacks? There will be food included on your hiking and trekking tour, but it never hurts to munch on a few hidden snacks along the trail. Plus, they keep your energy up during the day.
- Headlamp or a torch: Don’t forget to pack spare batteries.
- Insect repellant: For your own personal comfort, there are a number of repellants you can carry with you.
- Small first aid kit: Your guide or team of porters and chefs will be carrying a full first-aid kit, but it doesn’t hurt to include the odd bandage or plaster.
- Hand sanitizer or wet wipes: A lifesaver for any hiker and trekker. Just make sure you dispose of these carefully.
- Camera: You don’t need to be a skilled photographer, but if you want to capture a few memories of a lifetime then don’t forget to pack a camera. You might even want to pack a disposable camera just for fun. If you are carrying top-notch camera gear, make sure it is protected with waterproof casing where possible to reduce the chance of any damage during your trek.
- Sunglasses: Make sure your sunglasses have a UV filter to protect your eyes.
By carefully considering and packing these items, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable adventure to one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations, Machu Picchu.
Recommended Travel Suitcases
For this trip, it’s essential to travel light and smart. A 10-kilo suitcase paired with a 30-liter backpack strikes the perfect balance for mobility and convenience. Opt for a durable, lightweight suitcase with smooth-rolling wheels and a comfortable handle. This allows for easy maneuverability, whether you’re navigating busy airports or rugged terrain. Look for a suitcase with multiple compartments to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible.
A 30-liter backpack adds versatility to your journey, providing enough space to carry daily essentials, snacks, extra layers of clothing, and any other necessities you may need on the trail. Choose a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a sturdy back panel for optimum comfort during long hikes. Additional features like a hydration bladder compartment, rain cover, and external mesh pockets can further enhance your trekking experience. By selecting the right luggage, you ensure an enjoyable, hassle-free adventure to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.
For the Suitcase:
When choosing a suitcase for your Machu Picchu adventure, prioritize durability and functionality. Your suitcase should be able to withstand the varied conditions of travel, from bustling airports to remote trails. A hard-shell suitcase offers robust protection for your belongings, ensuring that fragile items remain intact throughout the journey. Look for a suitcase with a TSA-approved lock for added security while traveling internationally.
In terms of organization, a suitcase with built-in dividers and compartments can be invaluable. These features allow you to segregate your clothing, electronics, and toiletries, making it easier to find what you need without having to unpack everything. Compression straps inside the suitcase help to optimize space and keep items securely in place, reducing the risk of wrinkles and spillage.
For the backpack:
For the backpack, it’s essential to choose one that delivers both practicality and comfort. Opt for a backpack with a sturdy frame and padded straps to distribute weight evenly across your shoulders and back. This will be crucial during long hikes and exploration sessions around Machu Picchu. Look for waterproof or water-resistant materials to protect your belongings from sudden rain showers and humid conditions.
A backpack with multiple compartments can keep you organized and allow for quick access to essential items such as water bottles, snacks, and cameras. Side pockets are particularly useful for storing water bottles, ensuring you stay hydrated throughout your journey. Additionally, internal and external zippered pockets provide secure storage for valuables like your phone, wallet, and travel documents.

Essential Information for 6-Day Cusco Cultural Tour
Arriving in Cusco
Arriving in Cusco for the 6-Day Cusco Cultural Tour can be done through the Cusco airport, but please note that it currently only serves domestic flights. If you are coming from an international destination, you will need to disembark in Lima and clear Customs before continuing to Cusco. It’s important to remember that even if you have a connecting flight to Cusco on the same day and with the same airline, you will still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and then check them in again.
For transportation to Cusco, air travel is recommended as the best option. There are several airlines to choose from, with LAN being one of the popular but more expensive choices. It’s worth noting that flight delays or cancellations can occur due to the high-altitude weather conditions in Cusco. In such cases, air traffic may be temporarily halted. Alternatively, bus travel is available and can be a good option, especially if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco like Puno. Buses in Peru are well maintained and comfortable, although the journey from Lima can be quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.
Once in Cusco, it is essential to take some time to acclimate to the altitude before beginning your tour. Cusco’s elevation is about 3,400 meters (11,155 feet) above sea level, which can cause altitude sickness for some travelers. To mitigate this, it is advisable to spend your first day or two in Cusco taking it easy, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activities. Some visitors find that drinking coca tea, a traditional herbal remedy, can help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Preparing your body for the change in altitude can make your visit to Machu Picchu and the surrounding sites a much more enjoyable experience.
Transfers In/Out
When you reach Cusco, our team will be waiting for you at the airport. Look for our representative with a whiteboard displaying the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrival terminal. Once you meet them, they will transfer you to your reserved hotel. For the return transfer, we will pick you up from your hotel 2 hours before the time specified in your airline tickets. The drive from your hotel to the airport typically takes around 20-30 minutes but may vary due to traffic conditions. Once at the airport, you will need to check your flights and settle the airport taxes.
Leave your Suitcase
While on the Cusco Cultural Tour, you’ll leave your suitcase at the hotel. This allows you to travel lightly and with ease. Make sure to carry your small backpack packed with essentials for the day tour. Items you might consider bringing include water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a camera, and any personal medications. By carrying only the necessities, you can fully enjoy the stunning landscapes and historical sites without the burden of heavy luggage. This preparation ensures you are comfortable and ready for a memorable experience on your tour. So, leave your suitcase at the hotel and get ready for a fantastic adventure!
Bring Cash
In Cusco and Machu Picchu, cash is king. While most major businesses accept credit cards, it’s always good to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases or unexpected expenses. We recommend bringing some local currency (Peruvian soles) as well as US dollars in small denominations. Keep in mind that there are ATMs available in major cities, but they may not be easily accessible in more remote areas. It’s always better to be prepared with some cash just in case. Don’t worry about exchanging currency beforehand as there are currency exchange services available at the airport and major cities. So, bring some cash with you to fully enjoy your trip without any interruptions.
Food
Food is not included in the Cusco Cultural Tour, except for breakfast at the hotels. Breakfasts typically feature a variety of local and international dishes, offering you a nutritious start to your day with fruits, pastries, eggs, and more. For lunches and dinners, you will have the opportunity to explore local cuisine at your leisure. Cusco boasts a vibrant food scene with numerous restaurants and food stalls where you can indulge in regional specialties such as ceviche, lomo saltado, and alpaca dishes. Sampling local cuisine is a quintessential part of the travel experience, allowing you to immerse yourself more deeply into the culture of the region. So, while you are out and about, make sure to enjoy the gastronomic delights that Cusco and Machu Picchu have to offer.
The Transport
The transport for your 6-Day Cusco Cultural Tour is designed to be both comfortable and convenient. You will travel by a well-appointed bus and a scenic train that offers spectacular views of the landscapes. The buses are air-conditioned and provide ample seating, ensuring you can sit back and relax while taking in the picturesque surroundings. The train ride is equally enjoyable, featuring panoramic windows that give you an immersive experience of the beautiful Peruvian countryside.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
As you explore the historic sites and natural wonders, it’s essential to wear comfortable shoes. The daily tours often involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing steps, and navigating cobblestone streets, so a sturdy pair of shoes is a must. Choose footwear that offers good support and cushioning to keep your feet comfortable throughout the day. This small preparation ensures you can fully enjoy your adventures without any discomfort, allowing you to focus on the breathtaking views and rich history that await you.

This provides a unique opportunity for cross-cultural interactions and the sharing of different perspectives. Despite this diversity, the guided tours are conducted primarily in one language to ensure everyone can follow along easily. Typically, English is used as the common language, allowing seamless communication and understanding among the group members. This approach not only simplifies the tour experience but also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie as you collectively delve into the rich history and breathtaking beauty of Machu Picchu.
About the Altitude
Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially Cusco. The air at higher altitudes has less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. To help your body adjust, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any Andes trek. Cusco is a vibrant city with plenty to explore, so you won’t run out of things to do while acclimating. Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising are some common effects. If you experience any severe symptoms, please get in touch with our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor. Our guides are also trained to recognize and provide assistance for altitude sickness. Staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and taking it slow can greatly reduce the likelihood of experiencing any significant symptoms.
About Weather
The weather in Cusco for the 6-Day Cusco Cultural Tour is notoriously unpredictable, presenting a unique challenge for even seasoned travelers. The dry season typically spans from April to October, offering clearer skies and less rainfall. However, it’s not uncommon to experience unexpected showers even in June or bright, sunny days in December. Being prepared for any weather conditions is crucial. Regardless of the month, ensure you carry comprehensive rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Many trekkers neglect the necessity of gloves, but they can make a significant difference in keeping your hands warm and dry during unexpected rain or snow. Also, pack layers of clothing that you can add or remove depending on the temperature changes throughout the day.
Travel Insurance
Taking a step towards protecting your travel investment with travel insurance is not just a smart choice but an essential one. Travel insurance offers you coverage for unforeseen circumstances that can occur before or during your trip. Whether it’s trip cancellation, interruption, medical emergencies, or baggage loss, having travel insurance can save you from significant financial loss. Moreover, securing travel insurance is a straightforward process that can be done from the comfort of your home. So, make travel insurance a non-negotiable part of your travel checklist, and ensure peace of mind while exploring the corners of the globe. Travel insurance is a vital tool for any traveler.
