The altitude can also be a challenge for some, so it’s important to allow time for acclimatization. However, with adequate preparation and the guidance of our experienced guides, most hikers find the challenge of the trek adds to the sense of accomplishment they feel upon completion.

PREPARATION:

Preparation for the 7 Lakes Trek should be a comprehensive process that includes both physical conditioning and gear selection. In terms of physical fitness, incorporating regular cardio workouts into your routine, such as jogging, cycling, or swimming, can help build your stamina for the trek. Strength training, particularly focusing on your legs and core, will also prove beneficial on the steeper portions of the journey. Apart from fitness, preparing your trekking gear is crucial. Essentials include a sturdy pair of hiking boots, weather-appropriate clothing in layers, a well-fitted backpack, and navigation tools like maps and compass. Hydration packs and high-energy snacks are a must during the trek. Lastly, don’t forget to pack first-aid supplies, and make sure you’re up-to-date with any necessary vaccinations or medications. ALTITUDE PROBLEMS:

High altitude can pose a significant challenge for trekkers. As you ascend, the air becomes thinner and your body must work harder to obtain the oxygen it needs. This can lead to altitude sickness, characterized by symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. Severe cases can progress to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both of which are potentially life threatening. To avoid altitude sickness, it’s essential to ascend slowly, allowing your body time to acclimatize. If symptoms persist, descending to a lower altitude is the best course of action. Always consult with your doctor before embarking on any high-altitude trek to discuss potential risks and preventative measures.

During this period, the weather is generally clear and the temperatures are mild, although it can be chilly at higher elevities. However, it’s important to be prepared for changeable weather at any time, as mountain conditions can be unpredictable. Always check the local weather forecast and consult with our guides before starting your journey.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:

While we strive to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience, unanticipated circumstances can arise. Therefore, obtaining comprehensive travel insurance is essential for your upcoming trip. The lakes themselves have been revered for centuries as sacred bodies of water, believed to possess healing properties. WEATHER:

For trekking the 7 Lakes, weather is a crucial factor to consider. The best time to embark on this journey is during the dry season, typically from May to September, when the skies are clear and the trails are less muddy. However, remember that this is high-altitude trekking, so temperatures can drop significantly at night even during the dry season. During the rainy season, from October to April, the trails can become quite challenging due to frequent rain and possible snowfall. Always check local weather reports in advance and pack accordingly to ensure a safe and comfortable trekking experience.

THE TEMPERATURE.

The temperature during the trek can vary greatly between day and night. During the day, temperatures may range between 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit, providing a comfortable environment for trekking. However, as night falls, the mercury can drop to around freezing point. Special care should be taken to pack warm clothing, thermal layers, and a good quality sleeping bag, especially if you are trekking outside the peak summer months. Always remember, proper preparation can make the difference between a challenging ordeal and an unforgettable adventure.

WHEN TO GO:

When planning your 7 Lakes Trek adventure, it’s important to consider not only the seasonal weather but also your personal fitness level and crowd preferences. The peak trekking season, running from May to September, sees the highest footfall, providing ample opportunity to meet fellow hikers but also leading to crowded trails. If you prefer solitude and are well-prepared for unpredictable weather, consider trekking in the shoulder seasons – late April to early May or late September to October. During these times, the weather is relatively stable, the trails are less busy, and the changing seasons offer a different perspective on the natural beauty of the area. However, avoid trekking during the winter months (November – April) when heavy snowfall can make the trails inaccessible and dangerous. As always, keep a close eye on weather forecasts, and adjust your plans accordingly.

The Ausangate region, home to the 7 Lakes Trek, boasts a rich biodiversity that is truly a delight for nature enthusiasts. This high-altitude ecosystem provides a habitat for a myriad of flora and fauna. Among these, the Puya Raimondii, the world’s tallest flowering plant, stands as a testament to the unique biodiversity of the region. Remember to tread lightly and respect these natural habitats; they’re integral to the ecosystem and the local culture.

In addition to the stunning natural beauty, trekking in the Ausangate region also offers a unique cultural experience. The area is home to various indigenous communities, each with their own rich traditions and customs. As you hike through the mountains, you may have the opportunity to interact with locals and learn about their way of life. Many trekking routes pass through small villages where you can see llamas and alpacas grazing. These animals play a vital role in the local economy and culture. Llamas and alpacas are native to the Andean region and have been domesticated for thousands of years for their wool, meat, and as beasts of burden.

Safety should always be a top priority when trekking in the Ausangate region. Consideration for the high altitude, unpredictable weather, and rugged terrain is essential. It is recommended to acclimatize to the altitude for a few days before starting the trek to prevent altitude sickness. Always carry the necessary gear, including warm clothing, sun protection, and hiking boots. Stay hydrated and bring high-energy snacks. Remember, if you’re not an experienced hiker, it’s advisable to hire a local guide who knows the region well and can lead you safely through the mountains. • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.
