Detailed Tour Itinerary

Detailed itinerary for Cusco City Tour

Join us on an unforgettable Cusco City Tour!

Our expert-guided itinerary starts at 01:30 p.m, picking you up from your hotel. Get ready to explore 6 incredible places that showcase the wonders of this historical city.

First, we’ll visit “Qoricancha,” the Temple of the Sun of the Incas. Today, it houses the impressive Santo Domingo Convent, which holds one of the most important Religious Centers from the Inca era. Marvel at the smallest stone intricately carved by the Incas. Located just 4 blocks away from the main square, this archaeological site is a must-see.

Next on our list is The Cathedral, a masterpiece of religious art. Construction began in 1560 and took 94 years to complete. Inside, you’ll find around 400 paintings from the renowned Cusquenian School, including works by the famous artist Diego Quispe Tito.

As we move beyond the city, prepare to be awed by the grandeur of Sacsayhuamán, also known as the Puma’s head. This majestic site boasts impressive stone works, some weighing up to 120 tons. These stones were transported by hardworking Inca laborers from distant quarries. At this location, you’ll also discover where the famous INTI RAYMI or Sun Festival takes place every year on June 24th.

Our next destination is Q’enqo, an important religious center dedicated to earth worship and believed to have been used for funeral rituals. Just a short bus ride away, our journey takes us to “Puca Pucara” (Red Place), a military and control center that once served as a mandatory stop for Inca travelers. Finally, we’ll visit Tambomachay, a magnificent temple of water, where adoration and worship of water took place.

After this incredible tour, we will return to the city of Cusco. Don’t miss out on this fascinating city tour experience!

Important

Important info

Cusco City is located at over 3400 meters above sea level. Cusco City is a high altitude city, and that means very thin air for sea-level dwellers, which can take few days getting used to. In fact, it’s advisable to work your way up to this altitude and visit some of Cusco City’s slightly lower sights first – Sacred Valley Tour is an ideal place.

When flying directly to Cusco City from Lima, anticipate a slightest altitude sickness of soroche, which might produce tiredness, headaches and vomiting. Don’t overexert yourself, do not eat or drink too much (especially with the booze), and consider to try a mouthful of coca leaves, or perhaps some coca leaf tea, which actuality does help.

Travel information

Cusco Travel Information

Cusco, often spelled Cuzco, is a city in southeastern Peru, near the Urubamba Valley of the Andes Mountain range. It’s renowned as the former capital of the Inca Empire and is now known for its archaeological remains and Spanish colonial architecture. Plaza de Armas is the central square, with baroque-style Cusco Cathedral and the Church La Compañía de Jesús. The city’s altitude of approximately 3,400m lends it a unique, high-altitude climate, and its rich history and vibrant culture make it a must-visit for travelers.

History:

Cusco is steeped in rich history that extends far beyond its culinary traditions. Formerly the historic capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco is an amalgamation of indigenous and colonial influences. It’s home to numerous archaeological relics, including the renowned Machu Picchu, the sacred Inca site that attracts visitors from around the world. The city’s architecture is a testament to its layered past, with Inca stonework serving as foundations for Spanish colonial buildings. As you explore Cusco, every cobblestone street and ancient site narrates a tale of the city’s fascinating past, offering a deeper understanding of its present cultural and culinary landscape.

Getting There:

Getting to Cusco is somewhat straightforward, despite its high-altitude and somewhat remote location. The most common way to arrive is by air, with Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport serving as the city’s main gateway. Several airlines offer direct flights from Lima, the capital of Peru, and the flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes. Alternatively, for those who prefer a scenic journey, a train ride from Puno or Arequipa to Cusco offers breathtaking views of the Andes. The train journey can take anywhere between 6 to 10 hours, depending on the service chosen. For the truly adventurous, a road trip through the Peruvian highlands is an unforgettable experience.

When to Go:

The best time to visit Cusco is during the dry season, from May to September. During these months, the weather is generally clear and sunny, making it ideal for hiking and sightseeing. However, it’s also the busiest period and can be crowded, especially in June and July. On the other hand, the wet season, from October to April, sees fewer visitors, but the frequent rain can make outdoor activities challenging. Regardless of the time of year, due to the high altitude, temperatures in Cusco can drop significantly at night, so it’s always advisable to pack warm clothing.

Where to Stay:

There is a wide range of accommodation options in Cusco to suit all budgets and preferences. For those seeking luxury, the Belmond Hotel Monasterio offers unparalleled service and comfort in a former 16th-century monastery. Mid-range options include the boutique-style Casa Andina, Hotel San Agustin, Hotel Prisma which offers a blend of modern amenities and traditional charm. Budget travelers will appreciate the Kokopelli Hostel with its vibrant atmosphere and friendly staff. For a unique stay, consider the Niños Hotel, which uses its proceeds to provide meals and aid for local children in need. Regardless of where you stay, most hotels and hostels offer assistance in arranging tours and transport, ensuring a hassle-free experience in Cusco.

Things to Do:

Cusco offers a plethora of attractions for history buffs, nature lovers, and adventure seekers alike. The city’s historical center, brimming with well-preserved colonial architecture and stunning cathedrals, invites exploration. Be sure to visit the Plaza de Armas, the heart of the city, which is surrounded by restaurants, shops, and historical buildings, including the Cathedral of Cusco and the Church of La Compañía. For a journey into the past, take a trip to the nearby Inca ruins of Sacsayhuamán, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. All are easily accessible from the city and offer fascinating insights into the Incan civilization.

Nature lovers should not miss a visit to the awe-inspiring Rainbow Mountain, a full-day trip from Cusco. This natural wonder is renowned for its multicolored slopes, a result of mineral deposits in the soil. Remember that the hike is strenuous due to the high altitude, so it’s recommended to acclimatize in Cusco for a few days before attempting it.

Adrenaline junkies can get their fix with activities like white water rafting in the Urubamba River, zip-lining in the Sacred Valley, or mountain biking in the Andes. Alternatively, take a scenic train ride to the town of Aguas Calientes and spend a day exploring the world-renowned Incan citadel of Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
