This renowned trail covers 45 km (26 miles) and crosses two high passes, including the famous “Dead Woman Pass” at a staggering elevation of 4,200m (13,779ft). Be prepared for steep sections and intermittent rain, even during the dry season. Temperatures can fluctuate dramatically, ranging from hot and dry during the day (18°C to 26°C) to potentially below freezing at night.

Kindly inform us before departure if you choose the non-hiking option.
Inca Trail Itinerary:
Day 3: Pisqhakuchu or Km 82 (2,750m) to Wayllabamba (3,000m)
Our adventure begins at Pisqhakuchu, better known as Kilometer 82, a spot where the Inca Trail officially starts. As we set off, the trail initially runs alongside the river, offering a gentle introduction to the landscape with spectacular views of snow-capped mountains in the distance. As we traverse the initial path, we’ll pass through small villages and eucalyptus groves, allowing you to observe both local culture and natural beauty. Along the way, we’ll have our first stop to visit Llactapata, a prominent Inca site that introduces us to the rich history that awaits.
The trail then gradually ascends towards Wayllabamba, the first campsite situated at 3,000 meters above sea level. This section of the trail is known for its diverse flora, including vibrant wildflowers and dense patches of polylepis trees, which create a mystical, enchanted forest atmosphere. Upon reaching Wayllabamba, you’ll be greeted with breathtaking vistas of the surrounding valleys and peaks. As the day draws to a close, we’ll set up camp and enjoy a hearty meal, prepared by our skilled cooks, fueling us for the challenging days ahead.
- Distance: Approx. 11 km
- Hiking time: Estimated 6 – 7 hrs
- Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Wayllabamba (3,000m) – Warmi wañusqha Pass (4,200m) – Pacaymayu (3,600m)
Day 2 of our journey is both challenging and rewarding, as we ascend from Wayllabamba to the highest point of the Inca Trail, the Warmi wañusqha Pass, also known as Dead Woman’s Pass, at an elevation of 4,200 meters. As we leave Wayllabamba, the trail winds through lush forests and alongside crystal-clear streams. The air becomes thinner and the climb steeper, testing our endurance and determination. The effort is truly worth it, though, as the panoramic views from the top of the pass are simply breathtaking.
From the summit, we’ll begin our descent into the Pacaymayu Valley, where we eventually settle at an elevation of 3,600 meters. The descent brings its own set of challenges, but the changing landscapes—from high-altitude tundra to verdant valleys—serve as a constant reminder of the natural wonders that surround us. Upon reaching Pacaymayu, you’ll have time to rest and appreciate the serene environment before enjoying another delicious meal prepared by our team. The combination of physical exertion and awe-inspiring scenery makes Day 2 an unforgettable part of our trek.
- Distance: Approx. 12 km
- Hiking time: Estimated 7 – 8 hrs
- Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5: Pacaymayu (3,600m) – Phuyupatamarka (3,600m) – Wiñaywayna (2,600m)
On Day 3, we embark on a journey that is as rich in history as it is in scenic beauty. Our path will take us through a series of remarkable archaeological sites, providing a deeper understanding of the ancient Inca civilization. We begin with an ascent to Runkurakay, a circular structure believed to have served as a watchtower. As we continue, the landscape shifts dramatically; the crisp mountain air is accompanied by flourishing cloud forests, creating an almost dreamlike atmosphere.
Next, we reach the impressive complex of Sayacmarca, which offers a labyrinth of stone buildings and terraces. After exploring this enigmatic site, we proceed to the aptly named Phuyupatamarka, or “Town in the Clouds”. At this altitude, the panoramic views are nothing short of spectacular, with clouds weaving through the peaks and valleys like ethereal veils.
From Phuyupatamarka, our trail descends through luscious greenery and intricate Incan stairways, leading us to our final resting spot for the day, Wiñaywayna. This site, known for its steep terraces and impressive ruins, sits at a lower elevation of 2,600 meters. It offers a fascinating glimpse into the agricultural practices of the Incas, showcasing their ingenuity and adaptation to the mountainous terrain. As evening sets in, we’ll enjoy another nourishing meal, relishing in the day’s adventures and the anticipation of our journey’s final leg to Machu Picchu.
- Distance: Approx. 17 km
- Hiking time: Estimated 8 – 9 hrs
- Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6: Wiñaywayna (2,600m) – Intipunku (Sun Gate) (2,750m) – Machu Picchu (2,400m)
The anticipation reaches its peak on Day 4, as we embark on the final leg of our adventure, culminating in the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. Our journey begins early in the morning from Wiñaywayna, moving through lush foliage and the ever-intriguing paths carved by the Incas. Today, we aim to reach Intipunku, also known as the Sun Gate, which stands at an elevation of 2,750 meters. This gateway offers the first breathtaking glimpse of Machu Picchu and is aptly named for the celestial views it provides at sunrise.
The path to Intipunku is imbued with a sense of excitement and reverence. As we navigate the ancient stone steps, the gradual ascent rewards us with emerging views of the valley bathed in the soft morning light. Reaching the Sun Gate feels like a moment of triumph; the iconic sight of Machu Picchu sprawling out below is nothing short of magical, and the culmination of our journey is celebrated in this serene setting.
From Intipunku, a gentle descent leads us directly into the heart of Machu Picchu. At 2,400 meters, this enigmatic site unfolds with its intricate stonework, terraced fields, and temples that whisper tales of a storied past. As we explore the ruins, each corner reveals new marvels of Incan engineering and spirituality, from the precision of the Temple of the Sun to the enigmatic Intihuatana stone.
Walking through Machu Picchu is a transformative experience, blending moments of introspection with the awe of standing in a place steeped in history. This day not only marks the physical end of our trail but also leaves us with a profound sense of connection to the ancient world. As the sun sets on our final day, we reflect on the remarkable journey and the memories forged along the way.

Packing List
RECOMMENDED THINGS TO TAKE FOR DISCOVERY INCA HIGHWAY:
When touring Cusco, make sure to pack an open mind and a sense of humor! Avoid having too many preconceived ideas about Peru, as this will allow you to discover incredible new experiences and possibilities during your trip. Travel light and don’t worry about forgetting items; you can easily purchase them in Cusco. Tourist shops offer a wide range of products, including water bottles, first aid kits, and hiking gear. Additionally, you have the option to rent hiking equipment in Cusco, which is convenient if you don’t want to carry heavy gear from home.
Packing List:
After surveying our customers who have toured Cusco & Machu Picchu, we have compiled our definitive list of what to pack for a trip to Machu Picchu in Peru.
- A GOOD PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS OR WALKING SHOES.- This is not the place to bring those high heels ladies! Steps and uneven cobble stone surfaces abound and if it rains the stones can get slippery.
- A PONCHO FOR THOSE DOWNPOURS.- The weather changes very quickly here. An ideal solution is to carry a good quality poncho in your daypack at all times particularly during the rainy season from November / March. (You can buy ponchos in any of the tourist shops in Cusco but the quality isn’t always great.)
- A WARM JACKET.- Evenings and mornings can be very cold particularly between June – September so a good quality, waterproof and ideally windproof jacket is ideal. Another good option is a warm fleece which you can wear under a light-weight waterproof, windproof jacket.
- GOOD QUALITY SUNSCREEN AND A SUNHAT.- Due to the altitude and Peru’s location close to the Equator frequent application of sunscreen is advised to avoid any nasty sunburn. Be warned, even when it’s cloudy here you can get very burnt.
- BRING CLOTHES THAT YOU CAN LAYER.- Cool mornings mean you may want to wrap up as you set off for a day’s exploring, however by 11am you might want to strip down to a t-shirt and shorts. Warm layers and trousers that can be unzipped into shorts are great. You will only need a couple or three changes of clothes as you can get washing done anywhere cheaply.
- A DAY-PACK TO CARRY ALL YOUR BITS AND PIECES.- ideally with a hip strap to make long days hiking and exploring more comfortable.
- A WATER BOTTLE.- Plastic disposal is a real problem in the Sacred Valley so we recommend you buy large bottles and refill water into your own re-useable bottle.
- SMALL FIRST AID KIT FOR BASIC CUTS AND BRUISES AND TUMMY UPSETS.- Pharmacies abound in Cusco and other small towns in the Sacred Valley where you can buy basic first aid and medical supplies. Do make sure however, that you bring enough of any prescription medicine you might need as some brands and types of medicine might not be available in Peru. A good rule of thumb is to bring enough prescription medicine to cover you for the length of your trip plus an extra week in case you get delayed.
- A spare pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses plus a copy of your prescription is a good idea.
- A SMALL POCKET SIZE TORCH.
- Earplugs for when you are stuck in a noisy room or want to sleep on the bus or plane.
- A DUCKPACK.- or rainproof covering for your daypack or backpack is a must particularly if you are travelling during the rainy season to avoid wet clothes and personal items. This is particularly important if you are going to be doing any multi-day hiking including the Inca Trail.
- A HAT, SCARF AND GLOVES FOR THOSE COLD MORNINGS AND EVENINGS.- You can buy fabulous Peruvian style hats and gloves at the local markets so don’t worry if you forget to bring these with you.
- PACK YOUR TOILETRIES IN ZIP LOCK BAGS.- For some reason the altitude can cause shampoo and other bottles to pop leaving a nasty mess in your bag, Pack all toiletries in sealed bags to avoid any unnecessary mess.
- INSECT REPELLENT.- particularly if you plan on going trekking the INca Trail to Machu Picchu.
- CAMERA.- with lots of memory and battery for all those great shots you are definitely going to want to take.
Take enough padlocks for every double zipper to stop wandering hands and lock up your important belongings, even in your hotel room.
Packing Essentials:
- Passport with minimum 6 month validity left.
- Photocopies of important documents like passport and tickets. Keep these separate from the originals.
- Travel insurance.
- Prescriptions for any medication you require. Most chemists will sell medicine over the counter without a prescription, but if you are searched by immigration it’s good to be able to show you require what you’re carrying.
Travel Information
Travel Information About 7-Day Discovery Inca Highway
Please read the following tour information carefully, as it will help you answer some of your questions about our services and the Discovery Inca Highway.
ARRIVAL IN CUSCO
You will be met at the Cusco airport and taken to your hotel. Please inform us of your flight details at least 14 days before your arrival. Look for our representative with a “SUNRISE PERU TREK” sign in the airport. Note that you need to leave the airport or terminal to find our representative as they cannot enter.
THE BRIEFING
Briefing for the 7-day Discovery Inca Highway will be held the night before the trek at 6 pm in either our office or your hotel. During the briefing, you will meet your trekking guide and have the chance to ask any questions or address any concerns. Additionally, you will settle the remaining balance of the tour.
CAN I STORE MY LUGGAGE IN YOUR OFFICE?
Yes, you can absolutely store your luggage in our office! We understand that when travellers embark on the 7-day Discovery Inca Highway, they are likely to have multiple bags with them. To make things easier for both us and you while on the trail, we recommend that only the necessary items be brought in small duffle bags that we provide. This way, your main luggage can remain safely stored until you return from this amazing experience. Alternatively, if it’s more convenient for you, your luggage can also be kept at your hotel.
CAN I CHANGE THE DATE AFTER I PURCHASE THE TICKET?
Unfortunately, the answer to your question is a definitive NO. The Peruvian government does not allow any changes to be made after tickets have been purchased. This means that neither the date nor the person who purchases the ticket can be changed once it has already been bought. The permits are also non-transferable and non-refundable, so if you choose to cancel your Discovery Inca Highway, then your deposit will not be refunded in any way or form whatsoever. It’s important to double check your plans before making a purchase in order to ensure they won’t change after you make the purchase as changing them afterwards is not possible under any circumstances according to Peru’s government regulations. To avoid disappointment it is strongly recommended that everyone make sure their itinerary is firm before submitting payment and buying their permit as even if something beyond their control comes up afterwards, there will no longer be an option for changing those plans without having lost that money.
DO I NEED MY ORIGINAL PASSPORT FOR DISCOVERY INCA HIGHWAY?
Yes, you absolutely need to have your original passport for the 7-day Discovery Inca Highway. This is because of the importance of having the exact same passport that you provided with your booking permit before entering Machu Picchu and for the Inca Trail. Your passport will be verified when you enter Machu Picchu, when embarking on the Inca Trail, and also while boarding your train. If you are renewing your passport, feel free to send us a copy of your old passport prior to getting a new one so that we can secure the permit beforehand –– and then once you get it, kindly send us a copy of it as soon as possible. Being aware is extremely important in this kind of situation due to all restrictions enforced by Peru authorities having strict regulations revolving around documentation required for entering such sites––such as passports being mandatory during check-in times at these archaeological areas––so do keep in mind that it’s best if you have two original copies available (one extra just in case).
DUFFEL BAG AND SMALL BACKPACK FOR 7-DAY DISCOVERY INCA HIGHWAY
Before your trek, you’ll receive a duffel bag to pack your clothes for the five-day journey. The duffel bag can weigh up to 7 kg / 15 lbs to comply with Peruvian law and protect the health of the Inca Trail porters. All bags will be weighed before acceptance. If you exceed the weight limit, you’ll need to carry the extra weight in your personal backpack. Out of the 7 kilos, set aside 2 kilos for your sleeping bag and 1 kilo for your mattress (foam or air). This leaves approximately 4 kilos for your personal gear. The porters will transport your duffel bag along with food and camping equipment, but keep in mind that you won’t have access to your items until the end of each day. During the hike, you’ll need a day pack that can fit your personal belongings like a warm jacket, raincoat, camera, sunscreen, snacks, water, etc. A 30 to 40L backpack will suffice.
IS THE TREK DIFFICULT? DO I NEED TO BE IN GOOD SHAPE?
Yes, the 7-day Discovery Inca Highway trek is difficult, and you must be in good shape. It is a 45km (26 miles) long hike through the Andes that reaches a maximum altitude of 13,779 ft (4200 m). On the second day of the hike, we’ll climb two mountains. You should be moderately fit prior to starting this trek, and it is highly recommended to exercise regularly for several months before embarking on this journey. Try walking 9 miles or 15 km per day as part of your preparation regime. It’s also important to acclimatize yourself to altitude before beginning – aim for 2–3 days in Cusco (3350m / 11,047ft) beforehand. Doing so will reduce any chances of developing complicated health issues such as acute mountain sickness while on the trail. Overall, being well-prepared and having a good physical condition are key elements for completing this adventure with success!
WHAT IF I CAN’T COMPLETE THE TREKKING?
The chance that you won’t be able to complete the 7-day Discovery Inca Highway trek is pretty slim, but it’s always wise to prepare for any situation. In the unlikely event where this happens due to health reasons, our team is ready and well-equipped with oxygen kits in case of any breathing difficulty, and helicopter evacuation can also be arranged at a cost. Travel insurance is required as there are no refunds either way. You will be taken to the nearest city and will receive help with transportation to Cusco or “Aguas Calientes” depending on the situation. If you make a quick recovery after being taken off the trail, it’s possible that you can still visit Machu Picchu according to your original plan by taking a train from Ollantaytambo (at an additional cost). However, if you’re not up for continuing, then simply enjoy Peru and its cultural sites! The main priority is always your safety and well-being, so don’t hesitate to communicate with our team if you have any concerns or difficulties during the trek. Remember, there are always alternative options available and we are here to assist you every step of the way. So don’t let this possibility discourage you from embarking on this incredible journey! With proper preparation and caution, completing the trek should be a rewarding experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. Good luck and happy exploring!
