DETAILED ITINERARY FOR CUSCO CLASSIC TOUR

1st Day.- Arrival to Cusco and city tour:

The Four-day Cusco Classic Tour begins with your arrival in Cusco before noon. We kindly request your flight details so that we can arrange for your reception and transfer to the designated hotel. Once at the hotel, you will receive a comprehensive briefing about the trip, accompanied by a comforting cup of Coca tea, known for its altitude acclimatization properties. As you may know, Cusco is situated at an elevation of 3,400 meters above sea level.

In the afternoon, an expert guide will lead you on a captivating city tour, commencing at 01:30 p.m. We will pick you up from the hotel and embark on a guided exploration, during which you will have the opportunity to visit six remarkable attractions. Entrance to the archaeological centers and museums is included in the tour.

The city tour encompasses a visit to the Main Square, showcasing a blend of Inca and colonial architecture, as well as the Cathedral, housing an impressive collection of over 400 paintings from the XVI and XVII centuries, predominantly from the renowned Cusco painting school, headed by the esteemed “Diego Quispe Tito”. Delve into the splendor of Inca architecture at the Qoricancha, also known as the Temple of the Sun.

Additionally, you will explore Inca archaeological sites located outside the city, such as the awe-inspiring Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, along with other significant Inca temples like Qenqo, Puka Pukara, and Tambomachay. The tour concludes at approximately 06:30 p.m. at the Main Square, allowing you to savor a delightful dinner at one of the city’s exquisite restaurants. Overnight accommodations are included, although meals are not provided.

Recommendations:

• For the tour take with you small backpack where you can carry your camera, snacks, water, warm jacket and rain gear.
• After the tour take a walk through the “Plaza de Armas” and its surroundings where you can appreciate the work of Cusco artisans in craft shops, you can also taste the famous Peruvian cuisine in the nearby restaurants or you can simply take a break in one of the Seats of the Plaza and then take the classic photos to remember in a warm atmosphere despite the cold of Cusco nights. And if you like the night around the square you will find many nightclubs and bars full of tourists and locals who expect to have fun.

2th Day.- Sacred valley of the Incas (Pisaq and Ollantaytambo):

On the second day of the tour, we will explore the Sacred Valley of the Incas, visiting the remarkable sites of Pisaq and Ollantaytambo.

After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, our day begins at 07:30 a.m. We will provide transportation in our private bus to pick you up from the hotel and embark on a journey to the Sacred Valley. Our first stop will be at “Awana Kancha,” where you can witness local weavers utilizing traditional techniques and observe fascinating animals such as llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, guanacos, and sury. This is also an excellent place for purchasing souvenirs, if desired.

Next, we will continue our drive to the picturesque town of Pisac, famous for its charming local market. You will have 45 minutes of free time to explore the market and perhaps find some unique items to take home.

Following our visit to the market, we will take a scenic drive up the mountain to reach the Inca ruins of Pisaq. Here, you will marvel at the intricate Inca terraces that were once used for agriculture, playing a crucial role in supplying food to the Incas.

Continuing through the breathtaking Sacred Valley for approximately one hour, we will make a stop in the town of Urubamba for lunch (not included). This lush and fertile region remains a significant source of agricultural products, particularly corn and vegetables, which provide sustenance for the city of Cusco.

After lunch, we will proceed with a half-hour drive to the captivating town of Ollantaytambo. Renowned for its exceptional Inca urban planning and engineering, Ollantaytambo showcases magnificent steep terraces that guard the Inca Fortress. Additionally, it holds historical significance as one of the few places where the Spanish conquistadors suffered a major defeat. Following your visit to Ollantaytambo, you will have free time to explore the town.

In the afternoon, you will board a two-hour train journey to the town of “Aguas Calientes/Hot Waters,” where you will be accommodated in a hotel.

This day of the tour promises awe-inspiring landscapes and encounters with Inca history, inviting you to immerse yourself in the rich heritage of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

Recommendations:

• You’ll need to check out the hotel and leave your belongings in the storage of the Hotel, because you’ll use another hotel in the town of Aguas calientes, the town near Machu Picchu.
• Carry with you small back pack with basic things: warm jacket, Insect repellent, sunblock, sun hat, bottle of water, one t-shirt, rain gear, Personal things since you’ll return the next day.
• We suggest that you wear appropriate shoes or shoes, you will climb many steps.
• Do not forget to try the empanadas and bring some souvenir of crafts in the town of Pisaq.
• At Urubamba you will enjoy a delicious buffet lunch where we invite you to try the corn from the Sacred Valley.
• In the town of Aguas Calientes you can go to the hot spring so, take with you your bathing clothes. Entrance is 20 soles or US$ 6 per person.

3th Day.- Machu Picchu Tour:

Arriving in Cusco.

Arriving in Cusco for 4-day Cusco Classic Tour, can be done through the Cusco airport, but please note that it currently only serves domestic flights. If you are coming from an international destination, you will need to disembark in Lima and clear Customs before continuing to Cusco. It’s important to remember that even if you have a connecting flight to Cusco on the same day and with the same airline, you will still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and then check them in again.

For transportation to Cusco, air travel is recommended as the best option. There are several airlines to choose from, with LAN being one of the popular but more expensive choices. It’s worth noting that flight delays or cancellations can occur due to the high altitude weather conditions in Cusco. In such cases, air traffic may be temporarily halted. Alternatively, bus travel is available and can be a good option, especially if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco like Puno. Buses in Peru are well maintained and comfortable, although the journey from Lima can be quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.

Transfers in/out.

When you reach Cusco, our team will be waiting for you at the airport. Look for our representative with a white board displaying the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrival terminal. Once you meet them, they will transfer you to your reserved hotel.

For the return transfer, we will pick you up from your hotel 2 hours before the time specified in your airline tickets. The drive from your hotel to the airport typically takes around 20-30 minutes, but may vary due to traffic conditions. Once at the airport, you will need to check your flights and settle the airport taxes.

About the Altitude.

Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially Cusco. The air at higher altitudes has less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. To help your body adjust, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any Andes trek. Cusco is a vibrant city with plenty to explore, so you won’t run out of things to do while acclimating.

Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising are some common effects. If you experience any severe symptoms, please get in touch with our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor.

In most cases, these symptoms will be mild. To ease your adjustment, start your activities slowly and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or coca tea. It is advisable to limit your consumption of alcohol and coffee as they can increase urination and dehydration. Smoking should also be avoided as it hampers your body’s oxygen absorption.
