The trek starts and ends in Q’ochas, but during these two days you’ll be treated to breathtaking views, rich cultural heritage from mountain people who have been living here for centuries, as well as untamed nature which continues to surprise and captivate explorers. The terrain is challenging yet accessible as you make your way around this ancient glacier. Despite it being situated within a tropical region, it still retains its icy beauty, with towering walls of ice that reach far into the horizon. It’s an experience like no other!

How long is the Qelccaya Trekking?

The Qelccaya Trekking is a great option if you want to explore the wild and remote areas of the Peruvian Andes. This 2-day trek, beginning and concluding at Q’ochas, offers an unforgettable journey through captivating mountainous landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Hikers will embark on a route that leads to one of Peru’s biggest attractions, the Qelccaya glacier—one of the largest glaciers found in a tropical region.

For two days, immerse yourself in spectacularly rugged surroundings while witnessing untouched nature all around you. The complete trail covers 24 km (15 miles) over challenging terrain, but don’t be concerned; experienced guides will accompany you every step of the way to ensure your safety and share captivating stories about local culture.

What type of physical challenge should I expect from the trek?

Taking part in the Qelccaya Trekking experience will provide a physical challenge unlike anything you’ve ever encountered before. This two-day adventure in the lofty mountain town of Phinaya leads trekkers around an impressive glacial ice cap located within one of the world’s most biodiverse tropical regions. Expect a steep and winding path that ascends to the glacier amid stunning mountainous scenery and pristine rivers.

You will traverse steep hillsides filled with obstacles—like loose gravel and small boulders—as you head towards the summit of Qelccaya. Be prepared to take breaks as necessary for acclimatization to altitudes exceeding 5,600 meters above sea level. However, these slopes are relatively manageable compared to other hikes around Peru, making the challenge rewarding.

How can I experience the local culture while participating in the Qelccaya Trekking?

The Qelccaya Trekking is a unique and amazing experience for anyone looking to explore Peru’s remote and wild areas of the Andes! This 2-day trek around the majestic ice cap of Qelccaya will immerse you in untouched nature and a way of life that has remained unchanged for centuries. As you traverse this stunning landscape, you’ll witness snow-covered peaks juxtaposed with crystal clear lakes, lush valleys filled with rare flora and fauna, and an abundance of wildlife.

You’ll gain insight into local culture by visiting small villages where residents practice traditional agriculture, observe llama herders tending their flocks to ancient melodies, and experience rituals held at sacred Inca sites that honour Pachamama (Mother Earth) with offerings such as quinoa beer steeped in time-honoured traditions.

How large are the trekking groups, and what’s the guide-to-participant ratio?

When it comes to trekking, group sizes and guide-to-participant ratios can vary by tour operator and trek type. Typically, smaller groups—often limited to a maximum of 10 participants—allow for a more personalized experience. In these smaller settings, you can expect a guide-to-participant ratio of about 1:4 or 1:5, ensuring each participant receives ample attention and support throughout the journey.

Larger groups range from 16 to 20 members, maintaining a guide-to-participant ratio of 8:1 to enhance safety in nature’s wilderness. This approach balances individual experience with the safety and guidance needed when exploring such a formidable landscape.

What to Pack for Your Trek

Preparing for your adventure in the Andes requires careful consideration of what to pack. Essential items include sturdy hiking boots designed for rugged terrain, moisture-wicking clothing to keep you comfortable throughout the changes in weather, and a quality rain jacket for those unpredictable showers. Don’t forget to bring a durable daypack for essentials like water, snacks, and a first aid kit.

A wide-brimmed hat and sunscreen are advisable to protect your skin from the high-altitude sun, while a pair of trekking poles can provide stability on challenging paths. Additionally, consider bringing a reusable water bottle equipped with a filtration system to ensure you stay hydrated while minimizing your environmental impact.

Trekking Etiquette

Understanding and practicing proper trekking etiquette not only enhances your experience but also preserves the beauty of the Andes for future adventurers. First and foremost, always respect the local environment—stick to marked trails to minimize your impact on fragile ecosystems and avoid littering by carrying out any waste you generate, including biodegradable materials. It’s also crucial to interact respectfully with local communities, supporting their culture and traditions.

When encountering wildlife, maintain a safe distance; it’s important to observe animals in their natural habitat without disturbing them. Furthermore, a courteous attitude toward fellow trekkers fosters a welcoming atmosphere on the trails. By following these guidelines, you contribute to the sustainable enjoyment of the breathtaking landscapes and rich cultures throughout your journey in the Andes.

Safety Guidelines for Trekkers

Ensuring safety while trekking is crucial for a rewarding experience. Check weather forecasts before your journey; mountain conditions change rapidly. Trek in numbers for safety and have a charged mobile phone and portable charger, though coverage may be spotty. Know basic navigation skills, like using maps and a compass, even with GPS. Carry a first aid kit and know basic procedures. Assess your physical limits; don’t overexert and take breaks to stay hydrated and nourished. Following these guidelines ensures both your safety and that of your fellow trekkers on the trails.

Environmental Considerations for Trekkers

When trekking in pristine natural environments, it’s crucial to adopt practices that safeguard the ecosystem. The principle of “Leave No Trace” should guide your adventures—this involves sticking to marked trails to prevent soil erosion and protecting native flora and fauna. Always pack out what you bring in, including food wrappers and personal items, to minimize your impact on the landscape. Opt for biodegradable toiletries and ensure to dispose of waste responsibly, using designated facilities when available.

Engaging in eco-friendly practices not only preserves the delicate balance of these ecosystems but also enhances your experience by allowing you to immerse yourself in the untouched beauty that nature has to offer. By improving your environmental footprint, you contribute to the sustainable preservation of the striking Andes and inspire others to do the same.

Whether you’re traveling with family, your special someone, or for your honeymoon, we have a special trek program designed just for you. With the flexibility to depart on any day and choose your preferred group size, your experience will be tailored to your preferences. Unlike other tours, we won’t add any people to your group – it will be arranged exclusively for you. Our Private Group Tours include additional services, such as extra porters, horses for riding, and assistance with carrying your personal gear on alternate treks. Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure with us and create unforgettable memories.
