DAY 1: Cusco – Paucartambo – Cloud Forest – Bamboo Lodge.

4-Day Manu National Park tour starts in Cusco, where you will be picked up at your hotel in our private minivan at 5:30 AM. Our destination for the day is the cloud forest in Manu National Park, but first, we will make a stop at The Tombs, a historic Pre-Inca site at Ninamarca. Known as “the place of fire” in Quechua, it holds great cultural significance. After this, get ready for a breathtaking four-hour journey through stunning mountain vistas and valleys. As we pass through the village of Paucartambo, the folkloric capital of Cusco, you’ll be captivated by the beautiful Spanish colonial architecture and a stone bridge.

Next, we’ll reach the lookout point at Acjanaco, located at 4,000m (13,123 ft) above sea level, marking our entrance into the Manu National Park. Prepare to be enchanted as we traverse the pristine cloud forest, which sustains unique flora found only in this region. CASCADING WATERFALLS, sweeping views of the valley, and the dense vegetation of the cloud forest create a stunning landscape. Keep an eye out for orchids, lichens, mosses, and rare bird species that call this place home. If you’re lucky, you might even spot Capuchin monkeys and wooly monkeys swinging through the trees. All meals are included on this day, except for breakfast. You will spend the night at either Bamboo Lodge or Guadalupe Lodge, immersing yourself in the heart of this natural paradise.

DAY 2: Bamboo Lodge – Atalaya – Machuwasi Lagoon – Pantiacolla Lodge.

Welcome to the incredible Manu National Park! On Day 2 of our adventure, we will embark on an exciting journey, starting with a visit to the beautiful Bamboo Lodge. Next, we’ll travel on a minivan and head to the village of Atalaya (1:30hrs.); where we will board a motorized riverboat. Brace yourself for an exhilarating ride along the turbulent Alto Madre de Dios River, eventually reaching the serene waters of “Machuwasi Lagoon”. Here, you’ll be captivated by the diverse birdlife, including prehistoric birds like the hoatzin and The Screamer, as well as majestic egrets. Keep an eye out for caimans too! Glide through the reflective waters on traditional balsam pole rafts and immerse yourself in this truly awe-inspiring experience.

As we venture deeper into the heart of Pantiacolla, prepare to encounter a myriad of incredible wildlife. Observe howler monkeys resting in the trees, river otters frolicking in the water, and capibaras foraging along the shores. Our private reserve boasts an untouched primary forest, which remains pristine due to the value placed on conservation by our esteemed visitors like yourself. Here, you’ll witness the splendor of traditional fauna, including medicinal plants, awe-inspiring giant trees like the ficus estrangulador, lush bamboo forests, and vibrant leks frequented by mammals and parrots. These exclusive encounters are reserved solely for our lucky travelers.

For those seeking an exceptional experience, we offer a guided night walk to observe the captivating world of nocturnal animals and insects. At the end of this remarkable day, retire to the Pantiacolla Lodge, a hidden gem nestled amidst the forest. Elevated on stilts and blending harmoniously with its surroundings, the lodge offers a vantage point for observing both nocturnal and diurnal animals, including monkeys and birds. Rest assured, all meals are included, ensuring you have a delightful and satisfying stay in this remarkable place. Get ready for more unforgettable adventures as we continue to explore the wonders of Manu National Park!

DAY 3: Parrot Clay Lick – Pantiacolla – Lodge.

On Day 3 of the tour, we will begin the morning by heading to the macaw lek to observe the mesmerizing sight of hundreds of macaws and parrots feeding on the river bank’s salty mud. As we patiently wait on the opposite side of the river, we might be lucky enough to witness the appearance of other fascinating creatures like toucans, howler monkeys, the shy river otter, or even the capybara. After a satisfying breakfast, we will embark on an exciting jungle trip to explore the awe-inspiring ancient trees that stand just five kilometers away from the reserve. Walking amidst the enchanting rainforest, we will encounter remarkable tree species such as the Aleton tree, Ceiba, and the beautiful Ficus.

The forest floor will captivate us with its diverse inhabitants, including lizards, frogs, various species of ants, and rare creatures. Observing the treetops, we will be treated to the striking scenery where wildlife thrives, making it an ideal spot for bird watching. This will be a perfect opportunity to appreciate the intricate lives of insects and gain insights into the rainforest’s primary and secondary components, as well as the human impact and the rainforest’s significance for our planet. After an enriching exploration of the jungle, we will return to our lodge for a delicious lunch. Later in the day, we will explore the Amazon Jungle. If desired, a guided night walk can be arranged for those excited to further delve into the wonders of the rainforest. All meals will be provided.

DAY 4: Pantiacolla – Atalaya – Cusco.

On Day 4 of our exciting journey, we begin our return trip from our Lodge to Cusco. Get ready for an early start as we embark on a scenic river skiff ride, accompanied by an array of beautiful birds soaring above us. Keep your eyes peeled for capybaras, the world’s largest rodents, as we glide past the river banks. Our destination is Atalaya, where we’ll take a brief break to switch to our comfortable minivan before heading back to the vibrant city of Cusco. As we make our way through the enchanting cloud forest once again, we’ll pause for a delightful lunch at a scenic spot overlooking the valley. Travel Info

Essential Information for 4-Day Manu National Park Tour

Arriving in Cusco:

When visiting Cusco, it is essential to plan your travel accordingly. Currently, the Cusco airport caters only to domestic flights. International travelers must disembark in Lima and go through Customs before continuing their journey. Even if your flight to Cusco is on the same day and by the same airline, you will have to retrieve your luggage in Lima and recheck it. To access Cusco, the most recommended method of transportation is by air. Various airlines offer options for your convenience. Although LAN tends to be more expensive, it provides a greater number of flights.

However, it is important to note that flight delays or cancellations due to the high altitude of Cusco can be challenging to handle, and adverse weather conditions can halt air traffic. If you prefer land travel, buses are a reliable and comfortable option. Despite longer travel times, especially from Lima, Peruvian buses are well-maintained. This alternative is highly recommended if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco, such as Puno. Buses departing from Lima will take approximately 20 hours to reach Cusco. Please remember to provide us with your full flight details. This information is vital for a smooth and seamless experience.

Transfers in/out:

When you arrive in enchanting Cusco, our dedicated team will be eagerly awaiting you at the airport. Keep an eye out for our friendly representative, easily spotted in a sea of faces, as they will be holding a distinct white board adorned with the SPT Travel & Tours emblem. Once you have the pleasure of meeting them, they will whisk you away to your carefully selected and reserved hotel, ensuring a seamless and stress-free transfer. As the time comes for your departure, we will arrange for your pickup from your hotel a full 2 hours prior to the departure time indicated on your airline tickets.

The journey from your cozy abode to the airport usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions, ensuring a hassle-free commute. Upon arrival at the airport, kindly proceed to check-in for your flight and settle any necessary airport taxes. Sit back, relax, and allow SPT Travel & Tours to expertly handle your transfers, ensuring that your journey to and from Cusco will be filled with ease and comfort.

About the Altitude.

Altitude can have a significant impact on your body, especially when traveling to high altitudes like Cusco in Peru. At high altitudes, the air contains less oxygen, which makes your body work harder to get the oxygen it needs. To acclimate to the altitude, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any trek in the Andes. Besides taking it slow, you can drink plenty of water, try coca tea, and avoid alcohol, coffee, smoking, and sleeping pills. By following these precautions, you give your body time to adjust and lessen the chances of experiencing altitude sickness. If you experience any severe symptoms, please contact our office for assistance. Our guides are trained to help you throughout your journey.

Hotel Accommodation in Cusco.

Hotels in Cusco provide a great base to explore the ancient city and all it has to offer. Accommodation can range from budget-friendly hostel-style rooms with shared bathrooms, to luxurious 5-star properties complete with on-site spa facilities. Whatever your requirements, you are sure to find something that suits your needs in Cusco. For those looking for a unique experience, some of the city’s hotels are set in traditional colonial-style buildings dating back hundreds of years. Many have been renovated to offer comfortable and modern amenities while still retaining their historic charm.

For those looking to be close to the action, there are plenty of options near downtown Cusco, with several situated within walking distance of Plaza de Armas – the city’s main square. Alternatively, for a more tranquil and laid-back atmosphere, there are boutique hotels located on the outskirts of town with stunning views of the surrounding mountains. No matter where you stay in Cusco, you can look forward to excellent service from your hotel staff as well as easy access to all the attractions that this historic city has to offer. From local restaurants and bars to expansive markets and ancient Inca ruins, Cusco is a place where history meets modernity – making it the perfect destination for an unforgettable getaway. Make sure you book your accommodation in advance as Cusco can become quite busy during peak season.

About Weather.

The weather in Cusco can be unpredictable, with the dry season typically running from April to October. However, it’s important to note that rain can still fall in June and the sun can still rise in December. As such, it’s crucial to come prepared. Regardless of the month, make sure to bring rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Often, gloves are overlooked, but the cold and humidity can make the hike quite uncomfortable without them. Additionally, be ready for the varying seasons. Trekking in the Andes or Amamzon Jungle involves encountering different microclimates, so it’s essential to be prepared. Layers are always recommended as they allow for easy adjustment to different temperature changes. Don’t forget to pack a warm and packable padded jacket, as nights in the mountains can be chilly.

Travel insurance.

To safeguard your travel investment and ensure peace of mind throughout your journey, it is strongly advised that you acquire travel insurance. Obtaining travel insurance before embarking on your trip is both highly recommended and easily attainable. Rest assured, it provides invaluable protection in unforeseen circumstances and grants you the freedom to explore the world with confidence.

¿Is there malaria and leishmaniasis in Manu National Park? which vaccinations do I need?

Malaria risk in Manu is very low (less than 0.1%). Rather than relying on heavy malaria prophylaxis with potential side effects, it is recommended to use insect repellent, wear long sleeves, and consider bringing a standby medicine in case of infection (which can be detected through blood analysis). Treatment for the type of malaria found in the South Peruvian rainforest, called Plasmodium vivax, is completely curable.

Am I allowed to fishing inside the Manu National Park?

Fishing inside the Manu National Park is strictly prohibited to ensure the preservation of its natural resources. Only the local native communities have the privilege of fishing and hunting in authorized areas within the Park.

May I walk on my own in the paths?

No, it is not recommended for you to walk on your own along the paths. You should always stay with your guide when hiking or exploring nature trails for safety reasons. Going out onto unmarked paths can be dangerous as there may be hidden hazards such as slippery rocks, hidden branches, and sharp drop-offs that could lead to an accident—all of which may go unnoticed until it’s too late. Additionally, many plants and animals are protected in natural parks so straying off marked trails can result in fines or worse if caught walking unaware of these regulations.

Furthermore, even if you think you know the area well enough to go off-trail without a guide, doing so alone is still unadvised because accidents can happen quickly and help may not always be immediately available; it’s much safer to have someone knowledgeable with you while navigating unfamiliar terrain. Your guide will likely also offer insights into local flora and fauna which would otherwise might been missed by going solo without any additional information about the environment around them. All these concerns aside, staying together with your guide allows everyone involved to fully appreciate and enjoy the natural beauty around them—and this enhanced experience is worth far more than any perceived time savings gained from taking shortcuts!

¿Is the Manu Park open the whole year?

Yes, the Manu National Park is open the whole year! The Park is one of Peru’s largest national parks and protects 1.5 million hectares of land filled with rainforest, cloud forest, wetlands, savanna grasslands and other unique ecosystems in the eastern Andes mountains.

The best time to visit Manu National Park is from April to November during the dry season. This is when visitors have easy access by road and canoe transportation which makes entry into the park easier than at any other time. It’s also an ideal time for recreational activities like bird watching trips upriver or boating excursions downriver due to good water levels. With favorable weather conditions you can take advantage of hiking trails through many different habitats such as jungle roads full of wildlife sightings or clear Skylark paths for memorable canoe trips along rivers that are rich in flora and fauna.

However, it’s important to remember that from February to March there occurs a heavy rainy season which brings with it more difficult access by both road and air travel as well as flooding at some trails in the forest so these months might be inconvenient for exploration within this beautiful natural area. Nevertheless, those who do brave entering the park during this wet season will find themselves surrounded by incredible greenery where they can immerse themselves in thick jungles teeming with life including cats, birds, frogs and primates amongst many others species of animals found here at Manu National Park!

¿Can I store my luggage at your office?

Of course! During the 4-Day Manu National Park, your main luggage can be store in our office or at your hotel. Both of them are free.

    Responsible travel...

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

    • Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.

    • Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites during our treks contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimize our environmental footprint by using biodegradable products.
