Day 1: Trekking Inca Trail: Cusco – Chachabamba – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes Town.
Our 3-day Short Inca Trail Trek & Rainbow Mountain begins at 4:00 AM with hotel pickup in Cusco. We then proceed to the Ollantaytambo train station (2 hrs.), departing on the 6:10 AM train to Chachabamba (km104). The train offers breathtaking views of the Urubamba River, snowy mountain peaks, and cornfields. As we descend, the microclimate transitions from mountains and cornfields to lush jungle valleys with ferns, bromeliads, and orchids as the temperature rises.
The train ride takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Upon arrival, we disembark to meet the trek leader and head to the checkpoint. Shortly after, we explore the first Inca site: Chachabamba. This ancient Inca checkpoint provides an impressive introduction to the trail. Your guide will provide an informative tour of these remarkable ruins. We then embark on a three-hour hike to the most famous Inca site along the trail: Wiñay Wayna. Along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, Machu Picchu, and the Urubamba River/Valley.

The trail features flat stretches, as well as uphill and downhill sections with arranged steps, some of which may be narrow but not dangerous. Upon arriving at Wiñay Wayna, your guide will lead a tour of the site. You’ll have time to explore the temples, waterfalls, gardens, warehouses, watchtowers, and agricultural terraces.
Afterward, we head to the lunch spot. Following lunch, you’ll have a short rest or use the restroom facilities. We then hike for approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes, gradually ascending to reach the Sun Gate. From here, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding mountains. The Sun Gate, used by the Incas to observe the sunrise over Machu Picchu during the summer solstice (December 22nd), marks the final leg of the journey to the Inca site itself. It is another hour’s walk to reach Machu Picchu. Once there, you can explore the watchtower area and capture beautiful photos of Machu Picchu without the crowds. Afterward, we take a half-hour bus ride to the town of Aguas Calientes for hotel accommodation. Later, you can enjoy dinner with your leader and then explore the town or return to your hotel.

About the Altitude.
Altitude sickness is a concern when traveling to high-altitude destinations like Peru, particularly Cusco. The air at higher altitudes has less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. It’s normal to experience flu-like symptoms or hangover-like effects when dealing with altitude sickness, such as headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and trouble sleeping. If any of these symptoms become severe, please contact our office, and we’ll assist you with obtaining medical attention.
To mitigate altitude sickness, it’s recommended to start your activities slowly to give your body time to adjust. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids like water or coca tea (available in the hotel). Coca tea has been used for centuries to prevent altitude sickness, as the alkaloids in coca leaves help transport oxygen to the blood, protecting your body from the effects of high altitude. Avoid alcohol, coffee, smoking, and sleeping pills, as they can dehydrate you, hinder oxygen absorption, or disrupt breathing patterns.
Your healthcare provider may prescribe medications like acetazolamide and dexamethasone to prevent altitude sickness. It’s usually advised to start taking the medication two days before reaching high altitude and continue throughout your stay.[/su_spoiler]
