Experience the wonders of this breathtaking region as you immerse yourself in its rich history and awe-inspiring landscapes. Our tour begins with a visit to the vibrant Indian market in Pisac, the perfect place to find unique and meaningful gifts. Prepare to be captivated by the magnificent Inca town of Ollantaytambo, nestled amidst the majestic mountains that grace the Sacred Valley. Rest and rejuvenate at a charming hotel in Ollantaytambo, as you prepare for your upcoming adventure on the Inca Trail.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas, also known as Urubamba Valley, is a haven of natural beauty located in close proximity to the city of Cusco. This valley was an integral center of agriculture and home to picturesque towns during the Inca era. Our tour commences at 08:30 a.m as we pick you up from your hotel and embark on a mesmerizing journey through this remarkable valley, which served as a vital source of sustenance for the Incas.

Immerse yourself in the lush agricultural region of the Sacred Valley, where the city of Cusco continues to be supplied with an abundance of fresh produce, particularly corn and vegetables. Prepare to be amazed as we explore the extraordinary ruins of Pisac, a testament to the Inca civilization, and indulge in the vibrant colors and craftsmanship of the local artisan market, where you can acquire unique handicrafts directly from the talented producers.

Days 3,4,5 and 6: Hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.

Embark on an incredible journey by hiking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. After an early breakfast, we’ll take a scenic bus ride for one hour to Km 82 or Pisqhakuchu, the starting point of our adventure. As we arrive, we’ll meet our team of skilled porters and chef. With your passport in hand, we’ll head to the check point and begin our trek. The majority of the gear will be carried by the porters, allowing you to enjoy the hike with a small daypack containing essentials like water, rain gear, snacks, and a camera.

The Inca Trail spans 45km, and each person can set their own pace. The second day presents the most challenging section as we conquer the highest point known as Dead Woman’s Pass, reaching an elevation of 4,200 masl. On the third day, we’ll immerse ourselves in the beauty of the trail, encountering a variety of landscapes and numerous Inca ruins to explore. On the final day, we’ll rise early to witness the breathtaking sunrise at Machu Picchu and explore the awe-inspiring ruins before the crowds arrive from Cusco.

Throughout the Inca Trail, we’ll encounter several small Inca ruins, starting with Llactapata, an impressive site featuring magnificent terraces and an advanced irrigation system. At Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass, which stands at an elevation of 4,200 masl, we’ll face a challenging climb. From the second pass, positioned at 4,000 masl, you’ll be treated to spectacular vistas on clear days, offering an incredible view of the snow-capped Vilcabamba Mountain Range, including the towering Salkantay Mountain (6,271 masl), as well as a glimpse of the previous Dead Woman’s Pass.

The trail takes you through enchanting cloud forests on a gentle climb to the third pass (3,600 masl), where you’ll venture through an ancient and well-preserved Inca trail. As you journey, you’ll pass through a tunnel carved by the Incas. From the third pass, a descent awaits, consisting of 3,200 steps leading to the WiñayWayna (Young Forever – 2,600 masl) camp. The campsite boasts a magnificent Inca ruin, featuring grandiose terraced hillsides and panoramic views of the valley below.

On the final day of the trek, we’ll ascend the steps to Inti Punku, also known as the Sungate, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding peaks and the majestic sight of Machu Picchu below. From there, we’ll continue our descent to Machu Picchu, a journey of approximately 45 minutes, before embarking on a guided tour of this awe-inspiring ancient city.

For centuries, the local Quechua farmers were aware of Machu Picchu’s presence, but it wasn’t until July 24, 1911, when the American historian Hiram Bingham, who was in search of Vilcabamba, arrived at the site. At that time, Machu Picchu lay hidden beneath thick vegetation. Bingham and his team dedicated themselves to clearing the growth in 1912 and 1915, allowing the rest of the world to discover its existence. Over the years, extensive work has been conducted to excavate and study this remarkable archaeological site.

NOTE:

For those who are eager to embark on the adventure of trekking the Inca Trail, you will spend two thrilling days hiking through breathtaking landscapes, lush forests, and diverse biodiversity. Afterward, you will journey by train to the charming town of “Aguas Calientes” for an overnight stay. Packing List

Your Packaging List

What you should bring will vary depending on the travel style you have chosen and when you travel. We recommend that you pack your luggage as light as possible, making sure that you can carry and lift your own luggage and walk with it short distances or go up or down stairs. Help will be available in most places, but there may be times when you need to manage your own luggage, for example at airports and train stations.

A lockable suitcase on wheels is ideal for this trip. It is recommended to keep the weight of your main luggage around 15 kg and certainly no more than 20 kg. A small to medium sized backpack (45-50 liters) is another good option.

You will also need a small backpack (30lts.) to carry water, a camera, a jacket, etc. when you explore during the day. Below is a link to our ultimate packing list, a guide to get started:

Travel documents

  • Passport
  • Visa if necessary
  • Travel insurance policy
  • 24-hour emergency travel insurance policy and contact number
  • Electronic airline tickets
  • Your travel itinerary
  • Photocopies of important documents
  • An impression of the essential information about your trip’s journey.
  • Replacement passport photos
  • Youth / Student / Senior Cards for Travel Discounts
  • International driver’s license if required
  • Cash / Credit Cards
  • $ 500 cash contingency fund
  • Belt or bag

Luggage

On the vast majority of our trips, you must bring your own luggage. Most travelers use a small suitcase on wheels, although the most suitable type of luggage will vary depending on the trip and destination.

  • Main luggage
  • Day pack
  • Padlocks and keys
  • Personal stuff
  • First aid kit
  • Medications / personal prescriptions

The Packing List:

After asking to our customers who have been traveling around Cusco & Machu Picchu we have come up with our definitive list of what to pack for a trip to lima, Arequipa, Puno, Cusco and Machu Picchu.

  • A GOOD PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS OR WALKING SHOES.- This is not the place to bring those high heels ladies! Steps and uneven cobble stone surfaces abound and if it rains the stones can get slippery.
  • A PONCHO FOR THOSE DOWNPOURS.- The weather changes very quickly here. An ideal solution is to carry a good quality poncho in your daypack at all times particularly during the rainy season from November / March. (You can buy ponchos in any of the tourist shops in Cusco but the quality isn’t always great.)
  • A WARM JACKET.- Evenings and mornings can be very cold particularly between June – September so a good quality, waterproof and ideally windproof jacket is ideal. Another good option is a warm fleece which you can wear under a light-weight waterproof, windproof jacket.
  • GOOD QUALITY SUNSCREEN AND A SUNHAT.- Due to the altitude and Peru’s location close to the Equator frequent application of sunscreen is advised to avoid any nasty sunburn. Be warned, even when it’s cloudy here you can get very burnt.
  • BRING CLOTHES THAT YOU CAN LAYER.- Cool mornings mean you may want to wrap up as you set off for a day’s exploring, however by 11am you might want to strip down to a t-shirt and shorts.  Warm layers and trousers that can be unzipped into shorts are great. You will only need a couple of changes of clothes as you can get washing done anywhere cheaply.
  • A DAY-PACK TO CARRY ALL YOUR BITS AND PIECES.- ideally with a hip strap to make long days hiking and exploring more comfortable.
  • A WATER BOTTLE.- Plastic disposal is a real problem in the Sacred Valley so we recommend you buy large bottles and refill water into your own re-useable bottle.
  • SMALL FIRST AID KIT FOR BASIC CUTS AND BRUISES AND TUMMY UPSETS.- Pharmacies abound in Cusco and other small towns in the Sacred Valley where you can buy basic first aid and medical supplies. Do make sure however, that you bring enough of any prescription medicine you might need as some brands and types of medicine might not be available in Peru. A good rule of thumb is to bring enough prescription medicine to cover you for the length of your trip plus an extra week in case you get delayed.
  • A spare pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses plus a copy of your prescription is a good idea.
  • A SMALL POCKET SIZE TORCH.
  • Earplugs for when you are stuck in a noisy room or want to sleep on the bus or plane.
  • A DUCKPACK.- or rainproof covering for your daypack or backpack is a must particularly if you are travelling during the rainy season to avoid wet clothes and personal items. This is particularly important if you are going to be doing any multi-day hiking including the Inca Trail.
  • A HAT, SCARF AND GLOVES FOR THOSE COLD MORNINGS AND EVENINGS.- You can buy fabulous Peruvian style hats and gloves at the local markets so don’t worry if you forget to bring these with you.
  • PACK YOUR TOILETRIES IN ZIP LOCK BAGS.- For some reason the altitude can cause shampoo and other bottles to pop leaving a nasty mess in your bag, Pack all toiletries in sealed bags to avoid any unnecessary mess.
  • INSECT REPELLENT.- particularly if you plan on going trekking or visiting Machu Picchu.
  • CAMERA.- with lots of memory and battery for all those great shots you are definitely going to want to take.
  • Take enough padlocks for every double zipper to stop wandering hands and lock up your important belongings, even in your hotel room.

Essential Info.

ESSENTIAL TOUR INFO ABOUT 10-DAY SUNRISE PERU TOUR:

Arriving in Cusco.

When arriving in Cusco for the 10-day Sunrise Peru Tour, you have a couple of options. If you are flying in, please note that the Cusco airport currently only serves domestic flights. If you’re coming from an international destination, you’ll need to disembark in Lima and clear Customs before continuing to Cusco. Even if you have a connecting flight to Cusco on the same day and with the same airline, you’ll still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and then check them in again.

Air travel is generally recommended as the best transportation option to Cusco. LAN is one of the popular airlines, but it may be more expensive. Keep in mind that flight delays or cancellations can occur due to the high-altitude weather conditions in Cusco, causing temporary air traffic halts. Alternatively, bus travel is available and can be a good option, especially if you’re coming from a city closer to Cusco, like Puno. Buses in Peru are well maintained and comfortable, although the journey from Lima can be quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.

About Transfers: in/out.

Upon your arrival in Cusco, our dedicated team will be eagerly awaiting you at the airport. Just keep an eye out for our representative holding a white board adorned with the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrival terminal. Once you connect with them, they will take care of your transfer, ensuring a seamless journey to your prearranged hotel.

For your return transfer, we will arrange for a timely pick-up from your hotel, ensuring you have ample time before your flight. Typically, the drive from your hotel to the airport takes around 20-30 minutes, but do keep in mind that traffic conditions may affect this duration. Upon arrival at the airport, kindly proceed to check your flights and settle the necessary airport taxes.

Rest assured, with our comprehensive transfer services, your journey to and from the airport will be hassle-free and convenient.

The Altitude sickness?.

Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially in Cusco. At higher altitudes, the air has less oxygen, causing your body to work harder. To help your body adjust, spend at least two days in Cusco before starting any Andes trek. Embrace the vibrant city and explore while acclimating.

Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Common effects include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising. If you experience severe symptoms, please contact our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor.

In most cases, the symptoms are mild. Take it easy at first and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or coca tea. Coca tea has traditionally been used to combat altitude sickness. Its alkaloids help oxygenate your blood, reducing the impact of altitude sickness. Limit alcohol and coffee consumption, as they increase urination and dehydration. Avoid smoking, as it hampers oxygen absorption. Lastly, refrain from using sleeping pills, as they can affect your breathing during sleep.

About Weather.

The weather in Cusco can be unpredictable, with the dry season generally running from April to October. However, even during this period, rain can still occur in June, and the sun can still shine in December. It is important to be prepared for all weather conditions. Regardless of the month, it is necessary to have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. People often overlook the need for gloves, but the cold and humidity can make the hike very uncomfortable. Additionally, be prepared for various microclimates while trekking in the Andes. Layering is essential for easily adjusting to temperature changes. It is recommended to bring a warm and packable padded jacket for the cold nights.

Guaranteed Departures.

All departure dates for our 10-day Sunrise Peru Tour are 100% guaranteed. Once you’ve booked and paid your deposit, you’re all set. No need to worry about cancellations due to insufficient group sizes or any last-minute changes. With our guaranteed departures, you can confidently plan your travel adventures, knowing that your trip is secure. Start your adventure the moment you book with us.

food and accommodation.

For food and accommodation, we prioritize your satisfaction and strive to provide the best arrangements possible. We secure tourist standard hotels in Cusco and Ollantaytambo, where you’ll be staying before and after your trek. Typically, the rooms are shared with another member of your group, but it depends on your group size and room availability.

If requested, we can arrange triple share accommodation, and single supplement rooms are available for an additional charge. During the trek, we provide comfortable camping tents for your stay. While shower facilities may be limited, we can arrange hot water using buckets at each campsite. Throughout the entire trek, you’ll enjoy a full board meal plan, including breakfast, lunch, dinner, and tea/coffee.

Travel insurance.

When it comes to travel, protecting your investment is crucial. That’s where travel insurance comes in. It offers coverage for unforeseen situations that may occur before or during your trip. From trip cancellation and interruption to medical emergencies and baggage loss, travel insurance can save you from facing significant financial losses. The best part is, getting travel insurance is quick and easy and can be done from the comfort of your own home. So, make sure to add travel insurance to your checklist and explore the world with peace of mind.
