This remarkable site was the source of the stones used in building the majestic Ollantaytambo. You’ll walk among the remnants of Inca engineering – huge half-carved stones that sit silently, telling tales of ancient ambitions and incredible craftsmanship. This area isn’t just about the stone work; it’s also home to preserved Inca mummies and their burial sites, known as Chullpas, offering a unique glimpse into the customs and rituals of the Inca civilization.

Starting from the quarry, we’ll follow the original Inca trail down to Ollantaytambo. This three-hour descent takes us along the same path that the Incas used to transport stones for their monumental building efforts. Arriving in Ollantaytambo marks not just the end of our descent, but also the last meal prepared by our chef – a moment to savor the flavors that have accompanied us on our trek. But your exploration doesn’t end there. You’ll have free time to wander the cobbled streets of this ancient town. It’s a perfect way to conclude your day – from exploring historical heights to enjoying the lively local culture at ground level.

Your night will be spent in the comfort of a local hotel, giving you time to rest and reflect on the day’s rich experiences. Essential Information About the 5-Day Inca Quarry Trek & Short Inca Trail:

The 5-day Inca Quarry Trek combined with the Short Inca Trail is an immersive experience designed for adventurers who wish to explore unique Incan ruins and enjoy breathtaking natural landscapes while also experiencing a part of the classic Inca Trail. The trek is moderately challenging, making it suitable for fit individuals with a spirit for adventure. Trekking days span between 5 to 7 hours of walking, so preparation in terms of stamina and physical fitness is crucial.

Along the way, you will be accompanied by experienced guides, a chef preparing local gourmet meals, and porters to carry the camping gear. The maximum altitude reached during this trek is 4,450 meters (14,600 ft) above sea level, so acclimatization to high altitude in Cusco at least two days before the trek is highly recommended.

The trek’s highlight is a visit to the stunning Machu Picchu on the last day, with an early morning entry to witness the sunrise over this world wonder. This package includes all necessary permits for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu, along with accommodation in comfortable tents and a final night in a hotel near Machu Picchu.

ABOUT BRIEFING

For your Inca Quarry Trek briefing, it will occur one day prior to the hike. The location, either at your hotel or our offices, is dependent on the confirmation email you will receive. Scheduled for 6:30 p.m., this session is a crucial opportunity to address any issues and queries you may have. Your guide will also confirm that you possess the correct gear for the journey, ensuring you are fully prepared for the adventures ahead.

WHAT TO DO IN CUSCO

Upon your entrance to Cusco (3,033m / 11,154ft), it is paramount to allow the body to accustom itself to the elevated heights of the area. We encourage travelling visitors to consider shorter trips such as Cusco City Tour and Sacred Valley Tour prior to any extended journey such as Machu Picchu and Choquequirao. By doing this, you can reduce your risk of altitude sickness. Should you have already penciled in a tour like Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake, we suggest making them last on your list.

WEATHER IN CUSCO?

The area of Cusco has two potential seasons: the wet season from November to March and the arid season from April to October. Still, weather in the Andes is unpredictable so it’s always a good idea to bring rain protection with you, just in case you experience warmer days. At “Sunrise Peru Trek”, we guarantee an unforgettable encounter no matter what nature throws at you. It is almost impossible to be exact about the climate in Peru. During the rainy season it may be bright and pleasant while during arid periods there could be hail – still one of the charms of Peru.

DIFFICULTY OF TREK:

The Inca Quarry Trek, including the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, is classified as a moderate to challenging hike. Despite the breathtaking views and unparalleled access to Incan ruins, trekkers should be in good physical condition to undertake this adventure. The trail encompasses steep ascents and descents, with the highest point reaching 4,450 meters (14,600 feet) above sea level. The effects of altitude can make these treks more demanding than the same effort at lower elevations. Prior training, such as regular hiking or aerobic activity, is strongly recommended to ensure an enjoyable and successful experience.

MEALS:

the Meals during the Inca Quarry Trek & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu are designed to fuel your adventurous spirit. Our experienced chefs prepare a diverse range of delicious and nutritious dishes that cater to various dietary needs. A typical day starts with a hearty breakfast, ensuring you have the energy for the day’s hike. During the trek, you’ll stop for lunch at a scenic spot, where you can soak in the stunning views while indulging in a multi-tiered meal of local Andean specialties. Dinner is a relaxing affair, giving you time to rest and reflect on the day’s accomplishments while savoring a sumptuous fusion of traditional Peruvian flavors with modern culinary techniques. With plenty of snacks and hydration breaks throughout the day, you can stay energized and hydrated throughout the trek.

DIETARY NEEDS:

We understand that everyone has different dietary needs and restrictions. Our chefs are happy to accommodate any dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, or any allergies. All meals are prepared with fresh ingredients from local markets, ensuring not only a delicious taste but also supporting the local economy. It’s important to let us know about your dietary needs in advance, so we can make all necessary arrangements and ensure you have a worry-free dining experience during the trek.

PREPARATION:

Before setting out on the Inca Quarry Trek & Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, it’s essential to be physically and mentally prepared. We recommend incorporating regular cardiovascular exercise and strength training into your routine several months prior to your trek. Familiarize yourself with hiking at elevation, if possible, to acclimate your body to the demands of the high Andean altitudes. Additionally, ensure your hiking gear is well-suited and comfortable for long days of trekking. Items such as a good pair of hiking boots, moisture-wicking clothing, a sturdy backpack, and sun protection are indispensable. Don’t forget to also prepare for varying weather conditions; layers are key. Finally, reviewing the itinerary and understanding the cultural significance of the places you will visit will greatly enhance your appreciation and experience of the trek.

HORSES INCLUDED:

Our camping excursions come with horses and horsemen that are in charge of setting up and transporting all gear. They will also be lugging the duffel bag that you received at the briefing held prior to your Inca Quarry Trek. Each individual travel bag must not exceed 7 kg / 14 lbs and should contain both your sleeping bag and air mattress. This inclusion not only eases the physical burden on trekkers but also provides a unique opportunity to interact with these magnificent animals, enhancing your connection to the traditional methods of travel in the region.

ABOUT DUFFEL BAG:

On the night preceding the hike, you will be provided with a duffle bag of limited size in which you can load your clothes for the duration of the hike. The maximum weight allowable for this bag is 7 kg (15.4 lbs). The horsemen will be responsible for transporting your duffle bag from one site to another, while different horses will carry food and camping equipment. It’s important to note that you won’t be able to access the items in your duffle bag during the day, as the horsemen and horses typically move ahead of the group, making the bags accessible only at the end of each day’s route.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:

To protect your investment in travel, we strongly recommend that you purchase travel insurance. It is highly recommended and it is very easy to obtain travel insurance before leaving home. This insurance can cover you for a wide range of situations, including trip cancellation, medical emergencies, lost or stolen luggage, and more. Ensuring you have travel insurance can provide peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy your adventure without worrying about the unexpected.
