Day 1.- Arrival to Cusco & Explore the city.

Upon your arrival in Cusco for the “Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure” tour, we kindly request your flight details so that we can arrange for your reception and transfer to the designated hotel. A comprehensive briefing about the city and the trip will be provided. This day is free for you to explore the city at your leisure. It is recommended to acclimate gradually to the altitude by taking it easy and enjoying the charming colonial town, filled with ancient ruins, cobble-stoned streets, museums, churches, and a vibrant atmosphere.

Day 2.- Sacred Valley of the Incas: Cusco – Pisaq – Ollantyatmbo.

Explore the captivating Sacred Valley of the Incas on our informative and awe-inspiring tour. Departing from your hotel at 07:30 a.m, we embark on a journey to this stunning valley, which served as a vital source of sustenance for the Inca civilization.

Also known as the Urubamba Valley, the Sacred Valley is a verdant agricultural region that continues to supply Cusco with an abundance of produce, including corn and vegetables. Just a short 5-minute walk from the hotel, we’ll reach the bus station and embark on a picturesque 25-minute bus ride. Once you’re done capturing the perfect shot, our knowledgeable guide will take you on an informative tour that lasts approximately 2-3 hours. In the afternoon, between 3-4 pm, we’ll board the train for a scenic journey back to the Ollantaytambo train station. From there, you’ll be transferred to your hotel in Cusco, arriving at approximately 7-8 pm. 

Days 4, 5.- Amazon Jungle Tour.

After a delightful breakfast, a quick transfer from Cusco airport will take you to Puerto Maldonado, nestled deep in the lowlands. Upon arrival, we’ll explore the city before embarking on a thrilling motorized canoe journey to our lodge, situated near the remarkable “Madre de Dios River.” Home to an astonishing variety of bird species, this region boasts the world record for the highest number of bird sightings in one area. Throughout our adventure, knowledgeable local guides will lead us on enchanting jungle explorations.

Located in Southeastern Peru, Puerto Maldonado occupies a significant position in the Amazon forest, merely 55 kilometers (34 miles) west of Bolivia. While 60% of Peru lies within the Amazon Basin, much of it eludes the casual traveler’s grasp due to its remote nature. Puerto Maldonado, as the region’s principal city, offers air services from both the capital and Cusco.

Arriving in Cusco.

Arriving in Cusco for 6-Day Machu Picchu Amazon Adventure, can be done through the Cusco airport, but please note that it currently only serves domestic flights. If you are coming from an international destination, you will need to disembark in Lima and clear Customs before continuing to Cusco. It’s important to remember that even if you have a connecting flight to Cusco on the same day and with the same airline, you will still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and then check them in again.

For transportation to Cusco, air travel is recommended as the best option. There are several airlines to choose from, with LAN being one of the popular but more expensive choices. It’s worth noting that flight delays or cancellations can occur due to the high altitude weather conditions in Cusco. In such cases, air traffic may be temporarily halted. Alternatively, bus travel is available and can be a good option, especially if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco like Puno. Buses in Peru are well maintained and comfortable, although the journey from Lima can be quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.

Transfers in/out.

When you reach Cusco, our team will be waiting for you at the airport. Look for our representative with a white board displaying the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrival terminal. Once you meet them, they will transfer you to your reserved hotel.

For the return transfer, we will pick you up from your hotel 2 hours before the time specified in your airline tickets. The drive from your hotel to the airport typically takes around 20-30 minutes, but may vary due to traffic conditions. Once at the airport, you will need to check your flights and settle the airport taxes.

About the Altitude.

Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially Cusco. The air at higher altitudes has less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. To help your body adjust, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any Andes trek. Cusco is a vibrant city with plenty to explore, so you won’t run out of things to do while acclimating.

Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising are some common effects. If you experience any severe symptoms, please get in touch with our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor.

In most cases, these symptoms will be mild. To ease your adjustment, start your activities slowly and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or coca tea. Coca tea has been traditionally used to combat altitude sickness. The alkaloids in coca leaves help oxygenate your blood, reducing the effects of altitude sickness. It is advisable to limit your consumption of alcohol and coffee as they can increase urination and dehydration. Smoking should also be avoided as it hampers your body’s oxygen absorption. Lastly, refrain from taking sleeping pills, as they can cause shallow breathing, hindering your body’s ability to absorb oxygen during sleep.

The weather in Cusco is unpredictable. The dry season typically runs from April to October, but rain can still fall in June and the sun can still rise in December. It’s important to be prepared for any weather conditions. Regardless of the month, make sure to have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. Many people overlook the need for gloves, but the cold and humidity can make the hike very uncomfortable. Additionally, be prepared for various microclimates during trekking in the Andes. Layering is essential to easily adjust to temperature changes. It’s recommended to bring a warm and packable padded jacket for the cold nights.
