Lima, known as the city of the kings during the 16th and 17th centuries, has a rich heritage of archaeology, history, and culture. Despite its hidden treasures, Lima is a captivating destination, offering a fascinating glimpse into South America. As the capital and largest city of Peru, Lima is located in the coastal valleys of Rimac and Lurin, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Founded by Spanish “Conquistadores” on January 18, 1535, as the city of the kings (“Ciudad de los Reyes”), Lima became the capital of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru. Today, Lima remains a vibrant hub, home to one of the oldest higher learning institutions in the New World.

Day 2:  flight from Lima to Arequipa and City tour:

After breakfast, we’ll depart from the hotel to the airport for a 45-minute flight to Arequipa. Upon arrival, our staff will meet you at the airport and transfer you to our hotel. In the afternoon, prepare to embark on our guided city tour.

The tour spans approximately 4 hours and includes a combination of driving and walking through the historic center of Arequipa. Along this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to visit prominent attractions such as Yanahuara Mirador, Arequipa’s Main Square, “Mirador de Carmen Alto,” “Plaza Mayor,” the impressive Cathedral of Arequipa, and more.

Arequipa, commonly referred to as the White City, is not only the capital and largest city of the Province of Arequipa but also serves as the seat of the Constitutional Court. Being the second most populous city in Peru, Arequipa holds significant commercial and industrial importance. Its rich history dates back to the 15th of August, 1540, when it was founded by Marquis Don Francisco Pizarro with the name of “Villa Hermosa de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción.”

Join us on this extraordinary tour that combines historical exploration and stunning sights in the fascinating city of Arequipa.

You can also see the Dead Woman’s Pass from here.

After the second pass, the trail goes through a beautiful cloud forest as we make a gentle climb towards the third pass at 3,600 masl. Along this part of the trail, you’ll hike through a well-preserved and original Inca trail, passing through a tunnel carved by the Incas. From the third pass, you’ll start a long descent of 3,200 steps until reaching WiñayWayna (Young Forever) camp at 2,600 masl. The campsite boasts magnificent Inca ruins with a grand terraced hillside site and panoramic views of the valley below.

On the final day of the hike, we’ll climb the steps to Inti Punku, also known as the Sungate, which overlooks the peaks surrounding Machu Picchu. During clear mornings, you can catch a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu below. From there, it’s a 45-minute descent to Machu Picchu to begin the tour of this remarkable archaeological site.

Packing List

RECOMMENDED THINGS TO TAKE

First on your packing list for your trip to Cusco should be an open mind and a sense of humour!  Don’t come with too many preconceived ideas about what Peru is like, this way your trip will open you up to incredible new horizons and possibilities.

Bring as little as possible. Don’t worry, if you forget something, you can probably buy it in Cusco once you arrive. Tourist shops abound selling a whole range of items from water bottles and first aid kits to hiking gear. You can also rent hiking equipment in Cusco, which can be a good option if you don’t want to travel to Peru with a whole lot of heavy hiking and camping gear.Cusco, Inca Trail to Machu Picchu and Puerto Maldonado Packing List:
After asking to our customers who have been traveling around Cusco & Machu Picchu we have come up with our definitive list of what to

Packing list for 16-day Paru Tour

  • A GOOD PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS OR WALKING SHOES.- This is not the place to bring those high heels ladies! Steps and uneven cobble stone surfaces abound and if it rains the stones can get slippery.
  • A PONCHO FOR THOSE DOWNPOURS.- The weather changes very quickly here. An ideal solution is to carry a good quality poncho in your daypack at all times particularly during the rainy season from November / March. (You can buy ponchos in any of the tourist shops in Cusco but the quality isn’t always great.)
  • A WARM JACKET.- Evenings and mornings can be very cold particularly between June – September so a good quality, waterproof and ideally windproof jacket is ideal. Another good option is a warm fleece which you can wear under a light-weight waterproof, windproof jacket.
  • GOOD QUALITY SUNSCREEN AND A SUNHAT.- Due to the altitude and Peru’s location close to the Equator frequent application of sunscreen is advised to avoid any nasty sunburn. Be warned, even when it’s cloudy here you can get very burnt.
  • BRING CLOTHES THAT YOU CAN LAYER.- Cool mornings mean you may want to wrap up as you set off for a day’s exploring, however by 11am you might want to strip down to a t-shirt and shorts.  Warm layers and trousers that can be unzipped into shorts are great. You will only need a couple of changes of clothes as you can get washing done anywhere cheaply.
  • A DAY-PACK TO CARRY ALL YOUR BITS AND PIECES.- ideally with a hip strap to make long days hiking and exploring more comfortable.
  • A WATER BOTTLE.- Plastic disposal is a real problem in the Sacred Valley so we recommend you buy large bottles and refill water into your own re-useable bottle.
  • SMALL FIRST AID KIT FOR BASIC CUTS AND BRUISES AND TUMMY UPSETS.- Pharmacies abound in Cusco and other small towns in the Sacred Valley where you can buy basic first aid and medical supplies. Do make sure however, that you bring enough of any prescription medicine you might need as some brands and types of medicine might not be available in Peru. A good rule of thumb is to bring enough prescription medicine to cover you for the length of your trip plus an extra week in case you get delayed.
  • A spare pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses plus a copy of your prescription is a good idea.
  • A SMALL POCKET SIZE TORCH.
  • Earplugs for when you are stuck in a noisy room or want to sleep on the bus or plane.
  • A DUCKPACK.- or rainproof covering for your daypack or backpack is a must particularly if you are travelling during the rainy season to avoid wet clothes and personal items. This is particularly important if you are going to be doing any multi-day hiking including the Inca Trail.
  • A HAT, SCARF AND GLOVES FOR THOSE COLD MORNINGS AND EVENINGS.- You can buy fabulous Peruvian style hats and gloves at the local markets so don’t worry if you forget to bring these with you.
  • PACK YOUR TOILETRIES IN ZIP LOCK BAGS.- For some reason the altitude can cause shampoo and other bottles to pop leaving a nasty mess in your bag, Pack all toiletries in sealed bags to avoid any unnecessary mess.
  • INSECT REPELLENT.- particularly if you plan on going trekking or visiting Machu Picchu.
  • CAMERA.- with lots of memory and battery for all those great shots you are definitely going to want to take.
  • Take enough padlocks for every double zipper to stop wandering hands and lock up your important belongings, even in your hotel room.

Packing Essentials for Peru Tour

  • Passport with minimum 6 month validity left.
  • Photocopies of important documents like passport and tickets. Keep these separate from the originals.
  • Travel insurance. Get a quote for travel insurance with our travel insurance partners World Nomads.
  • Details of your next of kin.
  • Prescriptions for any medication you require. Most chemists will sell medicine over the counter without a prescription, but if you are searched by immigration it’s good to be able to show you require what you’re carrying.

Essential Info.

ESSENTIAL TOUR INFO ABOUT 16-DAY PERU TOUR:

Arriving in Cusco.

When arriving in Cusco for the 16-day Peru Tour, you have a couple of options. If you are flying in, please note that the Cusco airport currently only serves domestic flights. If you’re coming from an international destination, you’ll need to disembark in Lima and clear Customs before continuing to Cusco. Even if you have a connecting flight to Cusco on the same day and with the same airline, you’ll still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and then check them in again.

Air travel is generally recommended as the best transportation option to Cusco. LAN is one of the popular airlines, but it may be more expensive. Keep in mind that flight delays or cancellations can occur due to the high-altitude weather conditions in Cusco, causing temporary air traffic halts. Alternatively, bus travel is available and can be a good option, especially if you’re coming from a city closer to Cusco, like Puno. Buses in Peru are well maintained and comfortable, although the journey from Lima can be quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.

About Transfers: in/out.

Upon your arrival in Cusco, our dedicated team will be eagerly awaiting you at the airport. Just keep an eye out for our representative holding a white board adorned with the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrival terminal. Once you connect with them, they will take care of your transfer, ensuring a seamless journey to your prearranged hotel.

For your return transfer, we will arrange for a timely pick-up from your hotel, ensuring you have ample time before your flight. Typically, the drive from your hotel to the airport takes around 20-30 minutes, but do keep in mind that traffic conditions may affect this duration. Upon arrival at the airport, kindly proceed to check your flights and settle the necessary airport taxes.

Rest assured, with our comprehensive transfer services, your journey to and from the airport will be hassle-free and convenient.

The Altitude sickness?.

Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially in Cusco. At higher altitudes, the air has less oxygen, causing your body to work harder. To help your body adjust, spend at least two days in Cusco before starting any Andes trek. Embrace the vibrant city and explore while acclimating.

Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Common effects include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising. If you experience severe symptoms, please contact our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor.

In most cases, the symptoms are mild. Take it easy at first and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or coca tea. Coca tea has traditionally been used to combat altitude sickness. Its alkaloids help oxygenate your blood, reducing the impact of altitude sickness. Limit alcohol and coffee consumption, as they increase urination and dehydration. Avoid smoking, as it hampers oxygen absorption. Lastly, refrain from using sleeping pills, as they can affect your breathing during sleep.

About Weather.

The weather in Cusco can be unpredictable, with the dry season generally running from April to October. However, even during this period, rain can still occur in June, and the sun can still shine in December. It is important to be prepared for all weather conditions. Regardless of the month, it is necessary to have rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, poncho, and waterproof gloves. People often overlook the need for gloves, but the cold and humidity can make the hike very uncomfortable. Additionally, be prepared for various microclimates while trekking in the Andes. Layering is essential for easily adjusting to temperature changes. It is recommended to bring a warm and packable padded jacket for the cold nights.

While shower facilities may be limited, we can arrange hot water using buckets at each campsite.
