While the altitude can be challenging, the stunning vistas and rich cultural heritage encountered along the trail make every step worthwhile.

PREPARATION:

When preparing for the trekking Pumamarka to Ollantaytambo, it’s crucial to take into account the altitude, the physical demands of the trail, and the local weather conditions. Ensure you’re well-equipped with hiking gear, including sturdy walking boots, breathable clothing, and a reliable backpack. Additionally, pack enough water, high-energy snacks, and sunscreen. It’s also advisable to spend a few days acclimating to the altitude in Cusco or another high-altitude location prior to starting the trek. Always remember, your safety and health should be your top priority.

ALTITUDE PROBLEMS:

High altitude can pose a significant challenge for trekkers. As you ascend, the air becomes thinner and your body must work harder to obtain the oxygen it needs. This can lead to altitude sickness, characterized by symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, and shortness of breath. Severe cases can progress to High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High-Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), both of which are potentially life threatening. To avoid altitude sickness, it’s essential to ascend slowly, allowing your body time to acclimatize. If symptoms persist, descending to a lower altitude is the best course of action. Always consult with your doctor before embarking on any high-altitude trek to discuss potential risks and preventative measures.

BEST TIME TO TREKKING

The best time to trekking Pumamarka to Ollantaytambo is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During these months, the skies are generally clear, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscapes. Daytime temperatures are comfortable for hiking, although it can become quite cold at night. Keep in mind that this is also the peak tourist season, so the trails could be busier. However, the tranquility and beauty of the Inca trail during the dry season more than make up for the crowds. Always check local weather forecasts before setting out, as conditions can change rapidly in the mountains.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:

Travel insurance is an essential aspect of planning any adventure, especially when embarking on a trekking route like the Trekking Pumamarca to Ollantaytambo. It typically covers unexpected costs like emergency medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost luggage, and other unforeseen losses incurred while traveling. The terraces served a dual purpose: increasing cultivable land and preventing soil erosion, reflecting the Incas’ advanced agricultural and environmental knowledge. Moreover, the presence of residential and ceremonial structures suggests it was a thriving community. Despite the passage of time and the lack of comprehensive historical records, Pumamarka stands as a testament to the Inca’s architectural prowess and their deep connection with nature.
