Packing List

What to bring for 6-day Classic Peru Tour & Machu Picchu

To ensure you have everything you need, here’s a detailed list to assist you when packing for your 6-day Classic Peru Tour & Machu Picchu:

Suggested items to pack:

  • A backpack: This is an essential item for your journey. When purchasing a backpack, make sure it has strong straps, as this will help to spread the weight evenly.
  • Passport: You will need to show your passport to access to Machu Picchu.
  • Reusable water bottle: The recommended amount to consume is one or two litres per day.
  • Hiking boots: At first glance, a sturdy pair of hiking boots might seem like a large investment, but you won’t regret the purchase once you’re on the trail, as hiking boots are designed for comfort. If you are purchasing a new pair, make sure your boots are well-worn before you hit the trail, as blisters will make or break your experience.
  • Sneakers: There is no better feeling than kicking your hiking boots off at the end of the day and changing into a light pair of sneakers.
  • Yoga pants or sweatpants: Once you finish trekking each day, make sure you have a pair of warm, comfortable pants that you can relax in at night.
  • Socks and underwear: Always throw in a few extras.
  • Waterproof jacket: Light to heavy rainfall is common on the trails to Machu Picchu, so a waterproof jacket will be a lifesaver if you do happen to get stuck in a downpour.
  • Waterproof pants: Opt for a light pair that can be unzipped to reveal a shorter length that can be worn around the base of the mountain where it will be warmer.
  • Insulated jacket: Make sure you select a jacket that matches the season that you will be hiking in. If you are hiking in winter, you may need a warmer jacket, whereas in summer this might be completely different.
  • A light fleece jacket: You won’t always need to wear a large waterproof jacket, so for those warmer moments during your trek, a light fleece jacket will keep you warm without feeling as if you are being weighed down by bulky clothing.
  • Long sleeve tops in a light, moisture-wicking fabric: Keep in mind that no matter how cool the temperature is, your body will still sweat as you walk. To stay fresh, consider packing tops with moisture-wicking fabric to keep cool.
  • Hat or cap: Protect your face from the sun during both winter and summer.
  • A beanie: Regardless of the season, this is something you will need most nights.
  • Quick-dry towel: Consider a thin, light towel that dries quickly and does not take up much of your pack.
  • Toiletries: When packing toiletries, aim to pack as little as possible in order to keep the weight of your pack down and only pack the necessities.
  • Toilet paper: Just in case.
  • Packing cubes: A secret travel hack used by those in the know, once you start using packing cubes, you’ll wonder how you ever survived without them.
  • Energy snacks and supplements: Who doesn’t love snacks? There will be food included on your hiking and trekking tour, but it never hurts to munch on a few hidden snacks along the trail. Plus, they keep your energy up during the day.
  • Headlamp or a torch: Don’t forget to pack spare batteries.
  • Insect repellant: For your own personal comfort, there are a number of repellants you can carry with you.
  • Small first aid kit: Your guide or team of porters and chefs will be carrying a full first-aid kit, but it doesn’t hurt to include the odd bandage or plaster.
  • Hand sanitizer or wet wipes: A lifesaver for any hiker and trekker. Just make sure you dispose of these carefully.
  • Camera: You don’t need to be a skilled photographer, but if you want to capture a few memories of a lifetime then don’t forget to pack a camera. You might even want to pack a disposable camera just for fun. If you are carrying top-notch camera gear, make sure it is protected with waterproof casing where possible to reduce the chance of any damage during your trek.
  • Sunglasses: Make sure your sunglasses have a UV filter to protect your eyes.

By carefully considering and packing these items, you can ensure a smoother and more enjoyable adventure to one of the world’s most breathtaking destinations, Machu Picchu.

Recommended Travel Suitcases

For this trip, it’s essential to travel light and smart. A 10-kilo suitcase paired with a 30-liter backpack strikes the perfect balance for mobility and convenience. Opt for a durable, lightweight suitcase with smooth-rolling wheels and a comfortable handle. This allows for easy maneuverability, whether you’re navigating busy airports or rugged terrain. Look for a suitcase with multiple compartments to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible.

A 30-liter backpack adds versatility to your journey, providing enough space to carry daily essentials, snacks, extra layers of clothing, and any other necessities you may need on the trail. Choose a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a sturdy back panel for optimum comfort during long hikes. Additional features like a hydration bladder compartment, rain cover, and external mesh pockets can further enhance your trekking experience. By selecting the right luggage, you ensure an enjoyable, hassle-free adventure to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.

For the Suitcase:

When choosing a suitcase for your Machu Picchu adventure, prioritize durability and functionality. Your suitcase should be able to withstand the varied conditions of travel, from bustling airports to remote trails. A hard-shell suitcase offers robust protection for your belongings, ensuring that fragile items remain intact throughout the journey. Look for a suitcase with a TSA-approved lock for added security while traveling internationally.

In terms of organization, a suitcase with built-in dividers and compartments can be invaluable. These features allow you to segregate your clothing, electronics, and toiletries, making it easier to find what you need without having to unpack everything. Compression straps inside the suitcase help to optimize space and keep items securely in place, reducing the risk of wrinkles and spillage.

For the backpack:

For the backpack, it’s essential to choose one that delivers both practicality and comfort. Opt for a backpack with a sturdy frame and padded straps to distribute weight evenly across your shoulders and back. This will be crucial during long hikes and exploration sessions around Machu Picchu. Look for waterproof or water-resistant materials to protect your belongings from sudden rain showers and humid conditions.

A backpack with multiple compartments can keep you organized and allow for quick access to essential items such as water bottles, snacks, and cameras. Side pockets are particularly useful for storing water bottles, ensuring you stay hydrated throughout your journey. Additionally, internal and external zippered pockets provide secure storage for valuables like your phone, wallet, and travel documents.

Bring Cash

In Cusco and Machu Picchu, cash is king. While most major businesses accept credit cards, it’s always good to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases or unexpected expenses. We recommend bringing some local currency (Peruvian soles) as well as US dollars in small denominations. Keep in mind that there are ATMs available in major cities, but they may not be easily accessible in more remote areas. It’s always better to be prepared with some cash just in case. Don’t worry about exchanging currency beforehand as there are currency exchange services available at the airport and major cities. This helps create a more inclusive and budget-friendly travel experience, allowing solo adventurers to explore and enjoy the journey without added costs, while also fostering a sense of camaraderie within the group.

Wear Comfortable Shoes

As you explore the historic sites and natural wonders, it’s essential to wear comfortable shoes. The daily tours often involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing steps, and navigating cobblestone streets, so a sturdy pair of shoes is a must. Typically, English is used as the common language, allowing seamless communication and understanding among the group members. This approach not only simplifies the tour experience but also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie as you collectively delve into the rich history and breathtaking beauty of Machu Picchu.

About the Altitude

Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially Cusco. The air at higher altitudes has less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. To help your body adjust, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any Andes trek. Cusco is a vibrant city with plenty to explore, so you won’t run out of things to do while acclimating. Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising are some common effects. If you experience any severe symptoms, please get in touch with our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor. About Weather

The weather in Cusco for the 6-day Classic Peru Tour is notoriously unpredictable, presenting a unique challenge for even seasoned travelers. The dry season typically spans from April to October, offering clearer skies and less rainfall. However, it’s not uncommon to experience unexpected showers even in June or bright, sunny days in December. Being prepared for any weather conditions is crucial. Regardless of the month, ensure you carry comprehensive rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, and sturdy shoes. Additionally, pack lightweight, breathable clothing that you can layer in case of temperature changes. When hiking at higher altitudes, the weather can change rapidly, so it’s essential to be prepared for both hot and cold temperatures. Our guides will also provide updates on the weather conditions throughout your trek and advise on any necessary gear adjustments. We want you to have a safe and comfortable journey while also being able to appreciate the natural beauty of Peru.
