Packing List
RECOMMENDED THINGS TO TAKE FOR MACHU PICCHU ROYAL TRIP
First on your packing list for your trip to Cusco should be an open mind and a sense of humour! Don’t come with too many preconceived ideas about what Peru is like; this way, your trip will open you up to incredible new horizons and possibilities. Bring as little as possible. Don’t worry, if you forget something, you can probably buy it in Cusco once you arrive. Tourist shops abound, selling a whole range of items from water bottles and first aid kits to hiking gear. After consulting our customers who have travelled around Cusco and Machu Picchu, we have compiled our definitive list of what to pack for a trip to Peru:
- A GOOD PAIR OF HIKING BOOTS OR WALKING SHOES: This is not the place to bring high heels! Steps and uneven cobblestone surfaces abound, and if it rains, the stones can get slippery.
- A PONCHO FOR THOSE DOWNPOURS: The weather changes very quickly here. An ideal solution is to carry a good quality poncho in your daypack at all times, particularly during the rainy season from November to March. (You can buy ponchos in any of the tourist shops in Cusco, but the quality isn’t always great).
- A WARM JACKET: Evenings and mornings can be very cold, particularly between June and September, so a good quality, waterproof and ideally windproof jacket is ideal. Another good option is a warm fleece which you can wear under a light-weight waterproof, windproof jacket.
- GOOD QUALITY SUNSCREEN AND A SUNHAT: Due to the altitude and Peru’s location close to the Equator, frequent application of sunscreen is advised to avoid any nasty sunburn. Be warned, even when it’s cloudy here, you can get very burnt.
- BRING CLOTHES THAT YOU CAN LAYER: Cool mornings mean you may want to wrap up as you set off for a day’s exploring. However, by 11:00 am, you might want to strip down to a t-shirt and shorts. Warm layers and trousers that can be unzipped into shorts are great. You will only need a couple of changes of clothes as you can get washing done anywhere cheaply.
- A DAY-PACK TO CARRY ALL YOUR BITS AND PIECES: Ideally with a hip strap to make long days hiking and exploring more comfortable.
- A WATER BOTTLE: Plastic disposal is a real problem in the Sacred Valley, so we recommend you buy large bottles and refill water into your own reusable bottle.
- SMALL FIRST AID KIT FOR BASIC CUTS AND BRUISES AND TUMMY UPSETS: Pharmacies abound in Cusco and other small towns in the Sacred Valley where you can buy basic first aid and medical supplies. Do make sure, however, that you bring enough of any prescription medicine you might need as some brands and types of medicine might not be available in Peru. A good rule of thumb is to bring enough prescription medicine to cover you for the length of your trip plus an extra week in case you get delayed. A spare pair of prescription glasses or contact lenses plus a copy of your prescription is a good idea.
- A SMALL POCKET-SIZE TORCH: Earplugs for when you are stuck in a noisy room or want to sleep on the bus or plane.
- **A DUCKPACK **: or rainproof covering for your daypack or backpack is a must, particularly if you are travelling during the rainy season to avoid wet clothes and personal items. This is particularly important if you are going to be doing any multi-day hiking, including the Inca Trail.
- PACK YOUR TOILETRIES IN ZIP LOCK BAGS: For some reason, the altitude can cause shampoo and other bottles to pop, leaving a nasty mess in your bag. Pack all toiletries in sealed bags to avoid any unnecessary mess.
- INSECT REPELLENT: Particularly if you plan on going trekking or visiting Machu Picchu.
- CAMERA: With lots of memory and battery for all those great shots you are definitely going to want to take.
- TAKE ENOUGH PADLOCKS: For every double zipper to stop wandering hands and lock up your important belongings, even in your hotel room.
Recommended Travel Suitcases
For this trip, it’s essential to travel light and smart. A 10-kilo suitcase paired with a 30-liter backpack strikes the perfect balance for mobility and convenience. Opt for a durable, lightweight suitcase with smooth-rolling wheels and a comfortable handle. This allows for easy maneuverability, whether you’re navigating busy airports or rugged terrain. Look for a suitcase with multiple compartments to keep your belongings organized and easily accessible.
A 30-liter backpack adds versatility to your journey, providing enough space to carry daily essentials, snacks, extra layers of clothing, and any other necessities you may need on the trail. Choose a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a sturdy back panel for optimum comfort during long hikes. Additional features like a hydration bladder compartment, rain cover, and external mesh pockets can further enhance your trekking experience. By selecting the right luggage, you ensure an enjoyable, hassle-free adventure to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.
For the Suitcase:
When choosing a suitcase for your Machu Picchu adventure, prioritize durability and functionality. Your suitcase should be able to withstand the varied conditions of travel, from bustling airports to remote trails. A hard-shell suitcase offers robust protection for your belongings, ensuring that fragile items remain intact throughout the journey. Look for a suitcase with a TSA-approved lock for added security while traveling internationally.
In terms of organization, a suitcase with built-in dividers and compartments can be invaluable. These features allow you to segregate your clothing, electronics, and toiletries, making it easier to find what you need without having to unpack everything. Compression straps inside the suitcase help to optimize space and keep items securely in place, reducing the risk of wrinkles and spillage.
For the backpack:
For the backpack, it’s essential to choose one that delivers both practicality and comfort. Opt for a backpack with a sturdy frame and padded straps to distribute weight evenly across your shoulders and back. This will be crucial during long hikes and exploration sessions around Machu Picchu. Look for waterproof or water-resistant materials to protect your belongings from sudden rain showers and humid conditions.
A backpack with multiple compartments can keep you organized and allow for quick access to essential items such as water bottles, snacks, and cameras. Side pockets are particularly useful for storing water bottles, ensuring you stay hydrated throughout your journey. Additionally, internal and external zippered pockets provide secure storage for valuables like your phone, wallet, and travel documents.

Essential Info
Essential Tour Info About 5-Day Machu Picchu Royal Trip
Arriving in Cusco
Arriving in Cusco for the 5-day Machu Picchu Royal Trip can be done through the Cusco airport, but please note that it currently only serves domestic flights. If you are coming from an international destination, you will need to disembark in Lima and clear Customs before continuing to Cusco. It’s important to remember that even if you have a connecting flight to Cusco on the same day and with the same airline, you will still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and then check them in again.
For transportation to Cusco, air travel is recommended as the best option. There are several airlines to choose from, with LAN being one of the popular but more expensive choices. It’s worth noting that flight delays or cancellations can occur due to the high-altitude weather conditions in Cusco. In such cases, air traffic may be temporarily halted. Alternatively, bus travel is available and can be a good option, especially if you are coming from a city closer to Cusco like Puno. Buses in Peru are well maintained and comfortable, although the journey from Lima can be quite long, taking approximately 20 hours.
Once in Cusco, it is essential to take some time to acclimatize to the altitude before beginning your tour. Cusco’s elevation is about 3,400 meters (11,155 feet) above sea level, which can cause altitude sickness for some travelers. To mitigate this, it is advisable to spend your first day or two in Cusco taking it easy, staying hydrated, and avoiding strenuous activities. Some visitors find that drinking coca tea, a traditional herbal remedy, can help alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Preparing your body for the change in altitude can make your visit to Machu Picchu and the surrounding sites a much more enjoyable experience.
Transfers In/Out
When you reach Cusco, our team will be waiting for you at the airport. Look for our representative with a whiteboard displaying the SPT Travel & Tours logo at the arrival terminal. Once you meet them, they will transfer you to your reserved hotel. For the return transfer, we will pick you up from your hotel 2 hours before the time specified in your airline tickets. The drive from your hotel to the airport typically takes around 20-30 minutes, but may vary due to traffic conditions. Once at the airport, you will need to check your flights and settle the airport taxes.
Leave your Suitcase
While on the 5-day Machu Picchu Royal Trip, you’ll leave your suitcase at the hotel. This allows you to travel lightly and with ease. Make sure to carry your small backpack packed with essentials for the day tour. Items you might consider bringing include water, snacks, sunscreen, a hat, a camera, and any personal medications. By carrying only the necessities, you can fully enjoy the stunning landscapes and historical sites without the burden of heavy luggage. This preparation ensures you are comfortable and ready for a memorable experience on your tour. So, leave your suitcase at the hotel and get ready for a fantastic adventure!
Bring Cash
In Cusco and Machu Picchu, cash is king. While most major businesses accept credit cards, it’s always good to have some cash on hand for smaller purchases or unexpected expenses. We recommend bringing some local currency (Peruvian soles) as well as US dollars in small denominations. Keep in mind that there are ATMs available in major cities, but they may not be easily accessible in more remote areas. It’s always better to be prepared with some cash just in case. Don’t worry about exchanging currency beforehand as there are currency exchange services available at the airport and major cities. So, bring some cash with you to fully enjoy your trip without any interruptions.
The Transport
The transport for your 5-day Machu Picchu Royal Trip is designed to be both comfortable and convenient. You will travel by a well-appointed bus and a scenic train that offers spectacular views of the landscapes. The buses are air-conditioned and provide ample seating, ensuring you can sit back and relax while taking in the picturesque surroundings. The train ride is equally enjoyable, featuring panoramic windows that give you an immersive experience of the beautiful Peruvian countryside.
Wear Comfortable Shoes
As you explore the historic sites and natural wonders, it’s essential to wear comfortable shoes. The daily tours often involve walking on uneven terrain, climbing steps, and navigating cobblestone streets, so a sturdy pair of shoes is a must. Choose footwear that offers good support and cushioning to keep your feet comfortable throughout the day. This small preparation ensures you can fully enjoy your adventures without any discomfort, allowing you to focus on the breathtaking views and rich history that await you.

Typically, English is used as the common language, allowing seamless communication and understanding among the group members. This approach not only simplifies the tour experience but also fosters a sense of unity and camaraderie as you collectively delve into the rich history and breathtaking beauty of Machu Picchu.
About the Altitude
Altitude sickness is a common concern when traveling to Peru, especially Cusco. The air at higher altitudes has less oxygen, which means your body has to work harder to get the oxygen it needs. To help your body adjust, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any Andes trek. Cusco is a vibrant city with plenty to explore, so you won’t run out of things to do while acclimating. Altitude sickness can manifest as flu-like symptoms or hangover-like sensations. Headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or exercising are some common effects. If you experience any severe symptoms, please get in touch with our office, and we will assist you in consulting a doctor. Our guides are also trained to recognize and provide assistance for altitude sickness. Staying hydrated, avoiding alcohol and caffeine, and taking it slow can greatly reduce the likelihood of experiencing any significant symptoms.
About Weather
The weather in Cusco for the 5-day Machu Picchu Royal Trip is notoriously unpredictable, presenting a unique challenge for even seasoned travelers. The dry season typically spans from April to October, offering clearer skies and less rainfall. However, it’s not uncommon to experience unexpected showers even in June or bright, sunny days in December. Being prepared for any weather conditions is crucial. Regardless of the month, ensure you carry comprehensive rain gear, including a waterproof jacket, pants, and shoes. Layering your clothes is also recommended as temperatures can fluctuate throughout the day.
Additionally, it’s essential to protect yourself from the sun at high altitudes. The thinner air means there is less protection from harmful UV rays. We highly recommend bringing sunscreen with an SPF of 50 or higher, sunglasses, a hat, and lip balm with SPF.
During the rainy season (November – March), trails may become slippery and muddy, making hiking more challenging. However, this time of year also offers lusher landscapes and fewer crowds on the trails. Our experienced guides will ensure your safety during hikes, but it’s always a good idea to bring waterproof shoes with good traction and trekking poles if needed.
We understand that unexpected weather conditions can occur during your trip. In the case of extreme or dangerous weather, our team will make necessary adjustments to ensure your safety. This may include changing the itinerary or rescheduling activities for a different day. We appreciate your understanding in these situations as we prioritize the well-being of our travelers.
Safety on the Trails
The Machu Picchu Royal Trip involves various hikes through challenging terrain, so proper preparation and safety measures are crucial. Our trained guides will provide you with all necessary safety instructions and equipment before each hike. We require all travelers to have travel insurance that covers any potential accidents or medical emergencies.

Stay hydrated by bringing a reusable water bottle with you on the trails and filling up at designated water stations along the way. Be mindful of your surroundings and follow all safety signs and guidelines provided by our guides.
At higher altitudes, altitude sickness can be a concern for some travelers. Our team will monitor your oxygen levels during hikes, but it’s important to be aware of symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, or headaches. If you experience any of these symptoms, our guides will provide necessary assistance and may recommend resting or descending to lower altitudes.
In addition, we highly recommend wearing appropriate clothing and gear for hiking, such as lightweight, breathable layers and sturdy footwear with good traction. Sun protection is also crucial at higher altitudes where the UV rays can be stronger. Our team will provide a detailed packing list to help you prepare for your trip.

Travel insurance offers you coverage for unforeseen circumstances that can occur before or during your trip.
