PREPARATION FOR HUMANTAY LAKE TOUR:

In preparation for the Humantay Lake hike, it’s crucial to be adequately equipped. Ensure you have warm clothing, as the temperatures near the lake can be quite chilly, especially in the early morning and late afternoon. A refillable water bottle is essential for staying hydrated throughout the hike. Moreover, bringing your camera is highly recommended to capture the stunning views. Don’t forget to pack any personal medication you might need. Lastly, acclimatization to Cusco’s altitude before the hike is highly recommended to prevent altitude sickness. Our team will provide all the necessary equipment for the hike, such as walking sticks, but feel free to bring your own gear if you prefer.

ALTITUDE PROBLEMS:

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common issue when embarking on high-altitude hikes like the one to Humantay Lake. Symptoms can include headache, nausea, dizziness, and extreme fatigue. To mitigate the risk of AMS, we recommend spending at least a couple of days in Cusco acclimatizing to the altitude before undertaking the hike. During this period, it’s important to stay hydrated, eat nutritious food, and get plenty of rest. Our guides are also trained in recognizing and managing the symptoms of AMS and will be there to assist should any problems arise. However, we recommend consulting with your doctor before the trip if you’re concerned about altitude sickness.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The ideal time to visit Humantay Lake is during the dry season, which typically runs from May to September. During this period, skies are usually clear and the trails are less slippery, making the hike more enjoyable and safe. However, the dry season also coincides with the peak tourist season, so expect larger crowds on the trail and at the lake. If you prefer a more peaceful experience and don’t mind unpredictable weather, consider visiting in the shoulder months of April or October. Nevertheless, the ethereal beauty of Humantay Lake is captivating all year round.

TRAVEL INSURANCE:

Travel insurance is strongly recommended for all trekkers joining us on the Humantay Lake hike. While we take every precaution to ensure your safety, unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or extreme weather conditions may occur. A comprehensive travel insurance policy should ideally cover medical expenses, trip cancellation, loss of luggage, and evacuation costs. Ensure your policy covers high-altitude trekking activities. Evaluate your insurance options carefully and select a policy that best suits your needs. Remember, it’s not just about protecting your investment in the trip, but also about ensuring your well-being and peace of mind during your adventure.

Travel Guide

TRAVEL GUIDE ABOUT HUMANTAY LAKE TOUR

Humantay Lake is a stunningly beautiful body of water nestled high in the Peruvian Andes, a gem of the Salkantay Trek. Its turquoise waters are fed by the glacial melt from the Humantay mountain peak, presenting a mesmerizing contrast against the rugged, snow-capped Andean ranges that surround it. The hike to the lake can be challenging due to the high altitude, but the breathtaking views reward every strenuous step, making it a must-visit destination for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

LOCATION AND ALTITUD.

Humantay Lake is located in the Cordillera Vilcabamba range of the Andes in Peru, around 130 km northwest of the city of Cusco. The lake sits at an impressive altitude of approximately 4,200 meters (or about 13,780 feet) above sea level. This high-altitude location contributes to the lake’s crystalline turquoise waters and the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding snow-capped mountains. It’s important to keep in mind that due to the high altitude, some visitors might experience symptoms of altitude sickness. It is recommended to take time to acclimatize in Cusco or another high-altitude city before tackling the trek to Humantay Lake.

HISTORY:

The area surrounding Humantay Lake is steeped in history, with ties to the ancient indigenous peoples of Peru. Long before it became a popular tourist destination, it held spiritual significance for the Incas. They believed the mountains were gods, or ‘Apus’, and the pristine waters of Humantay Lake were considered to be sacred. The Incas would make offerings to these Apus in hopes of earning their favor and ensuring the prosperity of their people. Today, this rich history adds another layer of intrigue to the breathtaking natural beauty of Humantay Lake.

In addition to its cultural significance, Humantay Lake also plays an important role in the local ecosystem. The lake serves as a vital water source for surrounding communities and provides a home to diverse plant and animal species. With its impressive depth of 35 meters and crystal-clear waters, visitors can catch a glimpse of trout swimming near the surface or spot Andean ducks gliding along the water. The surrounding landscape is also home to a variety of flora and fauna, including the native quinoa plant which has been cultivated in this region for centuries.

GETTING THERE:

Getting to Humantay Lagoon is an adventure in itself, often starting from the city of Cusco. Several tour companies offer daily trips to the lake, which usually include transportation, a guide, and sometimes a meal. The journey typically begins with a drive through the scenic countryside to the town of Mollepata, followed by a challenging, but rewarding, hike up the mountain to the lake. The hike takes approximately 2 hours and is at high altitude, so it’s recommended to be well acclimated before embarking on this expedition. For those seeking a more independent experience, it’s also possible to rent a car and drive to Mollepata, where you can find the trailhead for the hike to Humantay Lake. However you choose to get there, the incredible beauty and history of Humantay Lake make it a worthwhile destination.

WEATHER:

The weather around Humantay Lake varies greatly depending upon the season. During the dry season, from May to September, visitors can expect chilly mornings and evenings with warmer sunny days. The temperature at night can fall below freezing, but during the day it can rise to around 20°C (68°F). The wet season, from October to April, sees frequent rain and cloud cover, and the temperature generally stays between 5°C (41°F) to 15°C (59°F). Regardless of the season, it is advisable to dress in layers and carry rain gear due to the unpredictable weather conditions and high altitude.

WHEN TO GO:

The optimal time to visit Humantay Lake depends greatly on your preferences. If you’re a fan of sunny and dry weather, it’s best to plan your trip during the dry season, from May to September. This is also the busiest time for tourism, so expect some crowds. If you don’t mind a bit of rain and prefer a quieter atmosphere, consider visiting during the wet season, from October to April. However, always be prepared for sudden changes in weather, as they can occur at any time.

BIODIVERSITY:

Humantay Lagoon is known for its rich biodiversity. The area surrounding the lake is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The lake itself is teeming with a range of fish species, while the air above is often filled with the sight of soaring Andean condors. The grassy plains and gentle slopes around the lake are dotted with wildflowers during the spring, offering a feast for the eyes. Mammals such as vicunas and vizcachas are also often spotted in the vicinity. The unique combination of high altitude, diverse ecosystems, and the presence of a glacial lake makes Humantay a hotspot for biodiversity and a must-see for wildlife lovers.

SAFETY:

Visitors to Humantay Lake should always prioritize safety due to the lake’s high altitude and unpredictable weather conditions. High altitude can lead to conditions such as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), so it’s essential to properly acclimatize, stay hydrated, and carry altitude sickness medication. Wearing sturdy hiking boots is crucial to navigate the rugged terrain safely, and warm, waterproof clothing is a must to protect against sudden weather changes. Always remember to carry a first aid kit for emergencies. Additionally, respect the local wildlife and maintain a safe distance. As always, leave no trace and help maintain the lake’s pristine condition for future visitors.
