Machu Picchu is home to network of trails also called the Great Inca Trails to Machu Picchu, an extensive trail system that covers from the Andes in the west to the Amazon Jungle in the east. The diversity of trekking to Machu Picchu cannot be found in any other region of the world. In fact, the lowest point is 1,300m above sea-level in the region of Santa Teresa while the highest point is the mountain of Salkantay at 6,271m above sea-level; the two points are, in a straight line, only 80 kilometers
The majority of visitors to Machu Picchu come in via the International Airport in Cusco. It is in Cusco that trekkers need to acquire their permits and other documentation, either from a trekking agent or from the appropriate offices like: “SUNRISE PERU TREK”. These documents will be checked along the trekking route. For those with little time to spend in Cusco there are short hikes to witness breathtaking views of Machu Picchu Inca citadel and the Andes, otherwise trek for 4, 5, 7 or 8 days over stunning challenging mountain passes.

For the Inca trail on the 2020 will the government has sanctioned a small portion of the thousands of miles of Inca Trail preserved for this hike. The classic most popular route is 26 miles and takes 4 days. You can do this same route at a slower pace for a 5 day trek. There is a longer version for those trying to make it more challenging – a 7 day trek that combines the Salkantay pass with the Inca Trail. And there is a short 2 day version which is really just one day hiking and the second day is spent at Machu Picchu. No matter which route you choose, you will need a PERMIT to do hike to Machu Picchu.
The PERMIT Process for 2020!
In order to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu on 2020 you need a PERMIT, which can only be purchased by an INCA TRAIL TOUR OPERATOR, like “Sunrise Peru Trek”. We purchase this permit on your behalf once you make your booking. We need your full details and deposit in order for us to secure you.
SERNSNP, an institution part of the Ministry of Culture of Peru controls all permits. They have now separated the permits for the 4 Days Trek, 5 Days Trek and 7 Days treks from the shorter 2 day trek. For the longer treks, there are 500 permits per day and EVERYONE needs a permit, including crew, so permits sell out very fast. You only need a permit for your start date of the trek (for the 7 day trek this would be for day 4). The government shares how many permits are still available in real time, which we share on our Inca Trail availability page.
