Essential Info

Essential info for the Salkantay Trek.

Arriving in Cusco:

When arriving in Cusco, it is important to note that the Cusco airport is exclusively for domestic flights. Therefore, international visitors arriving by air must go through customs in Lima. Even if your flight to Cusco is operated by the same airline on the same day, you still need to retrieve your bags in Lima and check them back in.

The most preferred mode of arrival in Cusco is by plane, with multiple airlines to choose from. LAN Airlines, although more expensive, offer a wider range of flights. It is worth mentioning that disruptions and cancellations are not uncommon due to the high altitude in Cusco, which can affect plane landings based on weather conditions. Another option is to take a bus; however, it is important to consider that the journey from Lima can take up to 20 hours. While Peru buses are generally comfortable, it is best to avoid this option if possible. Traveling from nearer cities such as Puno or Arequipa would be much more practical.

The briefing of 5-day Salkantay Trek.

We cordially invite you to our pre-trek briefing, an essential gathering that offers comprehensive details about your 5-day Salkantay Trek. This informative session will take place on the eve of your trek’s departure, precisely at 6:00 PM. The venue, subject to confirmation upon your arrival in Cusco, will either be our official office or the convenience of your hotel. This is an opportune moment to quench your curiosity and resolve any uncertainties related to the trek. Our experienced guides will be at your disposal, ready to provide persuasive insights into the trek’s itinerary, expectations, and invaluable tips. Step into this exciting session to fully prepare yourself for an unforgettable journey into the heart of nature’s grandeur.

About your Luggage:

For your convenience, we offer a luggage service to ensure a hassle-free trekking experience. Before the trek, you have the option to store any excess items either at your lodge in Cusco or with us. Rest assured that your bags will be securely stored throughout the duration of your trek and will be promptly returned to you upon your return. To facilitate easy identification, please ensure that each bag is properly tagged.

About the Altitude:

When traveling to Peru, particularly Cusco, many people have concerns about altitude sickness. Higher altitudes have less oxygen in the air, which means that the body has to work harder to get the necessary oxygen levels. To help your body adjust, we recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any treks in the Andes.

Altitude sickness can have symptoms similar to a hangover or flu, including headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or breathing during exercise. If you experience severe symptoms, please contact our office immediately for medical assistance.

Fortunately, most people only experience mild symptoms. However, if you engage in strenuous activity without allowing your body enough time to adjust, you may become ill from altitude sickness during the 5-day Salkantay Trek. It is also important to avoid excessive consumption of coffee or alcohol, as they can dehydrate your body. Additionally, smoking should be avoided as it hinders the efficient absorption of oxygen by the body. It is recommended to refrain from taking sleeping pills, as they can lead to shallow breathing during sleep, which hampers the body’s oxygen absorption.

In some cases, your doctor may prescribe medications such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone to help prevent altitude sickness before starting your ascent. Along with following the aforementioned precautions, such as staying hydrated and progressing at a moderate pace, allowing your body to adjust gradually, you can enjoy every step of your journey and minimize the risk of altitude sickness.

The Weather:

The weather in Cusco can be quite unpredictable. While the months between April and October are typically dry, there can still be variations in precipitation and sunshine. It is important to come prepared with the necessary rain gear, such as a waterproof jacket, pants, and poncho. Additionally, don’t forget to bring gloves in case of cold or humid conditions. Keep in mind that you may experience different seasons throughout your trek, so having various layers of clothing that you can adjust according to temperature changes is essential. Lastly, a cozy yet portable padded jacket will be beneficial when the night falls.

Porter staff included:

Our camping excursions include a dedicated team of porters who will handle all aspects of setting up campsites and transporting equipment. They will also be responsible for carrying the duffel bag provided during the pre-trek briefing for your 5-day Salkantay Trek. It is important to note that each individual travel bag should not exceed 7 kg / 14 lbs and must contain both your sleeping bag and air mattress. Rest assured that our experienced porters will ensure a smooth and enjoyable trekking experience for you.

The duffel bag provided for the 5-day Salkantay Trek is of limited size, ensuring convenient transport of your clothes during the hike. Please keep in mind that the maximum weight allowed for the bag is 7 kg/15.4 lbs. Rest assured, the responsible horsemen will carry your duffel bag from one site to another, while different horses will be assigned to transport sustenance and camping equipment. It’s important to note that access to items inside the duffel bag will not be available until the end of each day’s route, as the horsemen and horses generally stay ahead of the group.

Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu

Travel insurance:

Travel insurance is a small investment that can yield enormous protection. Unforeseen circumstances or emergencies can arise at any time, disrupting your travel plans. With travel insurance, you can protect the money you’ve invested into your trip. It’s a safety net, providing coverage for situations such as medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. Moreover, securing travel insurance is a breeze. It can easily be purchased before you set off on your journey, giving you peace of mind as you embark on your adventure. We strongly recommend that you consider this vital step in your travel preparation.

Frequent Questions for Salkantay Trek

1.- How difficult is the 5-Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?

The 5-Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is an adventure that offers a moderate to challenging experience for average travelers or tourists. While not impossible, it requires a certain level of fitness due to the physical demands. It is strongly recommended that all trekkers spend at least 2 days in Cusco before the trek to acclimatize to the altitude. It is important to note that being extremely fit does not guarantee immunity from altitude sickness.

The Salkantay Trek covers a total distance of approximately 72 kilometers (45 miles) and is completed over a duration of 5, 4, or 3 days, with the remaining day spent exploring Machu Picchu. Generally, the Salkantay Trek is considered slightly more challenging than the Inca Trail.

2.- What’s the most challenging section of the Salkantay Trek?

The 5-Day Salkantay Trek is an exhilarating adventure that takes you through the challenging Salkantay Pass, situated at an impressive altitude of 14,760123 feet/4,600 meters above sea level. This section of the trek to Machu Picchu poses its own set of difficulties, including strong winds, freezing temperatures, and the potential onset of altitude sickness for some hikers. However, rest assured that any symptoms will dissipate once you begin your descent, and oxygen will be readily available if needed. The Salkantay Pass marks the highest point of the trek, making it the most demanding section, encompassing uphill climbs and the constant challenge of navigating a low-oxygen environment. Prepare yourself for these unique obstacles as you embark on this incredible journey.

3.- When is the best time to do the Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?

The 5-Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu is a remarkable adventure that can be undertaken at any time of the year, but we highly recommend embarking on this journey during the dry season. In Cusco, the dry season extends from mid-April to mid-November, while the wet season prevails from December to March. Amongst these months, June to September are particularly popular for treks to Machu Picchu, especially the awe-inspiring Salkantay Trek. These months coincide with summer vacations in Europe and the US, drawing many enthusiasts to explore this breathtaking route. However, it is worth noting that May and October offer optimal weather conditions for an unforgettable experience.

4.- What is the weather like for Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu?

The 5-Day Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu offers a diverse range of weather conditions as it traverses various terrains and altitudes. While the weather is generally pleasant, the Salkantay Pass and the nearby areas require caution due to potentially freezing temperatures. However, the remaining campsites along the route enjoy warmer climates thanks to their proximity to the Amazon Jungle.

5.- Can I change my starting date for 5-Day Salkantay Trek?

Once your tickets for the Salkantay Trek have been purchased along with your security deposit, it is possible to change your starting date. However, please note that an additional fee of around $150 USD is required for this modification. It is important to understand that the tickets we purchase are non-refundable and non-transferable, which is why changing the tour date incurs an extra cost.

6.- Is altitude sickness a problem? What should I do to avoid altitude sickness?

Altitude sickness can be a concern when traveling to high altitudes. To prevent altitude sickness, it is important to acclimatize to the change in altitude gradually. It is recommended to spend at least two days in Cusco before undertaking any treks. Additionally, avoiding alcohol, eating light meals, and staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water is advised. It is important to listen to your body’s cues and refrain from pushing yourself too hard on the trek. Taking breaks when needed and drinking coca leaf tea can also be beneficial. If you have any concerns, consulting with your doctor about Diamox pills may be helpful.

7.- What should I do if I get altitude sickness during the Trek?

If you happen to experience altitude sickness during your trek, it is crucial to promptly inform your guide. They will provide you with the necessary assistance and support. It’s important to be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches, nausea, extreme fatigue, dizziness, and a general feeling of unease.

8.- What type of food will we get on the Salkantay Trek?

During your 5-Day Salkantay Trek adventure, you can expect to savor a delectable range of high-energy meals meticulously prepared by our skilled cooks. Our menu features mouthwatering options such as pasta, rice, succulent chicken, farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as a delightful selection of oatmeal, eggs, and other nutritious breakfast items. For those with vegetarian preferences, rest assured that we offer delightful alternatives upon request when making your booking.

9.- How many days do I need for acclimatization?.-

For the 5-Day Salkantay Trek, it is typically advisable to spend at least two days in the city of Cusco or another location at the same altitude to ensure proper acclimatization. Acclimatization is crucial for trekking in high altitudes, especially considering that the highest point in the Salkantay Trek reaches 4,600m.

Without sufficient acclimatization, you may struggle to remember that the trekking itself requires more technical skill than physical endurance. Therefore, it is highly recommended to prioritize the acclimatization process to ensure a successful and enjoyable trekking experience.
