The Inca Trail is one of the world’s most iconic and challenging treks, and it couldn’t be done without the hard work of the dedicated porters who carry your luggage. As no pack animals are allowed on this trail, experienced porters will gently take all the essential food and camping gear you need for your 4-day journey to Machu Picchu’s Puerta del Sol.
On top of that, you can hire a porter to help transport your personal belongings so you don’t have to carry everything yourself. This allows you to enjoy the journey without worrying about carrying heavy luggage for 26 miles of trekking.
The dedicated Inca Trail Porters are true professionals who take pride in their work. They are experienced in navigation, and can provide a wealth of knowledge about the history and culture of the ancient Inca civilization along the trail.
In addition to helping carry your belongings, they will also set up camp for you each day, prepare meals with locally sourced food, and ensure everything is ready for you when you arrive at the end of the day.

The Inca Trail porters literally take the load off your shoulders during the 4-day trek to Machu Picchu, approximately 26-miles trekking to the entrance to Machu Picchu’s Puerta del Sol. No pack animals are allowed on this iconic trail, so porters carry all the essential food and camping gear your group needs. You can also hire a porter to help transport your personal belongings.
For the 4-day Inca Trail we include a personal porter that carry up to 7 kilos in duffle bags that we provide. This duffle bags you’ll receive at the briefing time, one day before your trek and will be transported by your porter from camp to camp.
Why do we bring duffle bags?
When doing the Inca Trail, we must be very careful with the weight we carry for each group, remember that the Inca Trail is only possible with the help of our porters. Our Porters team is the hardest working staff on the mountain and for this very reason we have to take care of them as much as we can. As you know the Inca Trail is the most famous trek in Peru and, for this reason is the most regulated trek. This is to preserve the park and also to protect the staff who work and make this hike possible. As a licensed tour operator, SUNRISE PERU TREK Travel & Tours religiously follows many rules and there is a specific one regarding the weight that each client can bring, this is the 7kg rule. Each client can only bring an additional 7 kilos. weight in addition to the backpack that each one carries. For this reason, we provide our duffel bags that are the perfect size to carry 7-kilos/ 15-pound need and also to be comfortable for our gear to carry.
What does a 7kg duffel bag included in the price mean?
Not all companies include it in their price and charge the extra 7 kg. Leaving clients, the option of carrying everything on their backs, which is not recommended due to the difficulty and the altitude of the trail. At SUNRISE PERU TREK Travel & Tours we include it in the price so that you can solve all this issue and we also hire more porters for the group. to better distribute the weight and make your hike to Machu Picchu easier.
What size are the duffel bags for the Inca Trail?
Our canvas bags measure 66 cm x 35 cm (25.9 x 12.9 inches)
Don’t forget: your sleeping bag and your Air mattress are part of this weight. If you rent these items from us, you should know that our sleeping bag and Air Matt weigh a total of 3 kilos, leaving you with 4 kilos for your personal belongings, which is more than enough.
Does the porter will walk with me?
No, the system along the 4-day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, is a bit different from other treks. While on the Inca Trail, you will only have access to your duffle bag at the camps. Porters do not walk alongside hikers. They have everything prepared so that clients can enjoy their meals after trekking. Our porters are organized in three different teams (Tents team, Duffle bag team and kitchen team). Onlu the kitchen team will stop along the train with the lunch ready and once you have finished your meal you will start again. They pack everything up, walk to the next campsite, get there before the hikers, and put everything back in its place.
An additional carrier
We can also fully understand that 7 kilos may not be enough depending on your needs. You can hire an additional porter to carry an additional duffel bag, which means 7 kilos for you. This must be arranged with our sales representative depending on availability. it happens for you. The same rules apply as for a normal sports bag. You can only access these duffel bags at your campsites. The cost of an additional porter is $80.
When will I receive my duffel bag?
For the Inca Trail you’ll receive your duffle bag at the briefing time. Our Inca Trail guide will help you in every detail on how to use it and how to pack your things. After the briefing, you can take your duffle bag to your hotel to start packing. If you are unable to attend your informational meeting or need to be rescheduled. Please let our team know so we can provide you with the necessary assistance.
What should I carry in my duffel bag?
As mentioned above. You will only have access to your travel bag at the campsite. For this reason, we recommend you pack what you will need during the trek, such as: water, sunglasses, snacks, a spare shirt, medicines, an afternoon jacket, etc. In your backpack and everything else. like: the rest of your clothes, your spare shoes, your medicine, the rest of your snacks and the rest of your things in your duffel bag.
Please remember that during the day you’ll walk with a small bag pack (30 lts) where you’ll carry the essential things for the day. Once you arrive to the camp, you’ll have access to your duffle bag.
