The Red Valley in Cusco – Peru

The colors of the Red Valley in Cusco – Peru

The mineral sediment creates the particular color found in Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley in Cusco – peru.
These painted mountains in Peru are unlike anything you’ve ever seen before. The Red Valley and the Rainbow mountain has an incredible red color due to the iron rich soil that covers almost the entire area. In this natural wonder you will find vivid red and green tones throughout the year.

According to the investigation of the Cultural Landscape Office of the Decentralization of the City of Cusco in Peru, the colorations of the mountains are due to the mineralogical composition that it has: the color is due to the red clay belonging to the upper tertiary.

Very Importanta.- Much like a visit to or Trekkoing to Rainbow Mountain, make sure you are well prepared for the altitude. Try to acclimatize yourself before you go. Flying from Lima to Cusco and walking 5100m the next day is not a good idea. Also, take your altitude pills already in Cusco so that they will work once you arrive and bring extra ones.

What is the Red Valley of Cusco?

It’s a valley of red mountains dotted with green and gray, making it look like it’s from another planet. The view is endless. It is a very quiet place, as few tourists visit it, which makes it a pleasant visit.
Many tourists, when they go around the mountain with 7 colors, choose to return through this valley and thus to visit the 2 places.

Location:

The Red Valley is located at 3 hours from the city of Cusco, It is situated behind the Rainbow Mountain in the district of “Pitumarca”.

The elevation of the Red Valley is 5,200 meters above sea level, so we recommend taking at least two days to acclimatize before embarking on this adventure. The better you feel, the more you will appreciate this dreamy landscape.

This remarkable work of nature is located at 30 minutes from Rainbow Mountain. The walk in the Red Valley is not that difficult but it will depend on your physical condition and your body’s reaction to the altitude.
Visiting Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley is something you can complete on a day trip. Please note that to enter the Red Valley you will need to pay an entrance fee to the communities.
