PREPARATION

Preparing for the Short Inca Trail Trek involves both physical and logistical readiness. Physically, you should embark on a regular exercise regime in the months leading up to the trek, focusing on cardiovascular activities such as running, cycling, or hiking. The better your fitness level, the more you’ll enjoy the trek. Logistically, pack light but ensure you have all the essentials. This includes a good quality hiking backpack, sturdy hiking boots, layered clothing to accommodate for variable weather conditions, rain gear, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sunscreen), water purification tablets, and basic first aid supplies. Remember to also bring any personal medication you may require. Lastly, get a health check-up to ensure you’re medically fit for the high-altitude hiking.

ABOUT ALTITUDE

Altitude sickness can be a potential concern for trekkers embarking on the Short Inca Trail Trek. It is caused by the lower levels of oxygen available at high altitude, and can manifest in symptoms like headaches, nausea, dizziness, and shortness of breath. It’s critical to understand that altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of their fitness level or age. To mitigate the risk, it’s recommended to spend a few days acclimating at high altitude prior to starting the trek. During the trek itself, maintaining a slow and steady pace, staying hydrated, and avoiding alcohol can help prevent the onset of altitude sickness. If symptoms persist or worsen, descending to a lower altitude as soon as possible is crucial. It’s always advisable to consult with a healthcare professional before the trek, and carry medication for altitude sickness if recommended.

BEST TIME TO HIKE

The best time to hike the Short Inca Trail Trek is typically during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During these months, the weather is generally clear and the trails are in good condition. However, these are also the busiest months, so expect some crowd on the trail. If you prefer a quieter trail and don’t mind the occasional rain, the shoulder seasons—April and October—are excellent choices. Remember, no matter when you choose to go, the mountain weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for sudden changes.

SHORT INCA TRAIL PERMITS

Obtaining permits for the Short Inca Trail is a crucial part of your trek preparation. The Peruvian government strictly limits the number of people allowed on the Inca Trail each day to protect the environment and preserve the trail’s integrity. Therefore, it’s essential to book your trek several months in advance, especially during the peak season. When booking, ensure your tour company handles the permit acquisition. Remember that once purchased, these permits are non-refundable and non-transferable, meaning you cannot change the date once it is booked, nor can you replace a trekker’s name with another. Always double-check your details when booking as any discrepancy can lead to the cancellation of your permit. Lastly, note that children under 14 are not allowed on the trail, so if you are planning a family adventure, consider alternate routes or activities for younger family members.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

In terms of travel insurance, it’s imperative to ensure you have a comprehensive plan that covers trekking at high altitudes. Not all travel insurance policies cover adventurous activities like hiking, so check your policy details carefully. Your coverage should include emergency evacuation, given the remote nature of the trail and the potential need for immediate medical attention due to conditions like altitude sickness. Also, ensure your insurance covers trip cancellations or delays, lost or damaged baggage, and other unforeseen travel mishaps. Remember, while everyone hopes their trip goes as planned, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Before you embark on the Short Inca Trail Trek, make sure you have a reliable travel insurance policy that provides thorough coverage for your adventure.
