Travel Guide

Travel Guide About Sacred Valley Tour

The Sacred Valley of the Incas, or Urubamba Valley, is a majestic region in Peru that served as the heart of the Inca Empire. Nestled amid towering Andean peaks and traversed by the Urubamba River, the valley is replete with archaeological wonders and rich cultural heritage. The area is dotted with numerous Inca ruins, including the fortified town of Ollantaytambo and the circular terraces at Moray, both
the ingenious architectural mastery of the Incas. The valley’s fertile soils once supported the Inca civilization with a bounty of maize and other crops. Today, it’s not just a testament to the Inca’s past prowess, but a vibrant region attracting visitors with its beautiful landscapes, traditional markets, and welcoming local communities.

History:

The history of the Sacred Valley is steeped in the grandeur of the Inca Empire, which ruled this region from the 13th until the 16th century. It was during this epoch that the Incas constructed many of their most remarkable architectural feats, harnessing the natural landscape to form complex agricultural terraces, fortifications, and ceremonial sites. The valley was a crucial area for the Incas, not only for its agricultural potential but also for its spiritual significance.

The Incas worshipped the natural elements, and the presence of the towering mountains and the mighty Urubamba River made this valley a place of profound religious importance. The fall of the Inca Empire came with the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, marking a period of drastic change. However, the legacy of the Incas endures, preserved in the stunning ruins that pepper the landscape and in the traditions of the local communities who call the Sacred Valley home.

Getting There:

Getting to the Sacred Valley is a journey as remarkable as the destination itself. The most common route is from Cusco, the erstwhile capital of the Inca Empire, located approximately 60 kilometers southeast. Travelers can opt for a taxi or colectivo (shared taxi) ride, which typically takes about an hour to reach the picturesque town of Pisac, known as the gateway to the Sacred Valley. Alternatively, for those interested in a more scenic journey, the PeruRail offers a captivating train ride from Cusco to Ollantaytambo, providing stunning views of the Andean landscapes and glaciers. It’s advisable to allow ample time to acclimatize to the high altitude before embarking on explorations in the valley.

When to Go:

The best time to visit the Sacred Valley is between May and September, during the dry season. The skies are mostly clear, offering breathtaking views of the Andean peaks. This is also the ideal time for hiking and other outdoor activities. However, this period is also the busiest in terms of tourism, so expect crowds at popular sites. Travelers seeking a quieter experience should consider visiting in the shoulder seasons of April or October when the weather is still generally pleasant, and tourist numbers are lower.

Where to Stay:

When it comes to accommodation in the Sacred Valley, travelers have a plethora of choices, ranging from budget-friendly hostels to luxury hotels. The town of Pisac offers a variety of homely guesthouses and B&Bs, perfect for those seeking a friendly, local experience. For travelers wanting a more upscale experience, the town of Urubamba boasts several high-end resorts that offer world-class amenities amidst the stunning Andean landscapes. Ollantaytambo, another popular base for exploring the Sacred Valley, offers a mix of options catering to diverse budgets. Here, travelers can find anything from charming, family-run inns to stunning boutique hotels. No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll be treated to the region’s outstanding natural beauty and the warmth of its people.

Things to Do:

The Sacred Valley is brimming with activities fit for all types of travelers. Adventure enthusiasts can partake in zip-lining or white-water rafting in the Urubamba River. A visit to the iconic Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, is a must-do for history and archaeology buffs. Try hiking the Inca trail for a truly immersive experience. For a taste of local culture, explore the bustling Pisac market, where you can buy traditional Andean handicrafts. Don’t miss a visit to the Maras Salt Mines and Moray Terraces, which offer a glimpse into the Inca’s advanced agricultural practices. For relaxation, take a stroll in the tranquil gardens of Ollantaytambo or enjoy a tranquil picnic amidst the Valley’s verdant landscapes. Remember to try some local cuisine, particularly the Peruvian corn and potatoes, which are a culinary delight.

Important sites to visit in The Sacred Valley of the Incas:

Among the important sites to visit in the Sacred Valley is the Pisac Ruins, where you can explore an ancient Inca fortress and marvel at the agricultural terraces carved into the mountain. The Ollantaytambo Ruins, another significant archaeological site, offer impressive Incan stonework and stunning panoramic views of the valley. The Chinchero District is home to a colonial-era church with beautiful frescoes and a bustling Sunday market. For a unique experience, visit the Awana Kancha Alpaca Farm to see alpacas and llamas up close, and learn about traditional weaving techniques. Last but not least, a trip to the Sacred Valley would not be complete without visiting the UNESCO World Heritage site of Machu Picchu, the awe-inspiring ancient Incan citadel perched high in the Andes Mountains.

As you explore the Sacred Valley, keep an eye out for various festivals and celebrations that take place throughout the year. One of the most significant is Inti Raymi, a festival honoring the Incan Sun God held on June 24th. This vibrant celebration is filled with traditional dances, music, and colorful costumes, providing visitors with a taste of authentic Andean culture. Other festivals to look out for include the Chaccu ceremony, where local communities round up wild vicunas for shearing and release them back into their natural habitat, as well as the Qoyllur Rit’i pilgrimage, a spiritual event held in honor of the Apus (mountain deities).

Food and Drink:

When it comes to food and drink, the Sacred Valley does not disappoint. The area is known for its traditional Peruvian cuisine, with corn, potatoes, and quinoa featuring heavily in many dishes. One must-try is ‘Cuy’, a dish made from guinea pig, which is a regional delicacy. For those adventurous in spirit, ‘Chicha de Jora’, a fermented corn beer, is a local favorite. On the other side of the spectrum, fresh fruit juices and Andean herbal teas like ‘mate de coca’ are readily available and make for delicious, refreshing alternatives. For a gourmet experience, many restaurants offer ‘Novo-Andino’ cuisine, a modern interpretation of traditional Andean ingredients and cooking techniques. No matter where you choose to dine, you’ll be treated to fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the chance to experience the rich culinary heritage of the Sacred Valley.

The incredible biodiversity

The Sacred Valley is not only a testament to the cultural richness of Peru but also a reflection of its incredible biodiversity. The valley and its surrounding areas host a variety of ecosystems, housing a multitude of plant and animal species. From the high-altitude grasslands, home to vicuñas and spectacled bears, to the fertile river valleys teeming with birdlife, the region is a treasure trove for naturalists and wildlife lovers alike. A variety of crops are also grown in the valley, including corn, potatoes, and quinoa, quintessential elements of the Peruvian cuisine. This biodiversity plays a fundamental role in maintaining ecological balance and supporting the livelihoods of the local population, underscoring the importance of its preservation.

Safety:

Safety is a paramount concern for travelers, and the Sacred Valley is generally considered a safe destination. However, it is always wise to adhere to basic safety measures. Always keep your belongings secure and be cautious of pickpockets in crowded areas, particularly during festivals. If you plan on attending any of the celebrations or venturing out into the natural landscapes, remember to dress appropriately for the weather and altitude. It’s also important to stay hydrated and protect against sun exposure as the UV radiation can be intense. For any health concerns, there are clinics and hospitals available throughout the region. Always remember, safe travel is responsible travel.

    Responsible travel...

    • Litter collection on our treks

The 5 Pieces litter collection initiative, where travellers collect 5 or more pieces of plastic or paper litter on the trail each day, is offered on all of our treks. This simple yet effective initiative harnesses the collective power of tourists to keep wilderness trails clean and to educate local communities about the negative impact of litter on their environment and tourism economy.

    • Porter welfare policies

All porters that we employ receive a good working wage that is regulated by the Trekking Agents Association of Peru and the Labor ministry of Peru, paying as per their guidelines, which are unionized. We are one of the only trekking companies in Peru to provide porters with three meals a day, prepared by our cooks, as well as lodging or tents, sleeping mats and sleeping bags. Porters receive income protection and life insurance and have access to the same first aid care that travellers receive including emergency evacuation if required. Porters are provided with a wind and waterproof jacket and over-trousers, leather or canvas shoes and a warm cap, and carry a maximum of 20kgs in provided backpacks.

    • Eco-campsites

Our series of eco-campsites during our treks contribute to the local economy by providing employment and yearly rent and by bringing trekkers into nearby villages to purchase handicrafts. The campsites minimize our environmental footprint by using biodegradable products.
