Travel Guide

Travel Guide About Machu Picchu Tour

Moray and the Maras Salt Mines are two of Peru’s most striking and intriguing tourist destinations. Moray, believed to be an ancient Incan agricultural lab, features concentric terraces forming a natural amphitheater that plunges deep into the earth. Each level of this ingenious design has a different microclimate, enabling the Incas to cultivate various crops. Not far away, the Maras Salt Mines paint a picturesque landscape. These centuries-old terraced pools, fed by a salty spring, are still in operation today. The sparkling white pools against the green Andean slopes create a stunning contrast, a sight that leaves visitors spellbound.

Location:

Maras and Moray are located in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, in the Cusco region of Peru. Maras is best known for its salt evaporation ponds that have been in use since Inca times, while Moray boasts unique Inca ruins, which are circular terraces believed to have been an agricultural laboratory. The area is approximately 50 kilometers north of Cusco, the historic heart of the Inca Empire. Whether you choose to visit as part of a guided tour or independently, these sites offer a window into the rich history and astounding natural beauty of the region.

History:

The history of both Moray and the Maras Salt Mines is deeply entwined with the Inca civilization. The Incas, being advanced agronomists, used Moray as an agricultural experiment station to study the effect of different climatic conditions on crops. By growing plants on different levels, they replicated the varying conditions of their expansive empire, from the dry coastal regions to the high Andean plains.
Similarly, the Maras Salt Mines, also known as ‘Salineras de Maras’, have been in use since pre-Inca times. They are believed to have been developed by the Chanapata civilization around 200 AD, long before the advent of the Inca Empire. These salt pans have been passed down through families for generations and remain a significant source of salt today, demonstrating the enduring ingenuity of the region’s ancient inhabitants.

Getting There:

Getting to Maras and Moray is an adventure in itself, immersing travelers in the breathtaking Andean landscapes. From the city of Cusco, the historical capital of the Inca Empire, both locations can be reached by road. The journey takes approximately one hour and a half, traversing through the scenic Sacred Valley. Tour buses, taxis, and motorbikes are readily available for hire. Alternatively, for those who wish to connect more deeply with the landscape, guided hiking or cycling tours offer an invigorating option. This journey, though not without its physical demands, rewards the adventurous with unforgettable vistas of the Peruvian countryside. Always remember to check local travel advisories and weather forecasts before embarking on your trip.

The Weather.

The weather in the region of Maras and Moray, similar to the rest of the Sacred Valley, is generally divided into two distinct seasons. The dry season, from May to September, offers clear, sunny days and cooler nights. This is the best time for outdoor activities, with daytime temperatures averaging between 60-70°F (15-21°C). However, it’s important to note that temperatures can drop significantly at night.
The wet season, from October to April, is characterized by frequent, heavy rains. Despite this, there are still periods of sunshine, and the landscape is particularly lush and green. If visiting during this period, be prepared for muddy conditions and pack appropriate rain gear. Remember, the altitude of the area can affect weather conditions and temperatures, so it’s always good to be prepared for a swift change in weather.

When to Go:

When planning a visit to Maras and Moray, timing is key to maximize your experience. The optimal time to explore these historical sites is during the dry season, from May to September. With minimal rainfall and temperatures averaging between 60-70°F (15-21°C) during the day, this season is ideal for outdoor activities. However, if you choose to visit during the wet season, remember to pack weather-appropriate gear and be ready for the lush, vibrant landscape that awaits you. Always remember, no matter the season, unpredictability can be a part of the adventure, so it’s essential to be prepared and flexible with your travel plans.

Important sites to visit in Maras Moray Tour:

While visiting Maras and Moray, there are certain noteworthy sites that should be on every traveler’s itinerary.

Maras Salt Mines: Known as ‘Salinas de Maras’, these pre-Incan salt pans are a sight to behold. Saltwater from a local subterranean stream is directed into pools, which are then left to evaporate, leaving behind crystallized salt. The intricate network of pools creates a stunning landscape that is a must-see.

Moray Agricultural Terraces: The terraced circular depressions at Moray are another fascinating sight. Believed to be an agricultural experiment station of the Incas, the terraces have different microclimates at each level. It is thought that the Incas used them to research the effects of different climatic conditions on crops.

Maras Town: Don’t miss the opportunity to explore the small, charming town of Maras itself. With its narrow streets, historic church, and local shops selling Maras pink salt and other regional specialties, it’s well worth a stop.

Remember, these sites carry with them centuries of history and culture, so take the time to embrace and appreciate the significance of these marvels.

The Incredible biodiversity:

The biodiversity in and around Maras and Moray is as impressive as the historical sites. The region is home to a wide variety of flora and fauna due to its unique microclimates. You might spot endearing llamas and alpacas grazing nonchalantly alongside the trails, while birdwatchers will delight in the sight of Andean condors soaring in the clear blue skies. The diverse plant life, from delicate orchids to hardy cacti, paints the landscapes in vibrant hues. As you navigate the area, remember that this biodiversity plays a vital role in sustaining the local ecosystems. Thus, it is not just a visual delight but also a significant contributor to the ecological balance in this part of the world.

Safety Considerations:

While exploring Maras and Moray’s spectacular landscapes and historical sites, safety should always be a priority. Given the region’s high altitude, it’s crucial to acclimatize to prevent altitude sickness. Stay hydrated, eat light meals, and rest when needed. Hiking boots are recommended for the rocky and uneven terrains. Moreover, while the local wildlife is generally harmless, maintain a respectful distance to avoid disturbing them. Always remember to carry sun protection, like hats and sunglasses, as the sun can be intense at these altitudes. Lastly, respect the sites and their ecosystems by following a ‘leave no trace’ policy, taking your trash with you, and refraining from picking plants or feeding wildlife.
