Essential Information
Essential Info About the 4-day Choquequirao Trek
Arriving in Cusco:
Welcome to the starting point of your thrilling adventure—the Choquequirao Trek in beautiful Cusco, Peru. As you plan your journey, note that Cusco’s airport is designed for domestic flights only. International travelers will first need to arrive in Lima to clear customs. Even if your onward flight to Cusco is on the same day with the same airline, you’ll need to collect and recheck your luggage in Lima. Though air travel remains the top choice to reach Cusco, offering various airlines, LAN Airlines usually provides the most flights, albeit at a slightly higher cost.
Be aware that Cusco’s elevated location can sometimes cause flight delays or cancellations due to weather conditions. If you’re considering other options, a scenic bus ride may be appealing, but anticipate a lengthy journey of up to 20 hours from Lima. Alternatively, traveling from nearby cities like Puno or Arequipa might offer a more comfortable, leisurely experience.
About Your Luggage:
Feel free to leave any extra items securely at your lodge in Cusco or with us before embarking on your trek. Rest easy knowing your belongings will be safely stored throughout your journey and returned to you promptly upon your return. For easy handling, please ensure each piece of luggage is clearly tagged for identification.
About the Altitude:
Cusco’s high elevation can present a unique challenge due to the potential risk of altitude sickness. The thinner air at these heights may make it harder to maintain normal oxygen levels. To fully prepare, we recommend spending at least two days acclimating in Cusco before venturing into the Andes. Be mindful of symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, reduced appetite, nausea, dizziness, or sleep disturbances, similar to those of a hangover or flu. If severe symptoms occur, please contact our team for immediate medical support.
To keep yourself in optimal condition, reduce your intake of coffee and alcohol as they may dehydrate you, and avoid smoking, which impacts oxygen absorption. Refrain from using sleeping pills as they might cause shallow breathing while you’re asleep. It’s advisable to consult with your doctor regarding altitude sickness prevention, which might include medications like acetazolamide and dexamethasone.
Weather:
Cusco’s weather is full of surprises, with even the dry period from April to October liable to sudden showers or bursts of sunshine. Be sure to pack essentials such as a waterproof jacket, pants, and poncho, and don’t forget those gloves for cooler or wet days! Prepare for a variety of temperatures by bringing layered clothing so you can adjust as the weather changes. A warm, lightweight padded jacket is perfect for keeping cozy when the sun goes down.
Porter Staff Included:
We strive to make your trekking adventure as seamless and enjoyable as possible, thanks to our amazing porters who expertly manage your gear. During your pre-trek briefing, we’ll provide you with a duffel bag for your Choquequirao Trek essentials. Make sure to keep each bag under 7 kg / 14 lbs, including your sleeping bag and air mattress for your comfort. Our porters are dedicated to enhancing your trek experience, and additional porters are available if you need assistance with extra belongings or prefer to lighten your load.
Daypack:
Your daypack will become an indispensable companion on this journey, carrying essentials like snacks, water, sunscreen, a camera, rain gear, and other must-haves. Choose one that fits comfortably with adjustable straps, as you’ll be wearing it throughout the day. Ensure it meets your needs while being light enough to carry with ease. Think of it as your trusty sidekick—keep it manageable.
Duffel Bag for the 4-day Choquequirao Trek:
We provide a compact duffel bag for your trek clothing, with a weight limit of 7 kg / 15.4 lbs. Our horsemen will transport your bag from one location to the next while other horses carry food and camping supplies. Please note, access to your items in the duffel bag is only available at the end of each day’s trek, as the horses and horsemen typically proceed ahead of the group.
Travel Insurance:
Consider travel insurance as your safeguard—a vital part of any adventure. Whether it’s a brief getaway, an essential business trip, or a dream vacation, unforeseen events can arise. With travel insurance, you’re equipped to handle delays, cancellations, medical issues, or lost luggage with confidence. We strongly recommend securing travel insurance before your adventure. It is straightforward and cost-effective, ensuring your travel investment is protected. Step into the unknown with confidence and enjoy peace of mind by choosing travel insurance today.
FAQ
Choquequirao Trek FAQs
Is the Choquequirao Trek difficult? Do I need to be in good physical condition?
It is true that the trek to Choquequirao is not easy due to the challenging geography, but you don’t need to be an athlete or expert trekker to complete it. While being fit is advantageous, allowing you to enjoy the views and appreciate the Incan ruins along the route, regular exercise prior to your journey is recommended. Consider incorporating walks, hikes, or aerobic activities into your routine in the months leading up to your trip. Overall, the hike is categorised as moderate to difficult, so preparation is key.
Are there bathrooms on the Trail to Choquequirao?
Yes, there are ample opportunities to find bathroom facilities along the trail. Initial sanitary facilities are managed by local communities and require a fee to use. Additional toilets are strategically located at lunch spots and designated camping areas. It’s advisable to carry your own toilet paper, though it can also be purchased along the way. Don’t hesitate to ask your guide for assistance.
Who will trek with me?
Typically, you will join a group of fellow hikers of diverse nationalities and ages. While it is impossible to confirm the exact composition of your group in advance due to privacy considerations, sharing this experience with others enhances camaraderie and enriches your adventure.
Do I really need a trekking guide?
Yes, recent regulations in Peru mandate that trekking guides are nearly compulsory for all trekking activities. Having a guide not only enhances your safety but also makes the trek more informative and enjoyable, as they provide insights about the region’s history and culture. For those with significant trekking experience, it may be possible to go without a guide, but having one can help navigate challenges along the trail.
What if I can’t complete the Choquequirao Trek?
Should you not be able to complete the trek due to health concerns, our guide will assist you in reaching the nearest town for transportation. We carry supplemental oxygen for respiratory issues, and in extreme situations, helicopter pickups can be arranged at your expense, provided you have the necessary travel insurance. Please note that there are no refunds if you are unable to finish the hike.
Will I be dropped off at the hotel at the end of the Trek?
Definitely! At the conclusion of your trek, hotel drop-off is included in the Choquequirao tour package. If your accommodation is in the Sacred Valley, such as Ollantaytambo or Urubamba, we can arrange to drop you off there as well, although this would incur an additional cost of $30.
Can I change the departure date once the tickets have been purchased?
Yes, changes to departure dates can be accommodated, though tickets are non-transferable and non-refundable. It is essential to notify our office as soon as possible if a date change is necessary. Please remember, deposits are not refundable in the event of a cancellation.
What is the weather like for the Choquequirao Trek?
The weather is notoriously unpredictable. We suggest dressing in layers to readily adjust to varying climate conditions as you ascend and descend along the trek.
Can I suffer from altitude sickness during the Choquequirao Trek?
To effectively manage acclimatization, it’s important to prepare both physically and mentally for the altitude changes you will encounter on the Choquequirao Trek. Engaging in a regimen of regular exercise such as walking, jogging, or even light aerobics in the weeks leading up to your journey can significantly ease your body’s adjustment to the high elevation. Spending a few days acclimating in Cusco or the Sacred Valley is also advisable, as these locations are lower in elevation compared to the Choquequirao site itself. This gradual exposure helps your body adapt, typically requiring anywhere from 24 hours to two days for most individuals to begin feeling comfortable with the elevation.
Stay well-hydrated to maintain proper oxygen levels, and consider drinking coca tea, a traditional remedy for altitude sickness. If you experience symptoms like headaches, nausea, or dizziness, supplemental oxygen can help. Our experienced guides can recognize and manage altitude sickness, ensuring your safety and comfort to fully enjoy your trek without discomfort.
How many people are there per group?
Our groups are capped at a maximum of 10 participants, with typical sizes ranging from 2 to 6 individuals. This focus on small, private groups ensures a more personalised trekking experience.
Is it important to order a saddle horse?
The first day’s hike can be quite strenuous, so we recommend budgeting between 70 to 100 soles if you wish to hire a horse to assist with the climb. This option may be beneficial if you anticipate challenges with elevation gain.

How to Arrive at Choquequirao
HOW TO ARRIVE AT CHOQUEQUIRAO?
Reaching Choquequirao, often called the sister city of Machu Picchu, is a thrilling and rewarding expedition requiring thoughtful planning. Nestled in Peru’s Andean mountains, this archaeological gem is accessed primarily through a challenging trek. Cachora, the favored starting point, lies about a four-hour drive from Cusco. From Cachora, trekkers embark on a multi-day hike covering approximately 40 kilometers (24.8 miles) both ways.
The trail features steep climbs and descents, weaving through deep valleys and lofty mountain passes, offering awe-inspiring views and a profound nature experience. Many travelers choose to hire local guides and porters for a safe and informative journey. The demanding trek to Choquequirao is a historical and natural pilgrimage, rewarding adventurers with less-visited ruins and the joy of uncovering a hidden treasure.
What is Choquequirao
CHOQUEQUIRAO: THE LAST RETREAT OF THE INCAS
Crafted by the Incas in the 15th century, Choquequirao stands as an archaeological park, nestled between the snowy Salkantay peaks in Santa Teresa, La Convencion, Cusco, Peru. Standing 3,050 meters above sea level, its architecture, including terraces and buildings, cascades from the lowest “Sunch’uPata” to the highest point, forming a platform of approximately 150 square meters. As the “sacred sister” of Machu Picchu, its partial excavation continues to draw interest as a site for exploring Incan culture. Created by Tupac Inca Yupanqui and Huayna Capac, it was among the last refuges for Manco Inca Yupanqui after a thwarted siege in 1536. Likely serving as a checkpoint to Vilcabamba and an administrative hub, its ceremonial area stretches over 700 meters, playing a key role linking the Amazon Jungle to Cusco.
LOCATION:
Situated in the Salkantay Mountain range, Choquequirao is at 3,050 meters, surrounded by the Apus “Yanama,” “Ampay,” “Chokecarpu,” “Pumasiyo,” and “Panta,” near the Apurímac River’s left bank. In historic times, it linked to Machu Picchu through elaborate trails. The area is graced with magnificent landscapes, valleys, mountains, and a wealth of flora and fauna.

- Pack Smart: Include essential items such as a high-quality backpack, water purification tablets, a first aid kit, and suitable clothing layers for varying weather conditions. Don’t forget dependable hiking boots and trekking poles for better stability.
- Hydration and Nutrition: Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the trek. Bring high-energy snacks like nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars to maintain your energy.
- Respect the Environment: Practice Leave No Trace principles to protect the area’s natural beauty. Avoid littering, remain on designated paths, and be respectful of wildlife and local communities.
