Travel Information

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

ABOUT ARRIVING IN CUSCO:

Our 8-day Choquekirao trek to Machu Picchu begins in Cusco – Peru. When arriving in Cusco, keep in mind that the airport is exclusively dedicated to domestic flights. This means that international travelers who arrive by air will need to go through customs in Lima. Even if your flight to Cusco is operated by the same airline on the same day, you will still need to retrieve your luggage in Lima and check it back in.

The most preferred mode of transportation to Cusco is by plane, with several airline options available. While LAN Airlines tends to be more expensive, they offer a wider range of flights. It’s worth noting that disruptions and cancellations can occur due to the high altitude in Cusco, which may prevent planes from landing in certain weather conditions. Alternatively, taking a bus is an option, although the journey from Lima can take up to 20 hours. It’s best to avoid this if possible and consider traveling from nearby cities such as Puno or Arequipa for a more practical option.

ABOUT BRIEFING

For your Trek briefing, it will occur one day prior to the hike. The location either at your Hotel or our offices is dependent on the confirmation email you received at 6:30 p.m. Make use of this opportunity to get answers for any issues and queries that you may have. Your Guide will also confirm that you possess the correct gear for the journey.

WHAT TO DO IN CUSCO

Upon your entrance to Cusco (3,033m / 11,154ft), it is paramount to allow the body to accustom itself to the elevated heights of the area. We encourage travelling visitors to consider shorter trips such as Cusco City Tour and Sacred Valley Tour prior to any extended journey such as Machu Picchu and Choquequirao. By doing this, you can reduce your risk of altitude sickness. Should you have already penciled in a tour like Rainbow Mountain or Humantay Lake, we suggest making them last on your list.

WEATHER IN CUSCO?

The area of Cusco has two potential seasons: the wet season from November to March and the arid season from April to October. Still, weather in the Andes is unpredictable so it’s always a good idea to bring rain protection with you, just in case you experience warmer days. At “Sunrise Peru Trek”, we guarantee an unforgettable encounter no matter what nature throws at you. It is almost impossible to be exact about the climate in Peru. During the rainy season it may be bright and pleasant while during arid periods there could be hail – still one of the charms of Peru.

FLIGHT AND HOTEL RESERVATION IN CUSCO

Cusco stands tall as an iconic city for South American tourists and arranging your holiday should not be overly difficult. Nevertheless, if you wait until the peak season has already started, you ought to secure your reservations in advance. Should any quandaries arise while making travel arrangements, please do not hesitate to contact one of our intrepid travel counselors who will be delighted to discover the best bargains and ideal accommodation locations for you.

DIFFICULTY OF TREK

Our treks require a reasonable level of physical fitness and stamina. Therefore, before your arrival to Peru we suggest that you build up your fitness by regularly exercising and getting yourself used to the altitude. We would also recommend that you arrive two days prior to your journey.

ABOUT YOUR LUGGAGE:

You can leave any surplus items at your lodge in Cusco or with us prior to the trek. Your bags will be kept safely for the duration of your trek and returned to you when you return. Ensure each bag is tagged so it can be identified easily.

ABOUT THE ALTITUDE:

Altitude, particularly in Cusco, Peru, can pose a challenge for travelers due to the risk of altitude sickness. At higher altitudes, the air contains less oxygen, making it harder for the body to obtain sufficient levels. To adapt to the environment, we highly recommend spending at least two days in Cusco before embarking on any trek in the Andes. Symptoms of altitude sickness may include headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite, vomiting, dizziness, and difficulty sleeping or breathing during exercise. These symptoms can resemble those of a hangover or flu. If experiencing severe symptoms, please contact our office immediately for assistance in obtaining medical help.

It’s crucial to avoid excessive consumption of coffee or alcohol, as they can contribute to dehydration, and smoking can hinder effective oxygen absorption. Furthermore, taking sleeping pills is not recommended, as they can result in shallow breathing during sleep, thereby compromising oxygen absorption.

If deemed necessary by your doctor, medications such as acetazolamide and dexamethasone may be prescribed to mitigate altitude sickness risks before embarking on your upward expedition.

PORTER STAFF INCLUDED:

Our camping excursions come with porters that are in charge of setting up and transporting all gear. They will also be lugging the duffel bag that you got at the briefing held prior to your 8-day Choquekirao trek to Machu Picchu. Each individual travel bag must not exceed 7 kg / 14 lbs and should contain both your sleeping bag and air mattress.

Choquekirao Info

CHOQUEKIRAO: THE LAST RETREAT OF THE INCAS

The Choquekirao Trek to Machu Picchu takes you the Inca ruins located at 3,050 masl; is in the spurs of the Salkantay Mountain Range in the Province of “La Convención” in the Cusco region above the valley of Apurímac River. The complex is 1,800 hectares, of which 30% is excavated.

The site is reached by a two-day hike from outside Cusco. Choquekirao was built by Tupac Inca Yupanqui (1471-1493) and Huayna Capac (1493-1527). It was one of the last bastions of resistance and refuge of the Sapan Inca Son of the Sun, Manco Inca Yupanqui, who fled Cusco after his siege of the city failed in 1536.

“Choquekirao was probably one of the entrance check points to Vilcabamba, and also an administrative hub serving political, social and economic functions. Its urban design has followed the symbolic patterns of the imperial capital, with ritual places dedicated to the Sun (Inti), to the Mother Earth (“Pachamama”), water and other divinities, with mansions for administrators and houses for artisans, warehouses, large dormitories or “kallankas” and farming terraces belonging to the Inca or the local people.

Spreading over 700 meters, the ceremonial area drops as much as 65 meters from the elevated areas to the main square. Choquequirao also played an important role as a link between the Amazon Jungle and the city of Cusco.
